I felt attached. Too bad I didn't feel that I helped free her. But I almost felt more attached to Palaven, the sense of chaos was way stronger on it's moon.

Nope. No one my Shepard cared about had any strong connection to Earth, either. The loss of the Citadel hit her like a ton of bricks. Earth- not so much.

No, I didn't feel particularly connected to Thessia either. I really think they should have had us spend more time on both places if they really wanted us to care about them. Even after seeing promotions I never expected the whole game to really be centered around taking back earth.

Yep, especially after the dialogue with Garrus about the orange spot being where his home was and his dad and sister being trapped there.

But it's okay because I know somewhere on Palaven techno turian is dancing in the name of freedom.

We were given 2 missions in London of all places.

I wanted to see the global impact of the war with the reapers.

No. There's actually a long previous thread about the forced Earth-centrism.

For most cases, Shepard would in fact have strong feelings about Earth, but many Shepards would be more focused on the big picture (as in, it actually makes sense to try to liberate the other places when the Reapers are focused on Earth, for example), and some might just not care about Earth at all.

You can make fantastic arguments for each of these. I don't care how well you can explain how Shepard should care. It's in fact a completely pointless endeavour to try, because each person is only right about their Shepard, not everyone else's.

The game could easily, and with 0 plot changes, have given Shepard more neutral dialogue and reactions, thus enabling more players to identify stronger with their Shepard. Forcing emotions and reactions in an RPG diminishes the player's emotional attachment.

Partially inspired by that thread, see my dialogue enhancements thread in the signature. I'm collecting places where additional dialogue would have been useful. Please help me compile them.

It would have been fine if they had tried to jutsify why earth was such a priority, like that was where the bulk of the reaper forces were or that they had to prevent the reapers from adding to their forces by building human-reapers (though the concept of destroyers throws this out of an airlock). As it stands now we just get "Man, we have to save earth. Earth for liiiiiiiife, yeaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!"
Or maybe they could have let our Sheps choose why he/she was so desperate for earth: Shep was born there, Shep wanted to save Anderson, or maybe Shep wanted to kick Harbinger's ass seven ways to hell and was out for revenge.

I did not feel connected to Earth, in fact I do not think I fet that connected to any of the homeworlds.

I think I actually cared most for the people on the Citadel.

this also. How am I supposed to feel connected to a place (in game) I don't have any connection too. I mean this is earth in 2185 not the earth I live on (the earth I live on would never put the head of it's military in Canada let's be real) and we really only see a few cut scenes in one building and then run around some debris. How could I build a connection to that.

I think it's one of those irritating 'narrative convenience' things : which I'm sure you know already. I agree that literally everyone in the Alliance should know that Shep is too important to be held in prison for like 6 months though!

I even bought Arrival but that's not really much of an explanation. SHEPARD DOES NOT CARE ABOUT BATARIANS (even as a paragon)

Indeed. Also, I don't buy the "refitting Normandy" excuse. Give Shepard another ship and off they go.
In fact, give Shepard her mom's ship. Because that would be awesome. Non spacers could get some other dreadnought.

But anyway yeah Batarians. Basically Shepard's in jail just to please the damn Batarians. My Shepard would be so pissed off.
Especially since, partly due to this, the Batarians are now all dead. Nice one Alliance! Screwing everybody over for minor and temporary political convenience.

BUT EVERYONE HATES BATARIANS SO ITS NOT EVEN AN APPEASEMENT THING. also they still have their homeworld, right? she only blew up a colony or something.

THIS DOESNT HELP ANYONE.

plus weren't they all dead by the time the game starts, who were they even trying to appease.

I did not care much about Earth, the problem is also that I was in real London, beyond Big Ben I have not really recognized much in the city made by Bioware... what is a pity. Having some more landmarks that are known would make us care more about it. Also spending more time on Earth (typically in the previous games) would help for that ... now it is too late for it.

Not really.
More importantly, my Shepard didn't, or shouldn't. She's a spacer who leans on the renegade side of things.
Putting Earth on a pedestal like some precious jewel while all these other planets are in equally dire situations made no sense, aside from "humans, rar!".

Personally I felt more connected to Palaven, even though we never go there. Because at least the Turians were kicking the Reapers in the teeth for every inch they took and didn't roll over and go "IT'S HOPELESS!" like everyone else.

I played a Spacer paragon and even then I had trouble finding any meaning in things. As a paragon, I was totally pro-alien and equality among all species. Why would Earth be special?

It seems like an Earthborn would have had more of a connection, but I don't think anything was done to promote this?

I really wanted to actually go to Palaven :( and Thessia (pre-destruction), and Dekuuna (I just love Elcor :( )

Because you're playing a general story, and the general story says Shepard is Pro-Alliance, and Pro-Alliance means help Humanity, save Earth.  Doesn't matter what you chose.  Just like Shepard being a Spectre.  PR move for the Alliance, not because you're awesome.

the general story also has the alliance kind of screwing Shepard over at the end of ME1 and through the majority of ME2 and can have renegade shepard pretty much say "eff the alliance" through most of ME2. So why does he suddenly have to become super pro Alliance in ME3? They basically set ME2 up so you could end up either more siding with the Alliance or more siding with Ceberus and then completely erase that for ME3.

And yes I KNOW it would have taken a lot more work to do more divergent story-lines but that doesn't mean it's entirely impossible. It only became impossible once they decided to suddenly make Ceberus this super powerful army (which still is never explained) and one of the antagonists, which is a narrative choice they made for unexplained reasons (and which doesn't even make a ton of sense in universe)

Not even a little. Every time Shepard went off about Earth, I felt like the writers were trying to directly appeal to the player. The auto-dialog didn't help either.

I liked the anti air gun part and the beam rush. The rest was just a dark grey blur with giant red phone booths strewn about. So the beginning and the end. The middle, eh just a whole bunch of brutes.

Maybe if I'd ever been to london I'd have recognized more than big ben. Anyone from london feel sad at the end?

No, I don't. Like someone else said here some time ago, if I have to choose between Earth and all other lifeforms in the galaxy, I would sacrifice Earth.

Mass Effect is about Garrus, Tali, Wrex, Mordin, the krogan, asari, quarians and salarians. Humans are just along for the ride.

No. I felt connected to Tuchanka, The citadel, I even felt more connected to Rannoch, just because of all the mystery around it. Earth felt incredibly disconnected and i feel "take back earth" was a terrible tag line.

I didn't feel that connected either. If they had let me explore Earth before it was invaded, I would probably have more an investment in it.

But then, my Shep is a Spacer.
