Bioware has gone on record saying that they wanted a bittersweet ending to their epic trilogy. That is understandable, and honestly the best way to end the series, but they didnt execute it well. In my opinion the Greatest Bittersweet ending there ever was is the end of the Legacy of Kain series.

That last line summed up all of the pain and sorrow mixed with the appropriate amount of promise for a future.

"Most ironic of all was the last gift that Raziel had given me. More powerful than the sword that now held his soul, more acute even than the vision his sacrifice had accorded me. The First, Bitter Taste of that terrible illusion--Hope."

Anyone else agree? or can think of a better example?

And, of course, if you weren't moved by the ending to MGS3 then MAYBE YOU SHOULD GO BACK TO SKYNET, ROBOT.

This definitely.

Plus Halo Reach

Metal Gear Solid 2 had a great ending. I'm probably the only one in the world who thinks that.

Only one I've ever seen for sure

- Red Dead Redemption
- Indigo Prophecy, depending on which ending you wound up with, but if memory serves me correctly, all were bittersweet
- Metal Gear Solid 3
- Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
- Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War
- Robotech: Battlecry

Those are just a few that I can think of right now.

Interestingly enough, Mass Effect 2's non-canon ending is incredibly moving. I remember having to make 3 attempts to get this ending before I gave in and read a guide on how to get Shepard to die.

Shepard: "Joker... tell them."
Joker: "You tell them. You're not doing this to me again!"
Shepard: "You've got to warn them. More are coming... Joker -- go."

I'm gonna go with MGS3, MGS4. Persona 3 FES, and Final Fantasy 7 Crisis core (even though you knew what was coming, damn if it did not get you every time)

The Pain. That's all I need to say. (but don't get me wrong, MGS3 is one of my all time favorites, just can't dig the enemy voices. MGS2's Russkies sounded like actual hardasses)

Ah...yeah....still less pretentious than cybor ninjas (no matter how AWESOME Raiden became, hes still pretentious).

BUT to make up for it, The Pain.

Best. Boss Fight. Ever.

MGS3
and 4. Really BioWare could learn a lot from MGS4. The end has plenty
of tragedy and hope for the future. The ending sequencing is almost
absurd in length but there were a lot of loose ends to tie up and we see
how well 'speculation for everyone' works out. When you write a
complicated story you need a long ending, hope BioWare has figured that
out.

MGS4....bittersweet only if you had major emotional attachment to Big Boss (like i did, MGS3 was first MGS game), otherwise i don't think its that bittersweet

The ending of Shadow Of The Colossus is definitely one of ma favorite bittersweet endings.

No doubt about it.

So much this ^.  Watching your character slay tragic creatures and consume their souls on the orders of a dark, distant god, knowing with each final blow your own soul become further twisted and defiled, ultimately ending in your demise.

All for the rebirth of your love.

Quite bittersweet, indeed.

WTF nobody named Metal Gear Solid 4? It was really the only video game in history where I actually shed some tears.

A great ending no doubt but is it really bittersweet?  Seemed to me everyone but Liquid had a happy ending and I would argue Liquid did get what he wanted and got his final battle with Snake.  He lost with a smile if I recall.  Maybe Zero didn't get his happy ending but it didn't look like he was even aware of his surroundings.

It's a bitter sweet ending, Solid snake is gonna die 3-6 months due to his rapid aging and he managed to kill his surrogate mother due to his foxdie and he kills Big Boss for a third time due to it and he was used by the patriot system his whole life. But he gets to live out his last days in peace and free of the system. and Big Boss dies but he dies realizing his mistakes and finally understands what The Boss died for.
And that was not Liquid...... it was Ocalot.... he used hypno-therapy and nano meachines to trick him-self and the patriot system into believing he was liquid. and everything he did was to try and bring back Big Boss and realize the dream Big Boss was trying to accomplish at Outer Heaven. thats why he was smiling, he managed to bring Big Boss back and accomplish what Big Boss was trying to do at Outer Heaven, which was destroy the system and end the War Economy that Big Boss helped create.

I could never be moved by the metal gear solid series, mostly because the writing was so balls-to-the-wall horrible I was laughing any time some main character opened their mouths to reiterate a point I got five hours ago.

FFX was a great ending, a true ending that was never expanded and anyone who says otherwise is wrong and needs to be shown a few brain washing... er... I mean... educational videos. Very good job on the bitter/sweet balance, especially after the 100+ hours I invested in the playthrough making my characters overpowered beyond all reality. take THAT earth eater. really sucked when I had to fight my bahamut that always hit for 100k though

for reference: above post is why getting moved my MGS is ridiculous for me.  Its story rivals many a conspiracy theorist's manifesto with the random tangential crap, and yet fails to entice me the way Deus Ex did

I think, that in most recent games, L.A. Noire did a good job with it's ending.

I'll second all the others who said Halo: Reach is a bittersweet ending done right. But I'd also like to add Halo Wars to the list. The crew of the Spirit of Fire save humanity, but are MIA decades before the other games take place.

The MGS series is not that complicated it just becomes a cluster**** of info after MGS1. Heck I only played every MGS game once, But I liked it. heck it's one of my favorite game stories of all time. And all those characters/questions got closure in the last part of the series at-least..... Unlike ME3   BTW, I just explained the most complex parts of MGS4 its actually quite a simple plot really. Stop main antagonist from taking over world... not that complex.

Final Fantasy VI, is in my humble opinion the best video-game story I have witnessed. To think that a game from the 90's would deal with such things as hopelessness, nihilism, teenage-pregnancies and suicide.

Oh, and the greatest villain ever, and the best plot-twist midgame I have ever seen.

Hell yes. Just when you think the game is going to end... it turns out you were only halfway done and EVERYTHING takes a turn for the worst. Epic. There's a reason I mentioned it first in my list =)

Torment..
I must've played some games over the years with bittersweet endings, but, memory isn't as good as it once ways.

But with Halo : Reach, it's incredible. You already [i]know[/b] that you'll die. Some of your pals die in ignominious cutscene deaths, but... it was all done in that heroic tone. Jorge was probably the acest of them all. Then Emile. Then everyone else. And then you, Noble 6, the last SPARTAN standing on Reach.

But it delivered what it said on the tin, you, Noble 6, delivered hope. Plenty more than what you delivered at the end of ME 3, I would say.

And on a side note, Fable 3 ended on a slightly bittersweet note. You could see it coming from miles away, but it still stirred up an emotion or two.

Bioshock's ending was perhaps the first game I played where the main character could die in the end and I honestly felt happy for him (the happy ending). It just seemed so right to me even though it was very sad

This. The ending to Bioshock 1 (and 2, to an extent) was very well done bittersweet.

Wow, is the void even more obscure than I thought it was?
I thought that sending one of the sisters to the next plane of existence was kinda sad while the void is falling apart around you, sinking into the nightmare.

I hated Red Dead's ending though. It made me honestly frustrated. Everything that John wanted his son NOT to be, he became. The entire game was a moot point, because it was all futile in the end. I hate those kinds of games.

It's also why I hate Mass Effect 3's ending.
