Ultima VIII, for that matter, had a pretty bleak ending. 'So everything you've been fighting for in Britannia? Yeah, to get home, you're going to have to completely abandon your values. Have fun.'
Where was this guy for the peer review?
The best bittersweet ending in Video Game History... its not ME

Ultima IX, whatever issues one might have with it, had a pretty bittersweet ending - sacrifice yourself to save the world because it turns out that it's the manifestation of all your negative traits that's causing problems here.

I like the idea of sacrifcing for the greater good (from time to time mind you, give me a few games where I slay the dragon, save the damsel in distress and then live like a King). I loved the effect of the US ending for DAO, and I can defintely get behind Sheperd sacrificing himself and others to defeat the reapers (just hopefully with some more explanation and closure.)
But I have a hard time with U9, I never liked that the guardian was a manifestation of the avatar's negative traits. I just didn't like the story hook, didn't like the implications for reinterpreting U7, U7-2, and U-8. Also the various story moments of U9 that drove me up the wall just made the ending all that harder to digest. Meh, I'm still bitter about U9.

FFX
MGS3
Planescape Torment
FF7 Crisis Core
FF7 until they did Advent Children, because you didn´t know if everyone except for Red XIII survived
My personal favorite is Gurenn Lagann Anime Series.
Not just the ending, but the whole Series after Kaminas death had a bittersweet touch on it, and many really good characters died till the end.
SPOILER
Best bittersweet moment was after Simon´s and Nias Wedding, when both reveal at the end, that Nia will disappear very soon, because she is a product of the Anti-Spirals.

I understand there's a lot of Halo hate on these forums :')
But yeah, the final scene where Noble 6 stays behind to give the POA time to escape, sacrificing himself, the fact all of Noble team bar Jun die fighting against silly odds,
And especially the epilogue scene, showing his shattered helmet, gave me goosebumps,
It was one of those endings that left me with that empty feeling in my stomach, ME3 however, left me with that, and anger.
Hence why I preferred the ending to the former.

Just finished Bastion a little while ago. Now THAT was an ending.
Suuuuuuuch a good game. Themes of learning from the past and...well I can't really go into it without laying down some massive Spoilers.
Hey people! Play Bastion whilst we wait to see if this Extended cut stuff works out!
I would, but I can finish bastion in a few hours

- FFX
- RDR
And to show that Bioware actually DOES know how to do it: Dragon Age Origins.
Most assuredly NOT ME3.

The "Deliver Hope" trailer, where we see what happened to the previous Noble six, is another great example of this:
Indeed, when I saw that, it completely blew me away. The Taking Back Earth trailer for ME3 stirred the same feelings, but then, well...
I know what you mean there.
As for endings where Shep sacrifices him/herself, I was hoping we might get something as perfectly bittersweet as this:
Perhaps with the DLC, you think?
Cowboy Bebop. Possibly the single best thing to come out of Japan, ever.

FFX was good, true. I would have to put forward Breath of Fire 2. It's old (and I later learned that if you did it right the ending could be happy) but it ended with the main character (Potentially) sacrificing himself to keep a demon buried. It was really good I thought.
How long has Bioware been stealing endings?

That's a banal stock ending. Hell, Doom 64 had that ending. You hear that, people? Doom 64, the "proper" Doom 3 (as it wraps up what little plot Doom and Doom 2 had), ended like that too!Omilophile wrote...

I think, that in most recent games, L.A. Noire did a good job with it's ending.
What!? I hated the ending.. It felt rushed and to me wasn't sweet in any way!
Yeah I can see where you're coming from, but I pretty much expected it and found it effective. The same reason in reverse why the Mass Effect 3 ending didn't work for me. I mean the title has Noire in it, how much more obvious can you get.
But in L.A. Noire's case it was effective, though short. Cole Phelps was a tragic hero, as is Mordin Solus. Both of them redeem themselves in the end (well Mordin only does if you let him cure the Genophage) by sacrifizing themselves to help others. Phelps had his past in the war where he had not been brave, where his cowardize has caused a lot of suffering and pain and death. By being brave and saving everyone from the flooded canalization he redeems himself.
Sure it's not a bittersweet ending which I now realize is what was asked for in this thread, but it is an effective and satisfying ending.
But yeah it's really on the short side, I'll give you that.
