I fought this guy one on one as a rogue and damn, it was tough. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it. Luckily, I had assassinate (assassin specialization rules), so I just spammed that, twin fangs, and backstab (which is the best way to avoid his swings, which knocks Hawke flat on her back; that was the worst, since he already had another blow waiting for me by the time I got up again).
I found a trick: there's a whole bunch of pillars around the room. Run in circles around them until he halts, giving you a second or two advantage - then use assassinate or twin fangs. Before he gets ready to wind up and smack you, backstab. You can probably get a few melee hits in here, too. Then run like hell to wait for cooldown, both for potions, if you need them, and skills. Boom! Wash, rinse, repeat.
As long as you stay out of his reach and don't get smoked, you'll be fine. The trickiest part is being able to get away after he's already hit you. Man, that was irritating.
WHY???? Bioware?, Why have you done this?

Arishok battle? Hard? I got to duel him, Male Mage vs him 1v1. I demolished him. His charge trick works the same as any ogre, and the synergy of Ice Blast, Stonefist, and Crushing Prison, matched up with the curse Torment tears apart bosses. Stick and move is all.

The only way you can defeat the Arishok is by making sure you have completed all quests including side quests etc. They give you extra XP and coins that allow you to purchase new and stronger equipment and upgrade your skills. I think Bioware have done an awesome job and hopefully it's safe to say that they are my favourite games developers/company in all time, their games are over outstanding, including quality, and their interactions with their fans on here is amazing imo. Bioware please DO NOT change, only change for the better.

Arishok was hardly that much of a challenge. I had the most trouble fighting him with the Rogue, since Rogues rely mostly on continuous DPS to make any real impact, and when you have an enemy that hits you with an attack that knocks you on your ass every time...well it doesn't work out very well.
But even on Hard mode, my Mage completely shat on the Arishok. Just launch everything you have at him, run away from his charge, fire away with your auto attack, run away from his charge, launch everything you have at him again, rinse and repeat. Same with my Warrior. I actually had enough HP and Fortitude to soak up his attacks and just whale on him repeatedly.

I am playing through the game again as a rogue, so I read all the comments to get some tips on how to beat Arishok with my rogue. Everyone's advice here is very helpful. In my opinion, he's the most difficult boss to kill in the entire game. I beat him once with a warrior, but it took a really, really long time. I won't give Isabela up if she comes back either. She comes back because of Hawke, and because she has a change of heart. She can be a really good friend if given a chance.

Now we know why the Chantry/Templars think mages are dangerous, yes? You'll notice they're not trying to lock up rogues and warrior types.ProjectCaddyGuy wrote...

It wasn't a hard fight for me but i most definitely a long fight, especially since i was on hard with an entropy mage, which doesn't deliver the best damage, on fighter i had to get in a few hits and then move back to avoid getting hit and as a rogue it was pretty nice since i just used assassin skill which took him out quite quickly

The fight isn't hard, it's just drawn out

The trick to the Arishok battle is to RUN IN CIRCLES around the room. This is why it's so big. Run run run, attack attack run run run attack ;p
It's particularly obnoxious/fun on a mage because of how squishy they can be ;p

The first time i dueled the Arishok he swooped my ass (and swooping is bad) Because this is 1 of the harder fights (i was a mage) after actually reading what some of my spells did i managed to kill him easily with entropy spells, so easy it wasn't even funny. (Use the dog this helps also). As a S&B warrior it wasn't that hard really. Rogue was REALLY easy with that 'clone->stealth' thing.
If you use 'space bar' alot during the fight it becomes so easy it aint even funny, it's harder to go 'non spacebar' really. Managed it a couple of times but it's pretty stress full

Best way I fight Arishok as a mage is to keep my distance and pound him with spells.
