Just the "no ones ever stood in this spot" moments.... brilliant!!

This.

The second two really failed to capture that sense of exploration and discovery, battling thresher maws on deserted planets, or hearing rachni on the moon, or coming face to face with some shifty looking cows.

And all those pretty colours and lighting coming from moons and suns. It was glorious... GLORIOUS.

It was a pointless waste of time. Exploration should never have been part of Shepard's job. At least the later games got this right.

Edit: obviously, that's IMHO. But it seems pretty clear to me that Bio made a mistake when they put vehicle exploration into ME1. It didn't have anything to do with the character they had or the story they were telling.

Agreed.

As much as I loved ME1, exploring the planets was pointless. You are a spectre on a mission to stop the end of the galaxy as you know it not a deep space explorer.

Why?

Because it handles like... I can't even think of something that handles terribly enough for me to make the comparison. Just really frustrating. I didn't quite realise how much I hated the Mako at the time, but I've recently gone back to replay ME1 and 5 minutes of having to (attempt to) control that thing makes me want to put the controller through the screen.

Of course.... the Mako really needed some nice worlds to discover, and more than the 3 buildings Bioware cookie cut from world to world.

And what about trees? I mean really? Does Bioware hate trees? One BioWare designer could not have put one solitary tree on one planet somewhere in ME1?

OP: Why yes I do.

Currently replaying ME1 for the first time in years and find I enjoy stepping on to worlds and exploring that square mile sometimes just to see those vistas. Other times the challenge of "conquering" the environment. For me in this game the world exploration adds scope and richness to the game world and gameplay.

"Meeting" Kaiden, Liara, Garrus, Tali, Jenkins, Ashley and Wrex again from the start...it's cool too. They all look or sound so young compared to later games (heh, even Wrex). So far, I'm taking my time and paying attention to any foreshadowing that ties to ME 2 and especially ME3 at points...though mostly I'm just replaying to play and have fun.

The Mako: the first time through I liked the concept of it but hated the execution and growled through the exploration. This time? I'm making "Dukes of Hazard" yells as I bounce and dive off mountainsides while trying to control the sucker before I run into a Thresher Maw - and I'm having a great time. So far between that and the Hammerhead...I'd rather the Mako. But maybe I'll feel different about that when I get to ME2 again.

I liked the overheating  :?  ME2/3 feels like every other generic shooter.

The reason why I replay ME1 far more often than ME2. And probably ME3 now as well. ME1 stands too well on its own. Better on its own, in fact.

I agree personally for me it just felt more polished and overal more fun (aside from the popup animations) ...I use to try to find the highest mountain on the planet and look out through the horizon was awesome.

I also think when Saren is holding you by the throat on Virmire is still the greatest moment in Mass Effect 1-3 for me.

Yeah, the Mako/exploring uncharted worlds was actually one of my favorite parts of ME1. I've noticed I seem to be in the minority on that, though.

Loved the exploration, hated the mako. Would it have been that difficult to give us a shuttlecraft instead, something that flew instead of drove? And what were those tires made of, flubber? You hit one little bump and suddenly you're bouncing around all over the place. But the most annoying thing was that it was inconsistant. There were some mountains that you could climb that were practically straight up and down. But other, more gentle slopes, you would get stuck and have to figure out some other way around.

It handles like a refrigerator on roller skates with flubber tires that is being driven by a drunk lobotomy patient.

Preferred Elevator's to Loading screens...particularly the ugly florescent ones from ME2...
I complained about the Mako physics and the uncharted world design. I loved the concept, but hated the action. I got to the top of a mountain only to fly over it and down the opposite side too many times.

Ripping it out entirely was a mistake. The Mako needed to be fixed...not destroyed.

ME1 was difficult for me to get into. I think this was due to choosing soldier as a class....it was sooooo boring. Just made it a TPS wtih a story.....like any other TPS.

I actually did, but it made it boring which I didn't expect.  Jade Empire, KOTOR, all those games were about combat being different than other games......I forgot this when I picked my class.

Also, I didn't want to start the game and 10 hours into it want to restart it b/c I picked a class that was just cosmetic.  I went too far on the other end though.

Using Gibbed's editor I wrote a random level name on my save and tried to load it up.

Savegame says "Unknown Location" and has a picture of Maji.

I remember doing quite a bit in the Mako. I remember lovely worlds like Maji and looking up at the Great Rift on the planet Klendagon from its moon. I loved how it tied into Mass Effect 2. We saw so many worlds - experienced so much.

Remember how much the Mako helped you out on Ilos? I remember standing there on Ilos, feeling such a sadness for the Protheans. Vigil was one of my favorite characters to meet as well. Ahhh, how I miss that game.

You never felt so immersed in the game as you did back then - exploring worlds, finding giant carnivore skulls out in the desert. Sometimes it was silly too, you could drive 20000000 clicks out and discover that you don't have enough electronics score to open that darned probe.

Where has the Majic gone from this game?

I like how the general reaction to ME1's planet exploration by naysayers seems to be 'pfft, just multicolored rocky terrains with pretty skyboxes'.

..And what do you think ME3's levels were? They were exactly that. Tiny fragments of playable landscape, and skyboxes. Despite the illusion of landscape that ME3 gives you, the actual space you have for traversing it is the least of all three games. I like how people complained that in ME1 the Citadel was 'too big' and there were 'too many long corridors'. I'm sorry, I didn't realize that people lived in houses with corridors that instantly went from their bedrooms to the front door. I guess people must live in so much more tiny homes than I do. The long, winding corridors, the empty spaces and such in ME1 created a sense of immersion.

See, immersion isn't about bombarding the player with flashy explosions and things trying to kill you. If anything, those are the things that distract you from the immersion itself. Immersion is about being able to take a stroll down a road, a corridor, or whatever else and just take it all in while you have the time to just catch your breath and be a little bored - in a good way. I'll take those boring spots where I can stop and admire the view from the Citadel, or hang out by an elevator, or IN an elevator, listening to my friends bantering just behind me while I grin at how, even with the galaxy at stake, we still have these little moments of ours, over the 'ACTION ACTION ACTION' aspects that reek of Michael Bay any day.

Ya see, that's why certain other sci-fi franchises were the huge successes that they were. Star Trek? Standin' around, chatting with people. Babylon 5? Standin' around, chatting with people. Farscape? Standin' around, etc, etc. There was action where there needed to be action. Suspense where there needed to be suspense. The rest of the time? Just taking it all in with stride, wandering new places, talking to people, getting to nurture and develop those characters. This guy here sums it up nicely around the start where he discusses the sci-fi genre as 'talky-techy' and such. That's what ME1 was. Talky-techy. That's why so many of us enjoyed THAT game over the others.
