Haste is far from essential. But it definately seems nice to have.

I consider haste the best spell in the game. The run speed alone makes haste worth using, and since my main is a two handed warrior it is freaking awesome in battle. Im playing on nightmare with minimal pausing trying to use only support magic such as healing, stamina replenishment, and buffs. In that type of group, haste is insane.

Is Haste essential? No.

Is Haste useful? Yes. Depending on group makeup. The more warriors in a group, the more useful it is. The more mages, less useful.

It's also useful just for running through areas.

No.

Only essential spell is Heal.

Haste is only good if you're the only party mage and skilled for buffing/healer. Even then I dont think its that uber.

Everything else depends upon what you like to play. Of course, theres options which make the game much easier, but Haste is certainly not one of those.

I wouldn't say Haste is essential. My main character is a Duelist/Assassin and I'm normally accompanied by Shale, Sten and Morrrigan (who doesn't have Haste btw), but on the occasions where I've took Wynne along, having Wynne activate Haste makes battles easier, tipping the balance in your favour for close battles so I do tend to keep Haste active all the time while Wynne is in the party. It's annoying that for no apparent reason, a map transition will sometimes deactivate it (along with Shale's Pulverising Blows. The same seems to happen with other constant Talents or Spells with other characters).

Go Wynne Arcane with haste, PC Arcane/Bloodmage with haste, Zevran Bard/Assassin with Song of Courage and high cunning, and Sten/Oghren as a 2h warrior.

My current main attack group is Morrigan, Zevran, Lelianna and myself (rogue). Haste would really muck up the momentum.

I'd say classes of spells can be essential, depending on what else you have, or more importantly, what else you don't have. The closest thing I'd get to calling something essential is having some sort of large area effect spell to deal with archers at high levels OR good healing.

I put it in the "Very Useful" category. Not absolutely essential (like say "Group Heal), but it does make hard fights into manageable and moderate fights into cakewalks.

I dont consider it essential, but it definitly increases the DPS. I play a rogue so its great with stealth, especially if you have the passive blood ability for rogues from the dlc wardens keep. and if u decide to use swift salves with it, the effect of haste and swift salves are stackable, in junction with the power of blood rogue ability, you could out run the roadrunner and bring wile coyote some justice!

Well, melee is by far the single best sustained single target DPS. LOL, go compare what an extra fireball does DPS vs a Hasted 2 Hander. Haste is worth an 1000+ dmg a fight. So duh!

But for you math folks lets see: 1 Extra attack every eight to ten seconds PER character @ 80 points. Best spell points your mage ever spent! Unless you are rolling three mages.

I'm confused though... myself as rogue has momentum and Wynne has haste. Right now I'm using Wynne, Leliana, Shale and myself. Does using momentum actually cancel out the haste buff that is on me? If so that sucks and I'll have to use a respec mod since the whole reason I got haste was to stack with momentum.

I consider Haste essential for 2h warriors. Otherwise no.

I wouldn't say it was essential as that would imply the game could not be completed without it. I can't say I use it that much as I'm too busy doing other things in the game.

I have only used it in one campaign; have played more than a score of 'em at this point. So I guess not....

Only time I ever used it was when I went to the circle tower late in the game. Iirc,Wynne only needed to take one more spell at that point (totally geared for support/healer/buffs) so I took it. When I found it didn't work with Momentum, she was back to roasting marshmallows and spouting moral platitudes at...dog.

I don't like to use it because it looks ridiculous and the fact that it doesn't work with momentum doesn't help either.

Haste+Momentum actually makes you hit very slow, possibly the slowest you can hit since it somehow bugs the animation.

but if you are a warrior you can use precise striking.

You will get +10 ti attack and crit and haste+momentum will now work and you will hit faster than the flash himself!
