That is what basically gave him no chance after he killed the Ogre he left his weapons sticking in its corpse and ran to the king. If he was such a great warrior he never would have done that, I mean come on even a recruit would know that if you lost your weapons on the field of battle you would be done. For a seasoned warrior like Duncan sheathing his weapons would be almost instinct or he would have died a long time ago from the same mistake. Sure he probably would have died anyway, he was badly injured at that point, but with out his weapons he had no chance at all.

Somewhere out there a very unlucky soldier is fighting off darkspawn with his dinner fork.

He was in dual shocked states. 1) Loghain didn't show as promised. And the king was dead leading to extreme mental shock. 2) he himself was about three breaths from death due to physical shock anyway...

First and foremost: The battle was lost. He despaired, when he saw that the King died and the reinforcements wouldnt apear. The darkspawn have overrun them. At the end of the scene you can see how the last survivors are slaughtered down.

Second: Did you really see him die? I mean like Cailan?Me just saw the screen become black before the Alpha reached him ;)

Im pretty sure he knew his time was up when the king died.

I wouldn't prolong the inevitable by fighting more darkspawn, tis more manly to cuddle a dead king than fight, no?

MAJORLY MINOR NITPICK: the screen turns WHITE before the Alpha reaches him :D Which is even more fuel for the Duncan Lives conspiracy theory, surely it would have gone BLACK if he were dead lol...

...also, if you remember from thev opening cutscene, Duncan does not need weapons to punk Darkspawn. He'll just use theirs against them.

ALSO: pretty sure he knew he was f__'d by that point.

The ogre attacks Duncan first, mortally wounding him before killing the King. Duncan spends his last resources taking vengeance out on the ogre. After that there isn't much energy left in him.

Well just before the black screen there is a bright white flash and I assumed that was the maker accepting Duncan's noble soul to its rightful place in the afterlife.  Posted Image

If Duncan was a mage he could have killed the darkspawn himself.

Thing is though me and my party have been in many many battles where I have assumed I am f__'d but I still manage to make it through. There is no way I would leave my weapon unless I saw a better one to pick up maybe he wanted the Kings sword! lol

I believe that Duncan was already dying when he ran over Cailan. Honestly, it looked like Duncan was pretty much done for and that seeing Cailan die served as an emotional catalyst for him. It gave Duncan the strength to kill that ogre, and then he was just...done afterwards. It was no mistake on Duncan's part. Obviously, the man didn't survive as a Warden for 10-20-however many years by being an idiot. Clearly, it's a little different fighting a tough battle that you know you can win and a situation where you're mortally wounded and pretty much done for with no hope whatsoever of a victory. If you watch the cinematic, you'll see that he looks up at the Tower of Ishal and sees the signal fire. He knows that Loghain has betrayed them at the point. Anyway, what exactly is a dying man supposed to do, hold on to his weapons for use in the afterlife? I think he knew it was over.

Like Ulrik mentioned, Duncan was seriously wounded when the Ogre hit him and the effort that went into killing the Ogre just over did him. So I can understand him leaving his weapons to stagger to Cailan.

Also, no one knows what happened to Duncan at Ostagar. In the game your PC and Alistair assume that he died, but Wynne survived the battle and it is possible that Duncan also survived but we just don't know.

Aye! perhaps he will return as a darkspawn general in DA 2

He was critically injured/exhausted at the time. The only thing that allowed him to slaughter the Ogre, was a last-gasp of adrenaline.

That or he struck bone.

In Return to Ostagar we'll find out Duncan is not only alive, he's been turned into a broodmother.
You see Duncan had a secret..

Although extremely interesting, not to mention humourous, I regretably doubt that that will be the case. :(

However I would be satisfied with finding Duncan's possibly mutilated corpse, weep quietly for several minutes then steal his pretty armour, skipping away happily as Alistair looks on disgusted. I expect too much don't I....? <_<

I wonder why Duncan would leave his weapons behind at all. Sure the King has just been brutally slaughtered, but no Grey Warden would leave their weapons behind and simply give up. After all, aren't all Wardens expected to die killing darkspawn? Be it in the deep roads or on a battlefield I can't see Duncan simply giving up...

He's been turned into the Broodfather; the pimp daddy Darkspawn which travels around the world making sweet, sweet love with the Broodmothers in order to spawn more Darkspawn.

Perhaps, but at that point it didn't seem like he was physically capable of fighting anymore, as though the Ogre wounded him and in killing it he tore the wound wide open.

No need for that even... I mean, his name is Duncan! How many times was Duncan Idaho supposed to be dead?

What do you have against black screens? Screenist!
I still think the darkspawn ate his beard and let him go, banishing him to a world of facial hairlessness. What a terrible life, they should have just killed him!

Oh, and by the way... the battle was lost, the king was dead and Duncan was wounded. His weapons no longer mattered.
