I've played the ME series since the beginning & ME1 was one of the primary reasons I purchased my xbox 360 years ago. I wanted to share some random thoughts on ME3. Some are controversial but I've tried to remain respectful in tone. Please try to follow suit if you respond, even if you disagree strongly, as you can't coerce anyone into your own views anyhow, just simply share them.
I rank them overall, from most liked to less liked as: ME1, ME3, ME2. They were all enjoyable in their own way but I felt ME1 had the best & most epic story & best RPG experience. The ME2/ME3 parts of the franchise were tuned more for shooter crowd, but still good fun & enjoyable but less so for me personally.
I felt ME3 had some genuinely poignant moments along with better gameplay tuning than ME2 so hence it was ranked higher than ME2 in my mind. Well-done in many ways but for some reason, ME1 still resonated with me more. In fact, I think ME1 is the one game of the series that stands on it's own the best. I must admit that despite my initial reservations I really enjoyed the ME3 Multi-player, which was really quite fun.
One thing I found strange in ME3 was in spite of the fact that homosexual relationships have always been supported (assuming one counts asari as a "female" in human terms), ME3 amped it up noticably. It was amusing to see 2 butch women guarding a door, 2 women having various sargeant/private military discussions, along with the equipment guy jumping right into his lost male lover story, etc.... This was distinctively more pronounced emphasis on homosexual gender & sexuality roles than had occurred in previous games. It's as if gender/sexuality roles had some cataclysmic event occur between ME1 & ME3 to cause such a change in the ME universe (ME2 was more than ME1 but less than ME3 so in the middle transitionally). Of course, that insinuation & the absurdity of it may have been part of the intended point, doubtful I'll every know. Whether that change was contributory to the game or more of a agenda-based addition is a matter of opinion but I don't think it added a significant contribution of genuinely intrigueing or interesting content beyond what was available in ME1. It was hard to miss imo although I was never quite sure if the goal was to challenge sexuality stereotypes or enforce them, challenge gender roles or enforce them, etc.... One can never tell due to mix of both genuinely emotionally-moving presentation (the equipment manager) & the mostly silly presentations (2 butch girls guarding a door with mind-numbingly boring quips offered between them, 2 female military personnel talking with the sound & gruff of a male voice, etc...). Perhaps it was meant to do both simultaneously (seems the most likely scenario based on the data).
I also found Shepard was a bit of a flirt with everyone in ME3 initially until you made some neutral or relationship-cooling choice. This seemed out of character with the series as a whole & undermined the genuineness of Shepard's affections for a single person imo (if that was your style). In my case, I had always been faithful to Liara so I would have preferred a better job of interpreting the prior ME1/ME2 choices in regards to Shepard's behavior in ME3 before speaking to Liara. Clearly my Shepard would only have eyes for Liara & would never pursue another relationship until I had pursued Liara first & determined if she was interested or not. This would seem a much more believable approach for Shepard, not to mention any of my crew who had prior exposure to me & knew I was in a long-standing relationship w/Liara. So it made the whole romance thing imo seemed cheap & shallow & the whole way gender roles & sexuality was dealt with seemed less sincere & genuine imo. The whole overtones of more overt sexuality (both hetero & ******) along with gender role reversal felt like slapped-on EA-motivated content in my view, certainly not core game content in any case.
In my view, I found the tone of more overt sexuality overall not to my liking for ME3 & ended up only renting ME3 vs. buying it as I had for ME1/ME2 (Over 400+ hours in both games). I still consider ME1 the best of the series & the example of a deft touch when it comes to sexuality & gender issues. This seemed more genuine, realistic, & appealing in my view. Additionally, ME1 the story arc was epic on it's own merits & I enjoedy the tweaking aspects of powers & equipment a bit more although ME3 did strick a nice balance here imo, better than ME2 did.
In my mind, ME3 changed this deft social dynamic formula to something measurably more overt & shallow (at times) in style. To the Bioware development team, I didn't consider this change an improvement in my own personal gaming experience relative to ME1/ME2 with respect to this specific aspect. With regards to gameplay/RPG tweaking, I found ME3 was an improvement over ME2. The inventory system of ME2/ME3 were both vast improvements over ME1 (my only strong criticism of ME1, I liked the Mako myself). I'm just one Bioware fan but that's my $0.02 anyhow.
thanks & best regards,
