Fact: Dwarf Noble is the best origin.

I played as a Dalish Elf, mostly because it was and is one of the few origin-stories where I get to stand up the Duncan recruiting me into the army to do something I really don't want to do. However, in the end, it all made sense. And certain quests made even more sense by playing a Dalish elf...

As for the OP I'd add to the dwarf commoner recommendations (though I'd recommend that anyway). It's probably the closest to the city elf origin in being non-human, from the downtrodden side of society, and then feeling exceptional at how things turn around in your character's life as you go along. Plus Duster girls are the best looking with dual wielded daggers- just fantastic to watch... Not really a mage dwarf option, but Duster rogue girls... not a sight to miss...

Though if you're looking to wield magic and not just be a typical human, you could play an elf mage... makes a small amount of difference being elven at the Mage Tower, but it does make a discursive difference when talking with Jowan later (though it doesn't affect the outcome of Jowan's plight any differently)... Or you could find the mod "Dalish Mage Origin" to play a Dalish elf that starts as a mage. I haven't tried that one myself yet, but you could then have the experience of being from a Dalish clan as well as being a mage...

City elf (male) is my favorite as well :) Magi and dwarven noble are great possible origins to consider too, IMO.
