Your past accomplishments, especially those that are great will always be the measure by which you future efforts will be judged. Even if we completely shelf that the whole "your choices matter" not being true because no matter what combination of choices you make throughout all three games you'll still get essentially the same ending, it just doesn't measure up to your potential.
It is not acceptable because you, BioWare, are better than this. I have played almost every game you have made and most of those are among my favorite games of all time. I'm not alone in this, you have a legion of dedicated fans. The main reason the ending upset me because I KNOW it could have easily been better. From our perspective it's just baffling because it's such a mundane ending for such an epic series.
The movies themselves are quite good and well made, and the music is great. I don't think there is any reason to question them based on those traits. However, the circumstances by which they exist from the game's perspective is the problem. Without repeating too much of what has been said countless times, the gargantuan plot holes are what everyone has a problem with. The Star Child nonsense, the stranded fleet over Earth, your squad mates magically being on the Normandy, etc. We all know the litany of plot holes. Also, no real confrontation with Harbinger? That seemed to be the closest thing to a particular villian on an individual basis.
We know you are capable of better writing and story yet this is what we have. That is why the ending shocked me. I cannot fathomhow the people who made everything else in the Mass Effect series decided to cap it off with that, it just didn't make any sense. No answers, no choice, no satisfaction in the completion, and very brief.
The work that exists is well done, but it simply does not fit the spirit ofthe game. I don't believe clinging on to claims of artistic integrity is beneficial to you, because that means you're satisfied with what is unequivally regarded as very bad design.
