Rogues were treated well in this game in my opinion...
Even though most chests do not have spectacular loot, the XP value of lock picking and disabling traps cannot be underestimated
The value of a rogue

I think Rogues are very fun to play, only problem is you cant really be a good rogue until much later.
Its ironic, but my Rogues have the hardest time to invest in social skills. Not that my Warriors would be able to spare more than one point for a long time either. Only Mages, they can basically max this skill until level 9 with little problem at all.

I love my Rogue/Ranger but that is my problem - not enough skill points and ironically they get the most.

Let's not forget they pretty much get the best single-target damage, too.

I didn't have a problem with social skills. I maxed out that and the lockpicking ability on my rogue as early as possible. There's little reason to max out combat training early as there's so much to spread your abilites across. The basic rogue abilites have some excellent choices that I wouldn't be without.
I saw little reason to rush up the weapon abilities tree too quickly - other characters were dealing damage while I was applying debuffs, stunning and talking my way through anything while stealing valuables left and right.
I didn't however bother with pickpocketing - I don't automatically equate rogue with thief and had a much more 'scout' type of character in mind.

my rouge was essentialy a warrior who doesnt like wearing full plate
In the end he was taking down characters the fastest out of all my party full duel wield and duelist with a few assassin abilities thrown in.
I let leliana deal with the locks =P

I enjoy the rogue playstyle more than the other classes. I like to be able to sneak around, assess the enemy, disarm traps, set traps, and kill. I play slow paced but it works best for me.
