How did Anders' fans convince Bioware to use him as a companion?

Cullen is really cute. He looks a lot better than he looked in DAO.
I for one would love to have a templar companion. Alistair was one, we didn't have one in DA2 so if there's going to be a come back I want to have him. Even if it's just hearing him say how he thinks about the situation in Thedas.

So I think anders was brought back partly because of fan demand right? So speaking hypothetically if a certain group of people possibly wanted a companion to come back how would they help persuade Bioware to use them? I imagine there's no secret ritual or something lol. So do they just comment on the forums or what? Just out of curiosity

Actually, Sebastian was originally supposed to be Nathaniel, but I forgot what happened about that.Mishelle1 wrote...
Unfortunatly fan demand (or secret rituals) doesn't seem to work, otherwise we would have had Nate Howe as a companion in DA2.. or Teagan.

I don't recall any significant movement to bring Anders into DA2. Seems it was strictly BioWare's discretion there. As they put it, they used familiar faces mainly because it fit, and for a sense of continuity between the games.
I do not want to say this but I guess you are right here.
BW tends to take the story as it comes along and Anders came along...........................................
But then again I wouldn't want to miss Anders in DA2. Only wanted to talk to him/hear from him from the start of act 3 untill the final battle. Not just the same lines he says when he's adressed to outside his personel quest.

At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure Bioware kinda just does what they want and relies on their excellent storytelling to make us love it. Seems like they already have the DAIII storyline pretty well mapped out in their minds.

All situations require a brave, fair, hunky Knight Captain... I've heard it's the new law in Thedas, particularly Orlais!
... But seriously though, If they're gonna run with the whole Mage/Templar thing then he'd be perfect for DA3, and if not then he'd still be perfect for DA3 cos he's pretty!

Bioware thought that they did enough hand waving (Leliana, Anders, etc.)...thus Nathaniel wasn't a companion. I would have taken him over Anders in a second. Perhaps Nate as a companion in DA3?HiroVoid wrote...

Cullen would be an interesting love interest...for a mage pc.
Perhaps if we all slit our wrists and dance naked outside of Bioware's main office, they'll be creeped out enough to get the message?

The banter between Anders and Justice were a sign of Anders's role in DA2.
This is all speculation, and maybe Bioware already addressed this and said that it's not what happened. I havent' followed the DA forums a lot after DA2 release, so I don't know if this was already been discussed.

Apparently it's unlikely we will get Nathaniel in DA3 because he can be killed of twice, which is a shame. I really think Bioware will have wasted adding a potentially amazing dynamic to the game if they don't make Cullen a companion/LI (not just because I'm bias,) but because even if I thought Cullen was a complete jerk, his story is still a compelling one and his character could be developed and tied into the main plot easily and poignantly.
There seems to be a trend in the Dragon Age games in which they always have at least one romance option that is heavily involved in the main plot (in DA:O it was Alistair and Morrigan and in DA2 it was Anders and Isabela with her book of Qun.) So why not have Cullen as one of the main story driven love interests? If they're gonna run with the Templar/Mage rebellion (which will at least be addressed as a side story) then he'd be the perfect candidate. Plus, for anyone that hates him they'd get to be really rude to him and eventually kill him off. It's a win-win situation!

This is only a theory, but if Bioware started to plan something about DA2 after the release (even without working directly on the game), they could've decided to put Anders in the game even before Awakening came out. During the party banter between Justice and Anders, Justice said many times that Anders should be more active in helping his fellow mages in achieving freedom. Anders expressed his dislike (or hate) for the Chantry during Awakening. Everything was already here.

You make a good point there.
As far as I'm aware they never said anything to quash your theory. If that's the case then there's a high possibility that Cullen could already be in the works as a companion/LI in DA3, for the simple fact that they gave his character a much bigger and important role (compared to his brief appearance in DA:O,) they completely retconned his epilogues in DA:O risking fan backlash, they prettied him up making him easily one of the best looking characters in DA2 and really developed his character beyond that of a Mage hating Templar who was once in love with the Hero of Ferelden (if she was a Mage)... Not to mention they heavily tied him into the Mage/Templar conflict which is bound to rear it's head in DA3. Why bother going to all that trouble if he's not going to be used in some capacity in the next game? There was plenty of hints and foreshadowing.
Since Bioware seemed to always have at least one romanceable option that's tied into the main storyline, it would certainly indicate that Cullen could be the one to take that title in DA3. DA2 was the filler/interlude/story set up for DA3, so perhaps it also set the ground work for Cullen's influence in the new game too?

It could be.. The difference between Anders and Cullen is that Ander was present in Awakening, in which development Bioware was working on DA2 too, while Cullen was present in DA2, in which development Bioware wasn't working on The Next Thing.
Still, I think we'll get a Templar/Seeker companion. Cullen might be the one in the party, since he's alive no matter what happened in DA2, and he's popular.

True, although Cullen was also in DA:O and Bioware knew that he had quite a loyal fan base even then, despite being a very minor NPC only showing up in the Mage origins (particularly so if you were a female Mage cos he was in love with your Warden) and then again in the broken circle quest when he got tortured. Maybe it was just fan service that he was put into DA2 with a bigger role, or maybe they were testing the waters to see how people reacted to him with the intention of having him as a companion/LI in DA3 if he was well received?
... Then again maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part LOL.

Bastard....
Actually, I think this is yet another reason why he'd make an *interesting* companion. He has a complex personality and history that ties into a lot of previous events with a lot of room for options. Where else are you going to find a character that is:
A. Already known to the players of the previous games
B. Had a crush on FemaleMageWarden
C. Was tortured by blood mages, then Rescued, possibly by MageWarden
D. Met and interacted with Hawke during all the craziness in Kirkwall
E. Watched Meredith gradually go bat**** insane
If you are one of the people who has an interest in the whole mage/templar conflict, Cullen would be a wonderful person to sit down with over a beer and seriously debate the merits of various points of view, 'cause he has personal experience with just about every damn crazy thing that can happen. He's also someone who could be seriously conflicted over the issue without the source of that conflict being an *informed* trait.
Interesting idea, but I have a little trouble imagining a debate when your dialog options are diplomatic, snarky, aggressive... Maybe the investigate would be used a lot in this case? That might work.

That's called blood magic, sir, and YES - we should do it!
By their own admission, Bioware can't resist the mind-dominating properties of this plan. Unless they have the Litany of Adralla....
