I like how the general reaction to ME1's planet exploration by naysayers seems to be 'pfft, just multicolored rocky terrains with pretty skyboxes'.
..And what do you think ME3's levels were? They were exactly that. Tiny fragments of playable landscape, and skyboxes. Despite the illusion of landscape that ME3 gives you, the actual space you have for traversing it is the least of all three games. I like how people complained that in ME1 the Citadel was 'too big' and there were 'too many long corridors'. I'm sorry, I didn't realize that people lived in houses with corridors that instantly went from their bedrooms to the front door. I guess people must live in so much more tiny homes than I do. The long, winding corridors, the empty spaces and such in ME1 created a sense of immersion.
See, immersion isn't about bombarding the player with flashy explosions and things trying to kill you. If anything, those are the things that distract you from the immersion itself. Immersion is about being able to take a stroll down a road, a corridor, or whatever else and just take it all in while you have the time to just catch your breath and be a little bored - in a good way. I'll take those boring spots where I can stop and admire the view from the Citadel, or hang out by an elevator, or IN an elevator, listening to my friends bantering just behind me while I grin at how, even with the galaxy at stake, we still have these little moments of ours, over the 'ACTION ACTION ACTION' aspects that reek of Michael Bay any day.
Ya see, that's why certain other sci-fi franchises were the huge successes that they were. Star Trek? Standin' around, chatting with people. Babylon 5? Standin' around, chatting with people. Farscape? Standin' around, etc, etc. There was action where there needed to be action. Suspense where there needed to be suspense. The rest of the time? Just taking it all in with stride, wandering new places, talking to people, getting to nurture and develop those characters.
This guy here sums it up nicely around the start where he discusses the sci-fi genre as 'talky-techy' and such. That's what ME1 was. Talky-techy. That's why so many of us enjoyed THAT game over the others.
