I am an unabashed blue baby supporter. To be clear, however, the whole blue baby thing is more a symbol for the happy ending I'd like to have as an option for my Shepard; I don't literally want to see blue babies added into the game, as adorable as that might be.

Not sure if my thoughts on the matter are really what the OP is after though, since I'm not a guy. (I'm also not sure why the idea that there may be players out there who enjoy the game differently than you do is so surprising or worth being "bothered" by, but...*shrugs*)

I think my questions are pretty specific to this game, but way to generalize and not answer most of my questions while having a condensending and toolish tone. Sorry, I don't frequent forums as much as you and have this discussion whenever there is a choice between male and female. I have not seen this topic come up in this section, nor have I ever participated in one relating to another game. We all seem to be having a productive adult conversation here except for your 10 year old defensive response.

The question is not specific to this game. Every game which allows you to choose between male and female eventually gets several threads with people asking about this. Usually it takes form of something like: "Why a guy would want to play a girl? Are you gay lol?" Perhaps your intention was different and if I read it wrong then I apologize. But one thing already typed in the opening of your OP set me of. You say "I've come to find a trend that I really can't comprehend". Really, a mature individual cant comprehend why someone selects a different gender in a video game? That honestly sounds a bit closeminded and for me also a bit like a flame-bait seeing how often this topic boomerangs around multiple boards. By this logic noone should ever play an Orc in Warcraft or Dwarf in Dragon Age.

I like to play female characters, specifically female characters who are strong and independent. I think it's because the big male hero archetype is just so boring and overdone imo.

As a guy, I have problem viewing the world from femsheps shoes, playing as her brings a new and interesting approach to problems that are typically handled by males. It just feels fresh.

I think anyone who can't play female characters is either immature, or insecure about their own masculinity. Just my opinion.

Good points, but I think there is more to guys who don't play female characters besides your generalizations of insecurities. Mainly, because of my original explanation that I consider Shepard to be me. So I cant really get into a FemShep because she can't be me. Because I have a penis.:P

But it seems like people are able to just observe the character while chosing their paths without "being" that character.

I wouldn't want to see blue babies in the game. I think that'd be over the top. But, maybe just a still image even of Shep and Liara in that park that she mentions living close to. With her being pregnant? I would love that.

My OP's main theme was not soley "why do guys pick female characters". Stop being so narrow minded and selectively chosing what you want to read.

All good comments so far, but the blue baby supporters are quiet! I need explanations straight from the source!

Because generally, players cared about the characters. That's what Bioware accomplishes so well. The player is immersed, and wants to see the relationship between the characters play out the way they were teased with. It's natural to want to see characters you like, or real people for that matter, to have happiness. Then other players just wanna die and don't give a rip about any of that.

I read your entire OP and I reply only to points which triggers my emotional response. Since I play a Femshep that was something that I can relate to. I dont react on blue babies theme becouse that is not something that concerns me. But since we are dragging this subject, I dont have problems "understanding" why someone cares about blue babies. People are different. You are in shock that someone cries about a blue baby fanart? You would not. I would not. But some people love Justin Bieber. It is not my right to judge them for this.

Hehe. We are all mixtures of feminine and masculine traits! You may find a good deal of how you feel is better reflected through the experiences aloted to a female character! On the same hand, you might find some of your attitudes are repressed by being a female, and what an enlightening experience that could be!

I identify with male Shepard, so that's who I always used. Using a female character, especially in a game like ME, shatters my suspension of disbelief.

I tried playing as a female Shepard in ME2 and shut it off after 5 minutes. I would have rather rammed my head through a concrete wall than listen to Jennifer Hale speak for five more seconds. Her voice was far too gravelly (sounds like it's on purpose, which it probably is). I'll admit that Meer was bad in some of ME and improved in ME2 ,but I thought Mark Meer absolutely killed it in Mass Effect 3.

I think some of the guys who play as female Shepard and either sexual deviants who just want their lesbian romances or are men who loves role playing as women, and I don't know which I find worse.

I'm very meh about this whole thread. Play as a male shep, play as a female shep, have a straight romance, have a gay romance, whatever yo. At the end of the day, does what you do in game affect how you live your personal life? If the answer is yes, perhaps there are feelings you've had deep inside but didn't acknowledge, and the stimulus of something different brought it out. If no, then enjoy experiencing something in a bubble which you wouldn'tnormally get to and take that experience and learn and grow from it.

Headcanon. ;)

This isn't exactly new. Look at... well, let's just say Golden Axe. How many people played as the blonde female barbarian? *raises hand* Don't be shy. I won't judge you. :P

Love femshep.
I adopted her as a male gamer because I'm always curious how another VA sounds.
I took to Hale immediately. Meer's okay, but Hale just works better for me.
But I play both every game, just as I do paragon/renegade.

One difference is that I never play a game as "me". If it were me, I'd never play, because IRL I don't like getting shot at. I think of myself as a "director" of my characters to the extent possible. In linear games, I'm a passenger and the character is my taxi.

You really like taking things out of context and twisting them into whatever works for you don't you?

I'm not in shock, I just don't get the obsession and fascination so I asked several questions that covered a  variation of themes/topics within the game and members. Which, of these you took one sentence and desparately tried to flame me for and then admitted you ignored the rest of my post because you didn't care about the other things. Now you are trying to say I'm judging others which I am not. I am simply asking questions to clarify people's emotions and thoughts.

Since you've already had this "pathetic" discussion several times and have nothing to add, why not just move along?

Well, why do I play a female anything? Because the option's actually present for once. But I've played plenty of games as males, and almost tried to play ME1 as male, but Mark... has improved his delivery over the games, I've seen on Youtube. But it was so painful that I couldn't get past Eden Prime. (My second attempt at the game ever. My first was Jayla Shepard, my third, the original incarnation of Alyna, my canon playthrough.)

The thing is, the closer a character is to either me or my MarySue self (named Jayla Clark in my head, natch, and I do a good impression of her in Second Life :P), the more attached I am to it. This hit its peak, possibly, in Dragon Age 2, where the climax hit, and I was stabbed in the heart by it. As someone else was shortly thereafter, in the game... but with Liara? Alyna's so perfect a being in my eyes that I almost flip the roles and imagine myself as Liara in the game.

I don't know what it is about the little blue babies, though. I think it really is a symbol of the promise made and denied. From Shepard to Liara, and from Bioware to us. Our Shepards deserve happy endings, for frak's sake, they've built no less than seven snowmen in the Sahara, they've earned it...

(And any guy who legitimately sniffed at the pictures of blue babies, gains twenty masculinity points. I've decided this. Real men aren't afraid to cry.)

I play both because the option is available to me, there is also unique dialogue, a good example is the dialogue with Eve in the medical bay, I especially don't see the need to limit myself in a single player game, it's a personal experience.

Six classes, do half of them as either gender for balance, mostly. Want to see all I can. And I'd be wasting my time not try the romances, so eh.
I tend to only really get into the game as me for one character, you know, my main, and that one IS a dude. The others are to explore what I've been given.

The Obsession with Blue babies really is just flying over my head.

I thought it was an awkward line in LotSB, i still think it is

The only reason i had to care was my curiosity on what it would be like when
Shepard daughter(s) one day become powerful/influential Asari Matriarch(s)

Fudge that, my FemShep can carry Kaidan; she can carry you. (Or can I use my maleShep for that?)
Yay, got myself a new @Mavaras.

Dawson14 wrote...

In your opinion  you don't like playing as the character and therefore don't see yourself as the character. HOWEVER, I DO and so do others. I am not saying that everyone should play their own gender or demanding anything of that nature. I was simply asking questions to as why people do. That's it.

So maybe you should pimp slap yourself for your lack of reading comprehension{smilie}{smilie}. But you do bring up an example to as why people like to play other genders, etc and how you can immerse yourself into that person. So thanks for that.

But still RPG's are supposed to be YOU role playing right? It's YOUR character that you chose to make. So do people not consider Mass Effect and RPG? Besides the ending, your choices do matter so I would consider it a form of an RPG.

You misunderstand me then. I never said that I don't like playing as the character. In fact, I said the opposite. I know I'm not the character, and that's why I enjoy playing the character. Even in RPGs, character creation is very limited in games right now so it's difficult to create a character that looks, acts, and thinks exactly like I do.

Now you've opened up a thread where GuysWhoPlayMaleShep are calling GuysWhoPlayFemShep "sexual deviants" and GuysWhoPlayFemShep are calling GuysWhoPlayMaleShep "immature." So you get another *PIMP SLAP* for that.

Now about the blue babies. Most people (including EDI) think that the goal of organic life is to reproduce. If you're immersed into your character and you want to reproduce, why shouldn't your character have blue babies? Did you feel anything as SPOILER ALERT--Mordin or Thane or Legion--died? Then how is that different from feeling something when someone else draws a blue asari baby? They're all made up. We're human and can form emotional attachments to made up characters. That's why Hollywood is one of the biggest industries in America.

And what @JaylaClark said about "blue babies = BioWare's promises."

I'm a male and I have played ME with both male and female Shepards. It's a different experience for sure. A lot of the reasons you see a ton of lesbian romances for femshep is because of the awful job that Bioware did with straight femshep romances. For example I have a playthrough where I wanted to keep femshep available until the third game. In ME1, it's damn near impossible to not get ninjamanced by Liara. The only guaranteed solution I've found is to romance Kaidan and then kill him on Virmire. OK through ME1 with no romance. ME 2 is simple enough don't romance anyone. Then you're onto ME3. Well Kaidan is dead and Garrus, Thane and Jacob are all unromanceable if you didn't carry it over. There's no male characters left for femshep to romance. And you're stuck in the same situation if you romanced Jacob or Thane as well. Thane dies and Jacob cheats on you. So if you have this kind of playthrough and you want the paramour achievement in ME3, you have to go lesbian. There are no other options.
