Why isn't Baldur's Gate freeware?

So I really want to play Baldur's Gate since my 2nd favourite game of all time, Dragon Age:Origins, is the spiritual succesor to it but I can't find it online anywhere. I've tried to torrent it but most of them don't work or are virus filled. I'm pretty sure it's impossible to find the game in stores or anything so it would probably be impossible to obtain unless I risked trusting eBay deals.

Why couldn't BioWare make old games like these freeware? Bethesda made the first two Elder Scrolls free so I don't see why BioWare couldn't.

EDIT: Wait I think Baldur's Gate belongs to a different company..if so, then that company should've made it freeware LOL.

Read these forums, there is something called GOG?
It won't be freeware because they are releasing an Enhanced Edition soon.

GoG has bg1  & bg2 for $10 each gives you the game including official expansions and is fully patched... bargain!

First of all Bioware has no rights to BG series anymore. Second BG series still sells well so no point in making it freeware.

Why would it be Freeware? It still makes tons of sales. I honestly can't see Baldur's Gate becoming Freeware in the next 40 years, never mind decade.

Agreed. I just spent $20 at Gog.com to get permanent easy access to clean installs, and I already own all the disks! (Which I don't have to mess with any more! Yay!)

There is still lots of money to be made out of the BG franchise.

It isn't freeware because it belongs to Wizards of the Coasts/TSR now I think? Or maybe Atari/Infogrames?

As others have said, you can get both BG1 and BG2 for 20 US dollars at gog.com, fully updated, fully patched and gog.com makes sure they'll work on winx xp, win 7, and probably also win 8. On top of that an Enhanced Edition comes this summer for the iPad and for the pc as well...

Same as what everyone else said: Why would a clearly popular game that is still selling at an affordable, and quite frankly a steal price because it is awesome, be freeware?

Also if you want discs, you can buy them on Amazon VERY cheaply.
