...  those of us who choose to play as mages will always have to repeat the apostate scenario. Does anyone else feel like this is limiting?

I completely understand that the numbers show that humans were, by far, the most popular choice for player race in DA:O, and the numbers don't usually lie. My question is, if our race is narrowed down to human, does that mean that we can't or shouldn't have a few origins choices?

I personally only chose to play as a human on my third playthough when I found it out it could mean spending forever with a certain elevated LI, so I may be the wrong person to ask. But the choice to have only one origin (or player identity) per DA installment has serious consequences, especially for mages (unless Bioware can make it make sense repeatedly for a Warrior or Rogue to escape a Circle or flee Tevinter).

But what do you guys think? Would you be happy with two to four origins options, even playing as a human? Or would you be annoyed by the lack of canon storytelling that that implies?

For instance, in playing DAII, would you have always sticked to playing Hawke, or would you rather have had the option to play as (a gender non-specific, of course) Aveline or Sebastian?

I guess I should say that what I'm NOT asking for is whether you'd rather have other races back as PC options (it kinda sounds like that's off the table anyway, but there's already a thread for it here) - just whether you'd want more than one human origin story if it was available to you.

Bioware IS listening, so if you want 'em, SPEAK UP! Image IPB

I'm use to playing human so it wouldn't be a problem for me. On the other hand i'd love to have one other race choice. Probably Dwarf.

Oh I want more origins. It makes for more replay ablility. Wouldn't miss the canon origins thing.

Sorry, reread your question.   I would like to have multiple origin type stories available, as I would like to see more than one choice of who the protagonist will be (unlike Hawke).    As I mentioned in another thread, I would also be happy to have an Origin style quest for each of your henchmen/followers/companions, so that you can see the world from their perspective,  to validate their reason for joining the "hero" on this quest.

I'd like origin stories put back in. Maybe having just 3 origin stories based on your class (Warrior/Rogue/Mage) would be better than having none at all (like in DA2.)

As for being stuck with the apostate/circle Mage scenario, I suppose it would depend where our hero hails from, if it was somewhere like Tevinter then in theory we'd have more options since magic is used freely out there.

I'd *like* origin stories, but only if they're really good (like most of DAO's were of course) and actually matter later in and throughout the story.

That said, I don't mind if they're not included. I'm quite happy being unremarkable Jonny Hawke from Lothering at the start of the story, as long as I can develop that character as I play. (As opposed to DA2 developing the character for me!)

I'd probably enjoy Origins as well, with the caveat that I understand they don't work with every possible configuration, and I won't be *upset* if they don't return.  Something as simple as having a different OPENING CINEMATIC might be good enough for me--that's an area where they could have actually benefited from the whole "framed narrative" thing.  Doing extra cinematics/monologues is probably cheaper and less resource-intensive than creating entirely new areas populated with NPC's and dialog options and fights etc. etc.

Heck, you know what'd be cool?  If, depending on what race/class you pick for your character, you get a different opening cinematic that is monologued-over BY THE PC, perhaps in kind of a dreamy, detached fashion. Then later on in the story there's a scene where the protagonist gets drugged/enchanted and is ordered to recount their origin, and that's where the monologue comes from.  You wouldn't have to worry about tonal inconsistencies if the player chooses to play Angry Jackass or Saint Francis, because they'd be doped up and not caring.  It'd be a great way to fire off various Chekov's Guns, too, and merge the Origins thing with the Framed Narrative thing.

I would like to have multiple origins avaliable. If I chose to be a mage, I would prefer the protagonist to actually have a mage POV, whether he's an apostate or from one of the Circles of Magi. Being an apostate Hawke left no illegal mage POV in the narrative, since almost all the characters were pretty much blind to the fact that Hawke had magical ability (like Cullen). Even Sebastian never seems to come to the realization that Hawke is an apostate, which should have been addressed like it was with Fenris.

I agree with Lobsel, allow multiple origens, I have nothing against playing a human, hawke being one and my favorites, I just want to kill some divines with a dalish elf.. yeah it sucks is not hawke but meh, death is just that DEATH. :P

But if you couldn't play as an elf, would you still want to have a choice between a couple different human origins to play as? Image IPB

I would certainly like to have more than one background story offered, but would also expect that background to present some other meaningful differences in the character and be reflected in the story.  Since they seem to be more focused on (mostly) pre-defined protags at this point, I don't know how feasible it would be.

It does sound kinda cool, but I would really rather play it than watch it.  Watching the character I am supposed to be playing do things independent of my control only serves to distance me from them.

That would be cool! I do wonder what sort of story narrative they'll pull off this time. We've already had the "real time" event and the "story narrative" so maybe we'll get "death bed flashback" this time round, then when it gets to the end of the game it goes back to real time and you can decide whether you let your PC die or be rescued by his/her companions or something like that.

^ I like it. :D

Guess it goes without saying, I love having origins options and think the devs would be crazy not to bring them back. They were DA:O's signature "wow" feature and, as Pasquale hinted, can really flesh out different parts of the world and its lore.

Also: replayability. Please, please give me a game that I can replay over and over again with different experiences/consequences. That's what DA means to me (though less so since we lost our origins).

I don't know, is this human from the amell family? hawke family then? what about the Human noble from DAO? no? then I pass why? because Hawke is Human why make a new human  a hero/champion when you could still use an older hero/champion? I don't know it seems dumb to me.

Any way No i won't buy a game to play with a new human character, I already have Hawke/ Human mage warden and Human noble warden.

Well, I'm 99% certain that in DAIII we'll have to play as a human, and 100% sure that it will be a human that you've never played before.

But since that's probably happening, would you want to have more than one choice for your character's origin, or would you be happier with just one?

My policy for computer rpg's:  More choices are always better.

I've really wanted this!
I'm hoping we'll get some background option to choose from, I would love to play a circle mage

If nothing else I'm hoping that we at least get a prologue where we get to play as our character during their normal every day life before **** hits the fan, just to get a greater feeling of loss when the new hero is torn away from normality and expected to complete impossible dangerous tasks.

Couldn't agree more. I wasn't sure in DAII how we were supposed to feel bad about fleeing with Hawke when we had no idea what he/she had to leave behind. You could argue that we know what Lothering looked like from DA:O but that's not the same thing at all.

Exactly, plus Lothering would have looked different with the new DA2 art style, it would have been nice to draw comparisons between DA:O and DA2. So, if we're given another human character with say 3 origin stories based on class, what sort of story would you want to see for each?

I agree with this so much. The story would have been alot better if you actually got to go around lothering converse with a few npcs, got to know your sibling before they were smashed down by an ogre

ooh, that's tough without throwing in spoilers. But I'll try. class-specific? Okay...

1.) Mage: there's a unique situation happening with the mages that's revealed at the end of DG's "Asunder" novel. I'd really like to see a mage that's part of that situation be available to us.

2.) Warrior: Orlesian nobleman. Could be so much fun. And who says they're all dandies -- Aveline started out Orlesian!

3.) Rogue: Antivan Crow? Laugh if you want, they're going to have a bustling business when everything goes down in DAIII.

I'd love to hear someone else's ideas too. Image IPB

I wouldn't mind playing as a Tevinter Mage, that would pretty interesting since magic is used freely there... btw what country is Tevinter supposed to be?

Anybody know where Tevinter is inspired by? I'm clueless. Think of the most evil place in the world... (my guess is South Dakota)

Playing as a Tevinter mage could be super fun. So far we haven't really experienced any mages that don't have the residual guilt that comes from being under Chantry influence - mages that are proud, instead of ashamed of their magic. I'd love the chance to learn more about the culture and be, or hang out with a Tevinter mage that doesn't feel like using magic is taboo. I was in awe of Morrigan for this very reason. Unapologetically powerful. So secure that she wasn't even interested in Chantry politics.

It might be just as cool to play as a character from Tevinter that escaped slavery. Not in the sense that Fenris did, but as a slave who was one of hundreds and whose life was considered of virtually zero value. Could be up to the player whether their character is angry with mages, in awe of mages, or just so happy to be free that he/she never wants to think about them again but has to because of the central conflict.

Another group I'm curious about are the "hedge mages" - apostates who for whatever reason aren't really under Chantry influence and don't even really have Templars hunting them because they're so obscure (kind of like Flemeth and Morrigan). David Gaider said in "Asunder" that since they have no formal mage training, their magical abilities manifest themselves in unconventional ways (like shapeshifting). Could make for some cool new specializations - I'm already quite tired of the old ones.

Does the Black Divine have an order similar to the Chantry's Seekers? If so, one of those could come in handy. They'd obviously want to investigate.
