How did Anders' fans convince Bioware to use him as a companion?

... and I think someone (maybe OP?) should make an extra topic for discussing the mage/templar matters to come. I'm having a hard time not straying back to that topic!

ooh that's a hard question! Though I have a really hard time imagining him actually being willing to become possessed, I think he'd rather die or become crazy
Bah, he'd be too away with the fairies by that point to even realise!

Problem with making those kinda of threads is that it always turns into a pro-mage/anti-mage/pro-templar/anti-templar **** fest lol.

And I agree, ^ LolaLei - Bioware loves giving us troubled, falling-apart romances. So be it -- give me a lyrium withdrawn Cullen who questions his faith in the Chantry leadership!
He could have left already the Chantry, from what we know. The majority of the Templars left it. In this case he'd already questioned hisfaith in the Chantry's leadership (though I think not for the reason you wanted).
It'll be interesting to see how they'll bring him back and in what capacity. If he does become a companion/LI what would drive him to join up with a bunch of random misfits?
This got me to thinking and I'd like to propose a hypothetical question.
Let's say Cullen was added as a companion, but his mind is starting to become addled because years of lyrium use catching up with him. He even starts mistaking you, his love interest, for Mage Amell or Surana. Your fellow mage companion presents a possible, but radical, solution, possess Cullen with a entity of the Fade with the hopes it restores his mind. The mage then reveals the only entity willing to go possess an addled templar is a desire demon. Do you...
1.) Refuse the suggestion. Cullen slowing continues to lose memories. His still has a strong sword arm and retains his templar skills. He loves you but can't remember why.
2.) Convince Cullen to become possessed. The posession is largely successful, Cullen wins the battle of wills and mind is mostly restored. Gameplay wise he switches specialization to Spirit Warrior. Now for the cost, while he still loves you, he loses a lot of impulse control to the desire demon and a monoganous relationship on his end is impossible.
Um, is a desire-demon posessed Cullen better in bed than a normal Cullen? Just asking hypothetically for RP sake.

... so thanks for the permission, Jasmine.
Desire demon Cullen.... I have mixed feelings about that. Do I like the idea of a Cullen without inhibitions? Yes. Do I want Cullen controlled or replaced? No.
I'll settle for blushing awkward Cullen that in the end can't resist my charms.

Quick post before I go, this something I had thought about this for my original post. Cullen can now have two or more partners (think Islabella and the pearl in DAO). Possession is also the only make him interested in men. He is now more likely to initiate romantic advances, refusal will result in disapproval.

I loved him on my female Mage Warden - how he clearly wanted to hook up with her but tortured himself for it. So I would love to relive that with my DA3 mage, if he was a party member. Specially since he's better looking now.
Yea...I'm gonna go watch Cullen videos on youtube now...

Cullen can take two lovers who are both men? Well, count me in as the stuffing between that sandwich!

.. well that might be partly true
I just like to think of myself as a very passionate Dragon Age fan
I didn't mean for this to turn into a fan thread for Cullen but can't deny the inevitable
Oh and thankyou for the answers about Anders! I'd always heard he came back partly because the fans wanted him and Bioware thought it would be interesting, but I wasn't on the forums then so I didn't know
