This has been a question I've wondered since Mass Effect 1. I know its just a game, but I love it. It is the only game I've ever really played multiple times out of enjoyment. I originally didn't really care for some of the characters, but I've grown to love all of them,
especially [/b]Liara and Garrus. I've played with both Ashley alive and with Kaidan alive.

So, here is my question:

How do the other races/species of mass effect stay hidden from the Humans for so long while in the same galaxy? I do understand that the Charon relay wasn't opened yet, so there would be no real way of communicating before the Humans opened the relay. Feel free to give out any ideas, I would love to hear some ideas for this.

The galaxy is huge, and there are vast sections of unexplored space between the relays..Humans, prior to Mass Effect technology have absolutely no way to catch any glimpse or sign of alien activity in the huge expanse of space...basically, you just answered your own question.

You answered your own question. What more is there to say, apart from the obvious? The galaxy is a big place, etc, etc.
