So....I've been enjoying the game and it's safe to say that Isabela is my favourite character, she's my resident lockpicker, she's cute and she has all the best lines in the game.

Cue end of chapter 2, she leves and comes back and the only way for me to get her is by beating the insanely strong Arishok and his men..... UNFAIR!
Afer numerous attempts and having to sit through that damn story board each time I'm now having to lower the difficulty just so I can keep my favourite character.

You also can duel him one on one if you have the Arishok's respect or if Fenris is in your party. Though to some that option is a lot harder.

Yeah, I tried that first time - that's insanity.
Although, in true Shinrahunter fashion I gave it one more go straight after posting and beat him lol.
It's the first battle in either game where I've actually had to micro manage my characters throughout the whole battle.

I had Warrior Hawke (reaver/templar), Anders, Merrill & Avaline.
Whew.... glad that's over, I really didn't wanna lose Isabela, she's the star of the game lol

About to play DA2 again for the first time in many months so I am going by sketchy memory here.

I always take the duel option and from what I remember he is pretty easy to just kite around.

I haven't fought the Arishok in so long. One, because it's been a long time since I played the game. Two, I always hand Isabela over to him. I don't like her and I think she needs to own up to what she did.(But that's another topic.)

I really dislike Isabela. And once she dropped a line about herself smelling funny or needing a bath, that was it :/ But yeah that was one epic fight. If I recall well, I beat the Arishok one on one as a Mage and lots of potions.

First time I fought the Arishoke I got my roguish butt kicked. Second time...same thing. Eventually lowered the difficulty, which helped a little. The next time I did a play through I used an archer-rogue. Believe it or not I cleaned house. As a rogue two usefull skills to have is pinning shot and explosive shot. Not sure how this advice translates to warriors or mages, but I figured I'd share. He's very tough to go against head-to-head.

Well maybe it is just me, but I fought the Arishok one on
one and he was so damn easy.  I played
the game once as a Rogue and cannot recall my fight with him; plus I did not
care for the class. I switched to playing a mage on my other games and I breeze
right through the Arishok fight. I drink maybe one or two mana potions and if I
am being sloppy a health potion.

Seriously, though as mage he is so easy to win against, it
was almost sad.

First time I dueled him I got beaten down so damn easily. He kept picking up Hawke and throwing her around like a ragdoll - not fun. The Wiki has a really good strategy page for beating him though. It does mainly involve evasion but it's very easily done once you know how.

Mage Hawke duelled the arishock. It went a lot like this:

Most frustrating battle I've ever experienced in any game. But eh, she won. That's something, right?

My rogue Hawke dueled one on one. She had assassinate and the dual weapons tree. Fight did not take that long compared to my warrior and mage Hawke.

Rogue hawke has the best time of it in my opinion as you have several abilities geared towards killing high level enemies. Also, if you have the mabari summon ability he works wonders as a distraction.

He needn't be so difficult - it depends on the class, I think. The battle was a cakewalk when I played as a rogue, though it might have been a glitch. I used the shadow ability called decoy and shot arrows at him from afar while he charged at my doppelganger - and after he destroyed it, he just remained frozen on the spot until I killed him. Sort of anticlimactic, that.
The battle was a lot more painful on the next playthrough where I rolled warrior. I felt so full of gusto and then within seconds Hawke's lifebar was reduced to a third. Cue half an hour of me running and screaming and crying for my dog.

Doesn't always just depend on the class. Certain types of mages will find him more difficult, the same with certain types of Rogues. I played one with only Backstab and ability choices geared towards support and increasing the lethality of her regular attacks. It was a tough fight. Evade, Backstab and Miasmic Flask were vital, and extremely good timing was a requisite.

I wasn't expecting the one-on-one duel, my character was much more a group-oriented character. But roleplaying, I couldn't do anything but accept the fight. At least in DA:O I had the option of using Sten against Loghain.

No, insanity was fighting him solo as a mage with the slow mo bug. Thank the Maker for Dog!

Whaaaat?!  As a warrior or rogue it's simply step to his side, hit him 3 times.  He turns, step to his other side, hit him 3 times.  If you have a stun you can get 5 hits in.

Any gamer should be able to figure out that pattern - it's a simple, "Get out of the way."

The only blow you have to take from him is the impale.

I've never fought him as a mage . . . but I have to believe that is even easier as you can mantain distance as use the 4 pillars in the room as a shield.

edit:  I apologize as I know I'm coming off as an elitist jerk - but as this game is over 6 months old I'm just very suprised that someone is complaining about ANY of the fights in regular DA2.  I found only the DLC boss fights to be challenging.

Depends on which class you have :P

I used my 'stealth+back stab' rogue (the build with the insane crit bonuses) and I didn't break a sweat, he went down pretty quick.

I used Wynne against Logain, just for giggles

Warrior hawk is definitively the hardest against arishok. Mage hawk can control him with ice and horror, rogue hawk can assassinate to drop him quick.

Really? i'm not fond of Isabella either... but the Arishok is one of the most mentally disturbed psychopaths in DA2... he kills innocent and unarmored combatants for a book, of which they (if they had even an average IQ) would have several copies of in his home country.

I will never be able to understand the Qun. The logic behind their actions mirror that of insane religious fanatics.

Your choices were:
(A) Pay attention and put out a little effort
(B) Lower the difficulty if you wanted to faceroll

Those evil Bioware bastards... How unfair of them!

Against the Arishok, do the party battle and have a ranged party stand by the door while Aveline fights a bit closer to the stairs. When the Sarebaas' are in range, focus fire and take them out. Then, you should be able to take the other Qunari out one by one and deal with the Arishok after you've had the chance to loot the corpses.

You have to go through the Arishok to complete Act 2, so the battle isn't just about Isabela. Not once have I ever handed her over.

The Qun goes like this: follow the Qun, unless it suits those of the Qun's purposes not to follow the Qun.  Conquer everything that moves or plan to conquer everything that moves.  Fits of rage and self indulgence.

Oversimplified, I know - but that's what I've seen throughout the game.

Only Tallis admits that being Qunari is like being an alcoholic - she tries to follow it, falls off the wagon, but then gets right back on before she loses her "sobriety" aka "Qun-iety".

But she's not even Kossith. Avaraaad . . . goes banans. The Arishok . . . goes bananas!

I take that back - Sten does a pretty good job of trying to follow the Qun, going so far as to sentence himself to death by starvation then death by darkspawn.  But that is a result of "Sten goes Bananas."  Better if he just kept his composure.

But on topic - solo duel - sword n board (lowest damage) character vs Arishok and I kicked his ass Charlie's Angels style - not one potion swallowed.
