Vanguards is just a difficult class to play. Yesterday I played with a human vanguard who destroyed everything, he was fantastic, he was working extremely fast and ended up first by a huge margin. Some classes you can get away with playing more casually, Vanguards you just can't, you have to be fast and constantly focused, probably more than with any other class.

It is strange how hard it is for some people to keep themselves in cover while being a vanguard. This does not happen with any other class, well maybe some soldiers dont duck into cover but... seems like vanguards cannot. It is easy to get points with vanguards, but it works both ways. It is easier to get killed. Vanguards - here is something to remember Image IPB Picture

This is why I think that all vanguards should do an insanity run of ME2.  It's a great learning experience, it makes you learn when, where, and who to charge, and you basically need to use cover (this is even more crucially important in the early stages, when you don't have lots of upgrades).

Vanguards are just a hard class to play right, that's no reason to hate them.  In fact, I think it's kind of a shame that all of the other classes can get away with making many more mistakes than vanguards can.

Except the point that the VG4Life community likes to ignore is that a terrible member of another class is far less likely to pooch the run than even a mediocre VG on Silver/Gold.  A weak link in another class is a lot easier to carry through a round.  A crummy engineer that spent the entire game spamming chain OL is still contributing without dragging the team down, for example.  Thats not even addressing how lag and bugs affect the class, which is a whole other issue unique to VGs.

And frankly, no, there are a lot more terrible VGs proportionally than other classes, because the class is frankly designed around a certain mentality and requires more skill to play to potential, because timing and risk management are so crucial at Silver and above.  Its not like an Adept where you can just duck behind a wall and spam powers, or a soldier where you just follow people around and lay down support fire.  It requires a level of speed and skill that the bulk of the community is frankly lacking in.

I'll be sure to remember all that next time I'm in a lobby with an Engie spamming Energy Drain/Overload on Brutes, or an Infiltrator with an Avenger.

Anyone struggling with vanguards should try the Asari or Drell (or recommend those races to their awful-at-vanguard friends!). Their lack of Nova naturally drives you to rely more on your teammates, and be less reckless about where and whom you charge. I was way better at MANGUARD after taking an Asari up to level 20. Nova felt like a bonus rather than a crutch after that.

The fact that you are practicing by soloing and you fail to see how this could be a problem when you suddenly have three team members kind of highlights my point.

No it doesn't.  Playing solo is different from playing with a team, I play solo to understand and practise my situational awareness and basic mechanics of the class, not to dominate.  I feel I can't contribute to a team if I don't have my act together.  Knowing when and who to charge, if I should nova cancel, which mobs will melee stagger me, etc.  You completely misunderstood my practise and experimenting with evidence for vanguards lone wolves.

I _DO_ play suport.  My AA, GE, and AJ are all specced with team friendly setups and I play them as such.  Its hard to play as a team, though, when one of the people acts like there isn't one.  Hint: Its not the other three guys who would be just fine with any other class.

If you play support with a vanguard and things are not working out then it is one of 3 things: you are doing it wrong, the vangaurd is doing it wrong, or both.  There are many posts and even vidoes of how to support a vanguard, how to play a vanguard and you choose to ignore them all.  It's just you, you can't adapt to another playstyle and you can't admit it so you blame the vanguard class.

Err...  Just to say, Single Nova Vanguards actually can't afford to go into cover for extended periods of time, because if they start charging again, they will die.  Because of the way the Nova Recharge Bonus stacks on it's self, you absolutely have to keep using it in order to be effective, and in order to maximize your survivability and damage (Yes, for single nova vanguards they do in fact go hand in hand), you have to charge and nova, not just stay back and nova.

Finally, a good Vanguard will probably be weaving in and out of cover while he does his charge and nova thing until he's got his maxmium stacks of recharge, in which case he will just not stop charging and novain' until everythings dead, or until somebody needs a revive, or support.

Err..

Just Sayian.

@Zenning: Yes. A vanguard who knows what to do, is quite pleasant to play with.

He might be depends on the ending.
Back to topic... If your a vanguard and your half decent I won't have a problem
just don't expect me to keep running across the map to save your ass

I've rocked plenty of Bronze maps as the "Charge in and melee everyone" Asari Vanguard, but once I bumped up to Silver and then tried Gold, I found myself to be a liability and would end up a corpse very early on.

So I started using Stasis and moving from being a wrecking machine to being crowd control. Unfortunately, now I play with infiltrators who end up sniping the enemy I freeze and am aiming at before I can pull the trigger and my score suffers. :(

Plenty of assists doesn't have the same impact as plenty of kills.

Still, better to get a lower score and be part of the team on gold rather than getting splattered while trying to pretend I'm a tank.

I hated vanguards and couldn't understand how people could play as them, until I learned how to level them properly and learn the playstyle. Now I have a human vanguard whom I can use to solo bronze, haven't tried silver yet.

True that. Nova is great crowd control and damage dealer. But there are those three other non-human vanguards, you cant nova with them. They have to duck into cover. Of course not for long until you will get overrun. Good for you, when you know your business. You are one of those 5-10% who can actually survive more than bronze. This is just why vanguards keep getting kicked. Hell, i would like to play with your kind someday. Pro vanguards just don't appear in publics. :P

Not really.

If there are 1000 total vanguards, and 900 suck.  That's a lot.

If 100 are awesome.  That's plenty.

Now, now. We never really established what "a lot" and "plenty" stand for in the numerical department ;P

Anyhoo. I can respect people who can play vanguard, but i absolutely hate someone who thinks krogan vanguard is cool and can take on any enemy in the game. This resulting in face down time galore.

If you can avoid the temptation of "Charging" everything you see, krogan vanguard can be played in an effective way.

But keep in mind the "bronze" playstyle won't work in Gold. Some people tend to forget that.

actually i do not have a problem with vanguards, if they can get things done, and successfully finish the match, so be it. Perhaps, the other players does not like to be outdone in the scoring after each match. Vanguards can easily wipe out a horde of low level to mid level targets, and there are no other easy targets left to aimed at, does the hate on the vanguards.

I have run ups in random matches where a quarian infiltrator was mad at me (MIC) for finishing off his targets, did not play as a Vanguard, was using the assault striker rifle on my Asari Justicar, which is very effective in crowd control & finishing off hordes of low level targets.

The point being to avoid the vanguard 'falling through the world bug' by hosting. No pickup lines will save you from that one, unfortunatly. :pinched:

Also, people are stupid. I rock on my novaguard. I just wish I found more overload spammers like me when I'm on my engineers so I can set of more explosions :<

I still carry my carnifex for those pesky pyros, banshees and other no charge situations.

I'm quite new to the multiplayer experience in ME3, and I started a vanguard charater out of curiousity. It's a fun, fast paced character to play but I totally understand what you're getting at here in the forum. It's a class that encourages head on fights by its design, essentially making you more powerful and in some cases, more useful for the team if you are out there, cracking heads.

However, I'm looking for tips for the later stages, silver and gold. What would be a reasonable play style that ensures survival and benefitting the team at the same time?
