I think I read somewhere they wanted to do it in a harbour city which is fine. Personally I think they should have done Sydney, since it has some of the most recognisable harbour landmarks in the world. I am however a little biased :D

I think Sydney or Hong Kong would've been interesting choices.

They could have fixed that with adding like, over time some news reports from earth, like ingame videos how reapers are destroying everything, some videos from resistance and such, just to let us see what happens on earth while we are away, sure we already know what happens but just to visually see it.

They should have had a scene with normal people living normal lives in the beginning. Preferably a busy street with cafes and restaurants and stuff like that. Make Earth feel lived in and connected with the lives we, as the player, live every day.

I think they tried to go into a little bit of that with the kid playing with his toy spaceship on the grass. They tied that up later on when meeting the same kid in the vent, and then used it symbolically with the dreams in the  "Earthly forest". Maybe they thought that would be sufficient to suggest a strong link to Earth, instead of memories of a military office or a random city street.

Hell they could've had Emily Wong making reports from Earth instead of this death by Twitter garbage. Say they get footage smuggled out somehow on a regular basis.
They could splice in vids of that into the Citadel news screens instead of constantly having Dull McBoring continually read out headlines there.

I think what we really needed wasn't more stuff about the resistance, but more stuff about Earth before the invasion.

In particular, I think it needed a hook - something to make the place actually interesting, rather than just Generic Future Planet

I meant to reply to this earlier, but UGH the kid? WHY?!

His death was sad, I guess, but not enough to merit recurring dreams and then the Catalyst appearing in his form. Whaaaaat.

Their attempt at making him their human link was a bit flawed imo. unless the whole game was him making up a story, and then it's just art. Dirty, sex-filled art.

Emily Wong's weird twitter death made me really sad when I found out about it :( I don't even get why this happened. So much potential wasted :(

Not particularly. I also spent the majority of the game wondering why I was talking the various races into abandoning their own homeworlds for the sake of taking back Earth, when theirs was obviously just as devastated. Or, for that matter, why anyone really cared about Earth beyond symbolism: it's just a planet, guys.

Because they were building the Crucible somewhere near Earth's system, and needed a big fleet to protect it, plus assests to build it?

They didn't know what it would do, but I can imagine they planned to use it there and then as soon as ready. They didn't know of the need for a "Catalyst" then, of course.

Since the Crucible arrived via the mass relay, I don't even know where they were building it.

The only connection I ever felt was Shep being human, that's all. Earth is just another planet and I'm saving it because people need to be saved. I didn't feel like I was retaking my home, I just felt like it was just another mission.
Strange Aeons made a post about this somewhere and I agree "the Normandy is my home and the crew (particularly Tali, Garrus and Liara) are my family." I fought for the people I care about, I never really felt like I was fighting for humanity.

Nope, but that's down to poor storytelling rather than anything else.

We should have had to fight the Reapers in Japan. We could have had Godzilla vs Harbinger :3

Instead of the "Ominous Forest" I would have liked to see memories of earth based on your backstory. like earthborn shep remembering his neighborhood and seeing obliterated or spacer shep remeberuing the first time his family took him there alomg with a mention of his/her father. Idk Earth just didnt feel like the birthplace of humanity on its last legs vs the reapers.

Yes, but not the introduction earth but London. When I saw the architecture I noticed how different it was from all the other alien worlds and it felt like home.

Which doesn't make a lot of sense since my Shepard is a colonist.

I don't think Shep has been to earth in previous games? Our home was the Normandy, or the citadel. If we saw actual recognizable landmarks being destroyed and regular civillians and families instead of only soldiers there might have been more connection. (Sorry I didn't recognize Vancouver at all and I lived there).

I was talking with somebody about how cool it would have been if the various backstory variations could have trigger memories in "like" moments. Like a sole survivor could remember akuze when dealing with kalross.

I am telling you, if we were able to run around an earth city, talk to people. Do little token quests, get information to chew on. A connection would have been made.

It should be noted, that Shepard has no fondness for earth in any backstory. Spacer? Spent his life on ships, never probably been to Earth. Colonist? Hah, funny joke, liking Earth, heh, good one. Earthborn? When you visit Eden Prime in ME3, Earthborn Shep has nothing but venom to say concerning his/her childhood.

I'm firmly in the "we should have had a trial section in the intro" camp, as it would have let you form an emotional attachment as well as justify the bizarre sentimentality Shepard shows when discussing Earth with Tali in London (dunno if he only does it if he's a Talimancer, though).

Not at all. I also did not feel any connection with that stupid kid, those dream parts really annoyed me.

I can't say I felt that bad for Earth - the people sure but it wasn't the only place suffering. Putting the kid in at the start was a pretty good emotional beginning though.

I feel more attached to the Normandy, given that's where you spend a good portion of the time. And she's one damn fine ship.
