Bioware has gone on record saying that they wanted a bittersweet ending to their epic trilogy. That is understandable, and honestly the best way to end the series, but they didnt execute it well. In my opinion the Greatest Bittersweet ending there ever was is the end of the Legacy of Kain series.

That last line summed up all of the pain and sorrow mixed with the appropriate amount of promise for a future.

"Most ironic of all was the last gift that Raziel had given me. More powerful than the sword that now held his soul, more acute even than the vision his sacrifice had accorded me. The First, Bitter Taste of that terrible illusion--Hope."

Anyone else agree? or can think of a better example?

I quite enjoyed the ending to Final Fantasy X. It made me shed a few manly tears.

Damn you just beat me too it. I love how the new game + can make canonical sense

Also like to throw out RDR an amazing story.

Not a game, but the way this series was designed it deserved a flushed out ending like Return of the King (movie).

THAT is perfection of bittersweet. World is saved, all survived (mainly, with some losses : Boromir, Theoden etc.) but Frodo and Gandalf have to leave, leaving Middle Earth for a renewed world.

In ME woulda been fine with Shepard dying so long as we could see the galaxy move on.

Never finished Bastion, will definitely do that now though ^^.

And I would agree with Mr. Epler about FF X except that it has that secret ending where he lives and everything is happy... kinda ruins the whole feel of the end. One of my issues with the end of ME was the extra scene where shepard lives. I was ok with him dying, I was ok with him living, but I felt that making the ending as sad and depressing as it was and then placing that scene with him alive just ruined it.

Me too...though, despite my distaste for the sequel in general, it was nice that they made a happy and closure-filled ending...'cept Auron didn't come back...*sigh* can't win em all.

Tears?  Not here, but I did like the ending to that one, too.

FFX was good, true. I would have to put forward Breath of Fire 2. It's old (and I later learned that if you did it right the ending could be happy) but it ended with the main character (Potentially) sacrificing himself to keep a demon buried. It was really good I thought.

And, of course, if you weren't moved by the ending to MGS3 then MAYBE YOU SHOULD GO BACK TO SKYNET, ROBOT.

Personally, if we are getting into FF, my favorite Final Fantasy has to be IX. Zidane's story is wonderful and the ultimate realization of Kuja as a very tragic figure is heartbreaking to be honest.

Suuuuuuuch a good game.  Themes of learning from the past and...well I can't really go into it without laying down some massive Spoilers.

Hey people!  Play Bastion whilst we wait to see if this Extended cut stuff works out!

Can't think of one for a game. For a story, I think my favorite bittersweet ending is Dark Tower VII.

Halo: Reach takes the cake for my favorite bittersweet ending. Though I suppose if you never played Halo, you wouldn't understand why. Then again, I don;t remember Bungie or Microsoft pushing Reach as a great point for newcomers to enter the series. Not sure why ME3 should have been the time to pick up new players.

Planescape: Torment, if you did everything, had the best ending I've ever experienced in a game, bittersweet or otherwise.

I'm not gonna say it's the best, but it's the most recent for me...Red dead's ending was an enjoyable, bittersweet ending

Dead Rising 2 (Canon Ending) Ending A.
That is all. That kind of ending I could see in Mass Effect. I didn't cry though.

EDIT; Next up I'd have to say Bastion. Chills, bro.

Ooof. Man, there have been a lot of good bittersweet endings to games lately.

I kind of miss happy ones, actually. My life isn't all cupcakes and roses, and sometimes I like a little victory in my escapism.

Yes, yes, YES.

That is how you do a bittersweet, Brave New World ending.

Would you believe that Mass Effect is the only thing I have ever let myself become emotionally invested in (entertainment wise)... Totally burnt myself and it will never happen again.

Good bittersweet endings? I'll name a few that come to mind.

- Gladiator
- V for Vendetta
- The Last Samurai
- Forrest Gump
- The Gaudian
- A Bronx Tale

Just to name a few.

As i risk scorn of my peers and fellow game junkies .... Fable 2's ending was well done (even if it was A or B or C) just a well done way of Blue, Red or Green.

Kia kaha.
