I wonder why Duncan would leave his weapons behind at all. Sure the King has just been brutally slaughtered, but no Grey Warden would leave their weapons behind and simply give up. After all, aren't all Wardens expected to die killing darkspawn? Be it in the deep roads or on a battlefield I can't see Duncan simply giving up...
I kinda figure that was the purpose of the scene: it was intended to drive home the point that this is not a light-hearted or optomistic fantasy. Supported both by Cailin (one of the game's most optomistic and borderline fanboyish characters, overflowing with staunch faith in heroic fantasy tropes) being killed, and by the fact that Duncan (one of the most awesomely epic characters in the game), in the face of the overwhelming failure of the battle, fell into utter and complete despair, and surrendered to death.
The scene is trying to tell you "sometimes, you're just screwed, and even the grey wardens are ultimately frail and mortal."
The fact that the rest of the game seems to be trying to tell you "oh, wait, nevermind. Sometimes, other people are just screwed, you're always awesome..." kinda damages this intention, but still.
