I have not played an archer Warden for ages, so I thought I would give that another try. And so far so good (I'm at Redcliffe for the first time), but I am having all kinds of trouble with Leliana not following what her tactics menu says she should do. Which is to be an archer. She keeps switching to melee weapons, even though I have her set up to be second archer.
Why is this happening?
I have played an archer Warden before and I don't recall having this problem. I sort of had an idea of playing the dual archer theme all the way through, but I am slowly growing tired of continually having to manually command Leliana to use the bow.
Anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be? I suppose it is still early enough in the game that I can simply build Leliana as a DW and forget about the twin archer theme, but it sort of has me perplexed.
two archers: why does Leliana keep switching to melee?

Did you take her other set of weapons away?

Under tactics her stance is "Ranged". Ranged means they will switch to melee weapons when an enemy closes in but prefer ranged weapons.

She has both ranged and melee weapons. She has learned the "Melee Archer" talent. The tactics menu was set "Ranged," with my own custom set of archer tactics. But even when the enemy was at a distance, she was switching to melee and running up to engage the foe.
Maybe it is some sort of weird glitch that happens when the main character Warden is played as an archer -- although, as I said, I don't recall this happening in an earlier playthrough.
I sort of gave up and decided to build Leliana as a DW melee fighter this game.

Probably, does not matter anymore to the topicstarter, but I recently had same issues with her. I'm archer rogue (bard). And my initial idea was to build 2 ranged +2 melee party (which was Alistair, dog, her and me). I regreted that I changed Morrigan for her to do Redcliff very soon, because she did switch to melee in each combat.
It's not about tactics management - in the very beginning I used one of knights as second ranged as well, and he kept his longbow no matter what. Same for my char - when not controlled, she keeps close range bow firing, and she has same tactics preset. So, there is something wrong about Leliana's behaviour.

Yeah, I finished that playthrough a while ago. I think there must be some glitch that happens randomly to Leliana when the main character is set to play ranged/archer.
I guess the good news is that Leliana can be built into a pretty strong DW melee fighter, which is what I ended up doing with her back in that playthrough. But it is sort of odd that a character will not follow the tactics the player sets in the tactics menu.

With Leliana, I prefer to keep her as an archer, and will remove her melee weapons so that she has no choice but to use her bow.
The only time that I've noticed her going into melee range to engage the enemy is sometimes when using dirty fighting when attacked by a melee attack. I no longer keep dirty fighting, or any talents that involve being in melee range in her tactics. I just have her use health poultices and archery talents.
Perhaps this issue is only for archer wardens? I haven't noticed any issues when playing as mage. I also keep Leliana on passive behavior and to attack the same target as my character.

Her default tactics has her switch. Did you change the tactics to be all ranged attack options.

set the tactic like this
when attacked with melee attack ---> dirty fighting
not
when attacked with melee attack ---> switch to melee weapon
this will solve your problem

tactics are set ok, she had same preset as warrior-knight, whom I gave longbow in the very beginnig, and same preset that stands for my rogue\\archer\\bard warden while I'm on some other char. She was the only one who switched to melee among three mentioned. Dirty fighting does not require weapon switch, by the way.
And I'm ok with my Wynne+Alistair+dog combo. But I may swap dog for another mele, probably.
