I was listening to Prokofiev here and it got me thinking - there's much classical music that fits perfectly to games, but renowned classical music isn't used anywhere, the Civilization series aside. I'm not an expert on copyright, but doesn't it hold that after 70 years of the artist's death one can freely use his intellectual property? + using the contemporaries' music shouldn't be so costy.
classical music has many gems that are quite hidden from the public, and would work wonders in games - so there has to be a reason why there no usage of old-times' classical composers' works.

Yes, I believe so. His grandchildren have enough benefits of their artist grandpa!
I like What 'Paradox Plaza' did with 'Hearts of Iron', 'Europa Universalis II' and 'Victoria'. Also Civilization IV and V and Colonization have great pieces.
For example Victoria introduced me with 'Hector Berlioz' and 'Giuseppe Verdi'.
Suffice to say it was Paradox Plaza who introduced me classic Music. I didn't know anything before it except few Mozart and Bach tracks.
I was a fanatic of Star Wars tracks before them

I always liked the music in the Cathedral level in Deus Ex,
very Bach like. Tip: play this late at night
Frontier Elite II also had some classic pieces like Hall Of The Mountain King and the Blue Danube

One could freely use his intellectual property, but the property itself is just sheet music for the orchestra, isn't it? You'd still have to pay the orchestra.

Well, paying the orchestra to play and record the classic pieces for the Game itself or Buying the license from Naxos, EMI etc. do the work well.
