I still believe that exploring uncharted worlds in a vehicle should have stayed. That part of the first game had it's problems, but it could have been improved by making the maps easier to traverse, introducing a vehicle that moves and controls better and making it more clear on where things are on the map and when there is nothing left to find so you don't keep wasting your time.

I'm currently revisiting ME1 after not even looking at it for 2-3 years. It's definitely something special, I'm finding the change of pace and attitude from ME2 onwards quite jarring too (exploration sacrificed for action).

I remember how annoying it was to get to certain spots with the Mako (aka brick with wheels).

But now it's gone and I miss it :(

With nostalgia glasses even the overheating mechanic of mass effect 1 was amazing.

It was amazing once you got the Spectre rifle with two lvl 10 frictionless materials upgrades. Non-stop chaingun of DOOM!

But yeah, I miss the chance to feel like you're really blazing a trail in the Galaxy, finding new places seen only by a select few, pioneering Humanity's cause.

Despite the fact that a lot of worlds looked a bit too similar, the feeling of a vast unexplored galaxy was never truly brought back in either sequel.

The bits on the main missions were fun, but it was terrible when you were exploring worlds!

Yeah the main quest worlds were a lot better than the other ones. If they'd all had been of the same quality it'd been great.

What bugged me even more was that almost all the side quests took place in locations that looked pretty much exactly the same. Some anonymous facility with the same layout and so on. That got old after a while.

I was half expecting a reference or revisit to the generic flat-pack sidequest buildings and dull driving sections in Mass Effect. It would have made for a nice bit of self-deprecatory fan service.

If I want "exploration" I'm going to go play Skyrim. I don't play ME to drive a vehicle up mountains on an uninteresting planet.

These moments would have been brilliant... if they didn't involve the Mako. What an awful piece of game design that thing was.

Why?

I miss planetary exploration. Me 1 lacked brilliant worlds like me2s hammerhead. But the hammerhead doesn't compare in combat. I really how they throw us some explore dlc

Talking about vehicle sections, did anyone else wish [spoilers] the part where you go after Kai Leng was a LotSB-style car chase through the Presidium, complete with with diving under bridges and skimming the surface of the water, attacks from Cerberus troopers shooting at you and trying to ram you, and a fly-past of the section of the Presidium we saw in the first game? (free) DLC maybe Bioware?

I remember ME2 suicide mission, when choices actually had an effect.

Yes, I remember.

I also remember the amount of time I sunk into it. Bot really complaining, but more being upset taht I did so much only to get a LITTLE more experience and credits when it didn't really matter.

That being said, in ME1, everything was a mystery. We had to take the time to learn about the galaxy we were in, those we shared it with, and what motivation we were going to have for the next two installments. I honestly remember thinking to myself, "Oh, 'Krogan.' They sound like this universe's 'wookies.' "

After we learned the truth of the Reapers, that was pretty much it. The mystery was gone. We knew what we had to do. The only question was could we and how.

I think that lack of "true mystery" is what made ME2 and ME3's stories seem to plae in comparison to ME1's.

Because exploring different colored variations of a rocky planet was SOOO fun.

Here come the "endings were foreshadowed" posts...

The Makos inability to drive at a 90 degree angle was warning us that no matter how hard we try, in the end the player fail. Also, choose Red!

I never complained about the Mako or exploration, I loved them! I remember my first time I landed on a uncharted planet and got attacked by a thresher Maw, I was in awe. I really fealt there was a huge scope to the universe in ME1.

This.

The second two really failed to capture that sense of exploration and discovery, battling thresher maws on deserted planets, or hearing rachni on the moon, or coming face to face with some shifty looking cows.

And all those pretty colours and lighting coming from moons and suns. It was glorious... GLORIOUS.

Because it handles like... I can't even think of something that handles terribly enough for me to make the comparison. Just really frustrating. I didn't quite realise how much I hated the Mako at the time, but I've recently gone back to replay ME1 and 5 minutes of having to (attempt to) control that thing makes me want to put the controller through the screen.

It was a pointless waste of time. Exploration should never have been part of Shepard's job. At least the later games got this right.

Edit: obviously, that's IMHO. But it seems pretty clear to me that Bio made a mistake when they put vehicle exploration into ME1. It didn't have anything to do with the character they had or the story they were telling.

The Mako itself wasn't terrible, it was the jagged mountain edges of doom on all those planets that made it unlikable for some. I was expecting the side missions in ME3 to be more like Overlord quality, but less quantity, to make each feel special and unique - and hey, why not involve the Mako!

i miss it.

id have flattened out of the UNC planets tho, and gave the option to be dropped closer to your destination. or the hammerhead woulda been fine in ME1 as long as it had better shielding.
