Who here ever played the Legend of Legaia Series? PSone and PS2.
I loved those games, still play them from time to time. They really took jrpg turn based combat and made it fun in my mind.

The thought the DAO sacrifice ending was good example of a successful bittersweet ending.

Depending on whether you think that Flicky was E-102 Gamma, or merely Gamma's power source, the ending of Gamma's story in Sonic Adventure was either bittersweet, or downright soul crushing.

I think out of all the bittersweet endings in video games that I've personally experienced, some of the best would include Bioshock and Kingdom Hearts 1 as well as Birth By Sleep. I would say Heavy Rain, but the endings vary so much that there can basically be no bitter ending depending on your actions. Bioshock, when you get to the end game...yeah. Was kind of sad regardless of the different endings.

As i risk scorn of my peers and fellow game junkies .... Fable 2's ending was well done (even if it was A or B or C) just a well done way of Blue, Red or Green.

Kia kaha.

Fable and well done do not belong in the same sentence.

Bioshock's ending was perhaps the first game I played where the main character could die in the end and I honestly felt happy for him (the happy ending). It just seemed so right to me even though it was very sad

Can't think of a video game example, but for a great end to a sci-fi series, look no further than Star Trek: Deep Space Nine:

WARNING! Here be spoilers for the entire series - if you plan on watching it unspoiled, skip the rest of this post...

- The Dominion War ends, but with significant casualties on both sides.

- Out of the main cast, Damar, Dukat, Weyoun, and many other core characters are dead.

- Ziyal, Jadzia Dax, Gowron and several others have already died in the build-up to the final arc.

- Odo and Sisko are 'as good as dead' - Odo says goodbye to Kira, then rejoins the Great Link, while Sisko 'dies' defeating Dukat, only to be elevated, god-like, to the Prophets in the Celestial Temple (aka the Wormhole). His last message is that he 'will return', though it'll clearly never happen on-screen, since this is the series finale.

- Worf leaves the station to become Federation Ambassador to the Klingon homeworld. O'Brien and Keiko also leave to take up teaching careers on Earth. Rom and Leeta leave due to Rom's taking over the role of Ferengi Grand Nagus.

There's hope, however:

- The Federation/Klingon/Romulan/(and, late in the game, Cardassian) Alliance wins, and peace is restored, allowing the galaxy to rebuild after all that everyone has lost.

- Colonel Kira is now Station Commander, Nog has been promoted, and Quark's bar is back to business as usual (read into that what you will...)

- Bashir and Ezri finally hook up...

- Even those who lose friends close to them get some kind of closure.

- So do we, the viewers - there's a beautiful montage showing everyone's 'best moments', and showing what they're doing, and where they'll be going. The show ends with life returning to as 'normal' as possible, with Kira and Jake looking out onto space, knowing that Sisko is 'out there, somewhere'.

It's brilliantly done, and doesn't ignore the fact that in wars, people die. Not everyone gets a happy ending. But some do, and we get to see it ALL play out. As I said before, seeing the logical conclusion to everyone's various character arcs isn't just payoff for them, but also for us, the viewers. That's what it does so well, and THAT's a crucial part of what's missing from ME3's ending.

That, plus plot logic, build-up, good narrative structure, etc. ...

I kinda liked the ending of Altair's storyline in Assassin's Creed Revelations.

spoiler spoiler spoiler

We learn that Altair has grown old, and has a family who cares for him. But, to protect the world from the apple of eden, he had to seal himself inside a vault, dying completely alone.

Very bittersweet, very well executed^_^

You could say the same about Embers. But yes, Ubi does have a talent for story telling, that's for sure.

Halo: Reach takes the cake for my favorite bittersweet ending. Though I suppose if you never played Halo, you wouldn't understand why. Then again, I don;t remember Bungie or Microsoft pushing Reach as a great point for newcomers to enter the series. Not sure why ME3 should have been the time to pick up new players.

This is the only Halo game I have played and being a big time RPG nerd I thought I had done something wrong to get that ending.  However that game did have one part that still remains some of the most fun in a game I have had and that is the space battle and being the pilot of the ship.

Planescape: Torment, if you did everything, had the best ending I've ever experienced in a game, bittersweet or otherwise.

Totally agree.  This is my all time favorite game.

Really good list here. I thought of Planescape Torment too.
I know very few people played this, but Vagrant Story remains one of my top games ever. It had a great bittersweet ending. Too bad it will never ever continue.

Oh and

Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal

I am fine with a bitter-sweet ending also. The problem I have with endings is when the main character dies. You can have a bitter-sweet ending without the main character dying. I hate it when movies and games make the main character die, no exceptions. FF X, hate the ending. Red Dead Redemption, hate the ending and to make it worse they make you play as your son 15 years later (or so). Couldn't even bring myself to finish that game after that. Just sick and tired of all the whiny hipsters saying a rainbows and unicorns ending is cliche, because the truth is, in today's day and age, it's the hero's death/ doom and gloom ending that is truly cliche.

That being said, in some cases I will still play the game or watch a movie that has that kind of ending if I like the game or movie enough. For example, I can watch Braveheart over and over, but I was still very upset when they made William Wallace die at the end. I was so hoping his friends in the audience watching his torture were going to save him before it was too late, but no...still like the movie however.

This is not the case with ME3 though. Can't bring myself to watch that awful ending again. Played the game up to the Cerberus Base mission more than once but just can't bring myself to go any farther in the game. I will try again when the EC DLC for the ending comes out. Will see how I feel afterwards.

Yup!

Halo 3, likewise - indeed, if Mass Effect 3's end had played out a little more like Halo 3's, so much the better.

Would you believe that Mass Effect is the only thing I have ever let myself become emotionally invested in (entertainment wise)... Totally burnt myself and it will never happen again.

This.  Other endings to video games have given me a bittersweet feeling, but Mass Effect was the first that made me feel strangely attached to the characters.  Hell, as pathetic as it sounds, I started to tear up when Liara came into my cabin with her project or the goodbyes on Earth.  It made me aware of how "mortal" those fictional characters actually were and how I was pathetically attached to them.  Its just too bad it ended the way it did.  For some reason, it just made me feel empty

Bioshock is the happiest bittersweet ending I've ever seen. It manages to put a huge smile on your face and tears in your eyes at the same time.

Also, LoZ: Twilight Princess has a good one.

Halo Reach had a pretty good bitter sweet ending. Your last moments of the game as the player is fighting waves of Covenant before being overwhelmed. Story for the game is poor but the ending is awesome. DA:O had a great bittersweet ending as an option. I really liked the sacrifice ending.

The idea that a character(s) has to "die" to have bittersweet ending is an old trope. There are many ways to have a bittersweet ending without any character(s) having to die. which would be original compare to what a majority of gaming companies are doing, including Bioware/EA.
