Back in 1991 one of my favorite games on the Amiga was Another World (also known as Out of This World in North America). I think that Eric Chahi captured the bittersweet part of the ending much much better. It's simple yet sad.

My personal favorite is Dragon Age Origins, sacrifice ending.

Because it was my choice, because I can chicken out but I didnt. Because Alistair gave such an awesome speech during *MY* funeral.

If BioWare wants to see their bittersweet ending done right, they should watch Gunbuster by Studio Gainax. It's basically the same story as ME3 to a degree (only they leave the aliens scary and unknowable); it even has the big-ass space bomb...only they used it all the right way.

I had read the book before playing Halo Reach. Needless to say I knew that story wasn't going to end well.

...MGS2 and 4 are flippy ninjas doing sentai poses or grunts with the voice of a 15 year old poindexter, you ought to stop.

Fixed, MGS3 was devoid of cyborg ninjas. Had lightning russians though.....

MGS3. Ohh, yes. The Boss. If ever there was any action I did not want to take in any game ever, it was pulling the trigger in that field. Afterwards, just made it more tragic.

Red Dead Redemption. I think the actual ending is more of an anti-climax, but it did bring closure to Jack. *sniff* Yep, burly, pythonesque man tears for John Marston.

Prince of Persia (Sands of Time, Warrior Within and Two Thrones) Trilogy. The ending of all that was really great. I see that game as great love story adventure. I think it is my all time favourite ending. Felt really good to go through all those three games.
Also Deus Ex (the first one) is my all time favourite game and I loved the ending they had. Too bad seems ME3 tried the same approach but really misunderstood the way it should have be by making too much space magic and involving charcters we never meet in the game until the last 10 minutes.
Vampire The Masquerade: Redemption - great 3 versions of endings you can have depending of your humanity level.

As i risk scorn of my peers and fellow game junkies .... Fable 2's ending was well done (even if it was A or B or C) just a well done way of Blue, Red or Green.

Kia kaha.

I do think Fables 2's A B C options were better simply because of who delivered them..

Just imagine if it had been that crazy... lor, Baron... whatever... the guy that shoots you before you come back to life and... I must admit I've forgotten a lot of the Fable 2 story by now..

But having that weird witchgypsy woman give you the options feelt a lot better, after all she did raise and take care of your character while he/she was growing up, even if it's possible she did it just to gain the power of the spire for herself.. But somehow it was easier to accept.

Beign given options by the reaper emperor/catalyst the king/emperor/dictator/leashholder of the reapers, just feelt weird, and where were the conversation options. When given an offer in that manner one would certainly want to check the horses teeth before buying it... Seriously, the worst villain in the history of the galaxy.

I still wodner if the catalyst was lying about geing part of the citadel, it could have been projected from anywhere in the universe. The options given could just be the start of another matrix of pain and experimentation.. I really wanted to have a word with the catalyst about all that, if my shepard can survive the whole room blowign up then that shepard can survive to as kjust a few questions to sort thigns out a little. The catalyst even admits the solution is now flawed and a new one is needed, yet it doesn't stop the reaper attacks... And Shepard never tries to ask it stop the attacks.

Catalyst: I control the reapers.

Shepard: then make them stop, it's killing us Image IPB

Image IPB

Catalyst: The current solution is no longer working, we need a new solution.

Shepard: then make them stop killing people if it isn't a solution!!

Catalyst: We will stop, once you have picked your poison. What will it be?

The Pain. That's all I need to say. (but don't get me wrong, MGS3 is one of my all time favorites, just can't dig the enemy voices. MGS2's Russkies sounded like actual hardasses)

Ultima IX, whatever issues one might have with it, had a pretty bittersweet ending - sacrifice yourself to save the world because it turns out that it's the manifestation of all your negative traits that's causing problems here.

The Avatar is female. Therefore Ultima 9 could not be canon.

Ultima VIII, for that matter, had a pretty bleak ending. 'So everything you've been fighting for in Britannia? Yeah, to get home, you're going to have to completely abandon your values. Have fun.'

And what's more, nobody's going to care. Super Avatar Bros. indeed.

Ultima ended with Ultima 7.

I thought Red Dead Redemptions ending was quite bittersweet.

*SPOILERS FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVEN'T PLAYED THE GAME YET*

On the one hand, Marston dies a redeemed man, having successfully gotten away from his life as a criminal. In doing so he also manages to ensure that his family escapes and can continue living without the fear of being kidnapped.

On the other hand, he needed to die for this to happen. The death of a main character that is likeable sucks of course, but it is easy to see why it needed to happen. But his death also caused his son, Jack, to become everything he didn't want for him to become. In other words, he becomes a coldhearted killer that spends his life roaming the west.

Sorry for the long post.

Didnt think about the ending but yes that fits.  Also I was thinking of using the Supernova tactic to stop the reapers, it's overkill but it would work.

While it may not be popular, I found the ending to CoD4 to be rather good, back when it seemed like everyone but me bit it. I never played MW2 or MW3, but I understand they brought Price back, which seemed a shame.

Normally I'd be in the same boat as you, but the Price reveal was awesome in MW2. For me it was completely unexpected because I was 100% sure he was dead. The way the mission played up to it, the reveal, and the follow-up was all expert craftsmanship on the part of Infinity Ward.

I have to agree with the above poster. Rockstar knows what they're doing in writing a tragic hero. John Marston fit the role perfectly and his death was properly forshadowed. BioWare could learn a lot since they took a classic hero who is supposed to succeed and tried to cram in the 'tragic' in the last five minutes. If they really wanted bittersweet the tragedy would have fit better having happened around Shep instead of to Shep. But I digress....

Other great bittersweet endings are

Heavenly Sword, sad only one other has mentioned this as the ending is incredible.

MGS3 and 4. Really BioWare could learn a lot from MGS4. The end has plenty of tragedy and hope for the future. The ending sequencing is almost absurd in length but there were a lot of loose ends to tie up and we see how well 'speculation for everyone' works out. When you write a complicated story you need a long ending, hope BioWare has figured that out.

I'm gonna go ahead and point to the hero ending of inFAMOUS 2. I haven't played as a villain, so Idunno how that ending goes.

Planescape: Torment (although I consider the ending, where The Nameless One resurrects his companions a "sweet" one)

I also think one of my all-favorites, Beyond Good & Evil, qualifies for a good bittersweet ending.

Dragon Age: Origins pulls a good bittersweet too, with Warden's sacrificing himself. But as I was able to both save my life AND have sex, I didn't see any advantages of the former option.

Have you seen this review of Ultima VIII before, Mr. Epler?  Pretty funny stuff.
