A default set of tactics based on their personality might be pretty cool, but it must be editable. I'm all for iconic looks, not choosing your companion's wardrobe and all those things that make the companions feel like PC's of other players around a P&P rpg table. Setting up tactics is to me an abstraction of pre-planning along the lines of "when I weak an enemy with this spell, I'm sure you could take advantage of that", "hey I've got this trick that puts them off guard every time. Look for it, then help me take that bugger down" or "remember, I'm not stingy with health poultices. I'd prefer you not drop, dear."
That kind of defeats the object of the exercise. It's one of those all or nothing things. Dragons Dogmas AI learns as does Final Fantasy XIII/XIII-2. If for example you use a libra the AI will inflict max possible damage with the skills it has. If on the other hand you don't have one, the AI will cycle attacks until it finds the best one.
Dragons Dogma actually lets you send your "pawns" to other worlds for training. Not too sure of the mechanics of that one yet, but . And the AI will learn new tactics during combat, depending on what happens.
Totally different approach to DA where you are commanding the troops as pieces and not personalities.
