With nostalgia glasses even the overheating mechanic of mass effect 1 was amazing.
It was amazing once you got the Spectre rifle with two lvl 10 frictionless materials upgrades. Non-stop chaingun of DOOM!
But yeah, I miss the chance to feel like you're really blazing a trail in the Galaxy, finding new places seen only by a select few, pioneering Humanity's cause.

The Mako sections felt like beating my head against a wall. I don't miss them.
The bits on the main missions were fun, but it was terrible when you were exploring worlds!

Yeah the main quest worlds were a lot better than the other ones. If they'd all had been of the same quality it'd been great.
What bugged me even more was that almost all the side quests took place in locations that looked pretty much exactly the same. Some anonymous facility with the same layout and so on. That got old after a while.

These moments would have been brilliant... if they didn't involve the Mako. What an awful piece of game design that thing was.

I also remember the amount of time I sunk into it. Bot really complaining, but more being upset taht I did so much only to get a LITTLE more experience and credits when it didn't really matter.
That being said, in ME1, everything was a mystery. We had to take the time to learn about the galaxy we were in, those we shared it with, and what motivation we were going to have for the next two installments. I honestly remember thinking to myself, "Oh, 'Krogan.' They sound like this universe's 'wookies.' "
After we learned the truth of the Reapers, that was pretty much it. The mystery was gone. We knew what we had to do. The only question was could we and how.
I think that lack of "true mystery" is what made ME2 and ME3's stories seem to plae in comparison to ME1's.

Because exploring different colored variations of a rocky planet was SOOO fun.
Here come the "endings were foreshadowed" posts...
The Makos inability to drive at a 90 degree angle was warning us that no matter how hard we try, in the end the player fail. Also, choose Red!

This.
The second two really failed to capture that sense of exploration and discovery, battling thresher maws on deserted planets, or hearing rachni on the moon, or coming face to face with some shifty looking cows.
And all those pretty colours and lighting coming from moons and suns. It was glorious... GLORIOUS.

Because it handles like... I can't even think of something that handles terribly enough for me to make the comparison. Just really frustrating. I didn't quite realise how much I hated the Mako at the time, but I've recently gone back to replay ME1 and 5 minutes of having to (attempt to) control that thing makes me want to put the controller through the screen.jreezy wrote...

It was a pointless waste of time. Exploration should never have been part of Shepard's job. At least the later games got this right.
Edit: obviously, that's IMHO. But it seems pretty clear to me that Bio made a mistake when they put vehicle exploration into ME1. It didn't have anything to do with the character they had or the story they were telling.

id have flattened out of the UNC planets tho, and gave the option to be dropped closer to your destination. or the hammerhead woulda been fine in ME1 as long as it had better shielding.
