Planescape:Torment, hands down. When Nameless said goodbye to his friends and then went off to fight in the Blood War, I felt really sad and completely satisfied. Great ending to a superb game.

Also liked the ending slides to Mask of the Betrayer. They wrapped up my Knight-Captain's story nicely, and allowed her to find happiness with Gann, but Kaelyn the Dove's fate was very sad :( I do wish I could have torn down the Wall of the Faithless - not even Bishop deserved that for eternity :/

Red Dead Redemption had me stunned. Brilliant ending, reunification followed by the inevitable tragedy. I loved the dialog between Marston and his troubled son as they rode around performing chores and daily work. Such a great game.

Halo: Reach takes the cake for my favorite bittersweet ending. Though I suppose if you never played Halo, you wouldn't understand why. Then again, I don;t remember Bungie or Microsoft pushing Reach as a great point for newcomers to enter the series. Not sure why ME3 should have been the time to pick up new players.

This.  I knew what happened to Reach from the books and earlier games, but didn't realize I would be pulling an "Alamo" in the game.  Being a vet, that resonated with me, "Greater love hath no man than this...." and all.

Legacy Of Kain series. All the games have a bittersweet ending, with Defiance being a clear winner.

Yeeeessss. Glad to see I'm not the only one that enjoyed those games.

VA crew there was almost as good as ME's. Simon Templeman as Kain was great, and RIP Tony Jay :(

Personally, I'd say the Legacy of Kain cast was better than ME's. No one says their lines with such savage pleasure as Templeman. Kain and Raziel in general were fantastic protagonists.

Red Dead Redemption, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Shadow of the Colossus... there's plenty of well handled bittersweet endings. I was actually finishing Metal Gear Solid 3 last night as it happens. Very nice, in a Metal Gear sort of way.

The best bittersweet ending is the ending of Mafia II. Brilliantly done!

The Legacy of Kain series is my all-time favorite, alongside Mass Effect. Good call, OP.

I always wanted to see one final game, to see Kain save Nosgoth, but it's better left undone without Amy Hennig, I think.

You (MODS) do realize this thread has nothing to do with the ME3 campaign, right...? Why does this thread get to stay while others don't?

The "Deliver Hope" trailer, where we see what happened to the previous Noble six, is another great example of this:

Warhammer 40,000: SPEESH MEHREEN has a surprisingly bittersweet ending. Granted, it's hopeful considering the setting, but still.

I enjoyed MGS4, but the ending couldn't hold a candle to MGS3, if you ask me.

MGS1 actually had a pretty good ending, too, with the uncertainty about FOXDIE.

Did you know that Jennifer Hale (the VO actor for Mass Effect's female Commander Shepard) has done VO work in the Metal Gear Solid series as Dr. Naomi Hunter and Emma "E.E." Emmerich?

Indeed, when I saw that, it completely blew me away.  The Taking Back Earth trailer for ME3 stirred the same feelings, but then, well...

The voice acting in LoK is the one I compare all games to. If they can be at least half as good, they did a good job. The only games I have seen that come close to that kind of quality is Gabriel Knight 3 and The Bard's Tale (both emloyed almost or all of the cast members XD)

Halo 3. It was bittersweet. You've saved the galaxy, yet you've been spaced.

Ultima IX, whatever issues one might have with it, had a pretty bittersweet ending - sacrifice yourself to save the world because it turns out that it's the manifestation of all your negative traits that's causing problems here.

Ultima VIII, for that matter, had a pretty bleak ending. 'So everything you've been fighting for in Britannia? Yeah, to get home, you're going to have to completely abandon your values. Have fun.'

Woah! That last bit is a core component of what people find wrong with ME3's ending.

Where was this guy for the peer review? :o

More games with a bittersweet ending:

Grandia 2 - saved the world, friends and family dead, the world's religion is undone, hero dumps his 2 girlfriends and takes off.
Warcraft 3 and the Frozen Throne expansion.
Guild Wars: Eye of the North - save the world from eldrich abomination, an entire race goes extinct, also you awaken new horrors, that'll bite your descendants in the rear.
ES4: Oblivion - main campaign.

I know what you mean there.

As for endings where Shep sacrifices him/herself, I was hoping we might get something as perfectly bittersweet as this:

Perhaps with the DLC, you think?

Zelda: Wind Waker was beautifully bittersweet. The fact that you defeated Ganondorf but had to let Hyrule be destroyed as a result killing your companion throughout the game was really sad

Fallout definitly had a great one.

You did all that work, saved everybody you've ever known in the Vault, and they cast you out. That simple video of the VD walking away still gets me.

For unexpected endings that resonate and end well but bittersweet you can't get by Red Dead Redemption.

It's got a better ending than some cinematic western classics

I thought the MGS4 ending was just as good as the MGS3 since we got closure for the whole cast of characters and all the questions we had about MGS Universe granted some were forced (Nano-meachines). But none the less it is quite the impressive feat given what MGS2 did to the story. Not to mention I love the final Boss fight with Liquid Ocelot where he switches battle stances 4 times during the fight to represent the 4 diferent games of the MGS series he was in. (still get chills when "snake eater" starts playing during his third battle stance change).  It was also cool the final boss was was the first boss you ever fought in MGS series (Ocelot), It has a real cool the "circle is now complete" feel to it.
