Vega. I'm basing this in terms of abilities, he just doesn't any any good skills and I've always spec'd him as a tank in all my playthroughs.

there are no squadmates that are horrible, they all can do something that is really useful, but it mostly depends on what class you play as.

Javik seems to be a bit of a glass cannon for me. He's good offensively but tends to wander himself dead if I'm not micromanaging the squad.

Actually I can think of one. That invisible guy who hands avenger assault rifles and predator pistols for your squad just for the cutscenes. You never talk to that guy. But this one deserves weakest squadmate for contributing nothing except breaking immersion.

if by weak you mean frail, then Liara's got top honours. Half the shield and a quarter of health compared to say ashley or vega. thankfully, her abilities more than make up for it.

Never got Ashley so no opinion about her. Of the rest I'd say Vega, in terms of usefulness he brings little to your team.

No matter how hard I try, Tali spends 80% of combat dead. Which is sad, because her combat drone and energy drain come in handy.

All of them come in handy.

When you need people who are good at shooting you have

Garrus Vakarian
Ashley Williams
James Vega

When you need someone who can take the heat
James Vega
(Possibly Kaidan Alenko depending on how you spec him)

When you need someone who has tech powers
Kaidan Alenko
Tali Zorah
EDI
Garrus Vakarian

When you need biotics:
Liara T'Soni
Comander Javik
Kaidan Alenko

When you need someone to punch
Quarian Admiral Han-Gerrel
Al Jillani
James Vega

EDI is a remarkably good tank, but is not very useful for her powers. She has no cooldown bonuses, so her powers take forever to recharge and never seem to be there when I need them.

Liara and Javik seem to get killed the most. Their powers are nice, but they don't do you any good when they're dead.

EDI is STRONG. Especially when you upgrade passive, and defense matrix to increase tech damage. Coupling her with an engineer is a good idea.. (100% tech damage w/ sabotage..EDI can easily do 2000 damage). However, I found her to be useless with an adept.

For the short amount of time I had ash, she was completely useless. Not only does she miss her shots but...she REALLY doesn't take the opportunity to unload some bullets into people when marksman is activated.

Also, Tali isn't that great. Defense drone is useless - it's a crappier combat drone. Plus, you get her SO late game that you've kind of developed a nice strategy with other characters..also..her abilities don't do outright damage or CC. (Her combat drone does, but it doesn't last long and it's not immediate).

For me, James Vega takes a backseat to every other squadmate the moment I get the chance. His abilities do not seem to mesh very well with any of the classes. I suppose he is decent if you are a Soldier and playing strictly like a shooter.

Tali does not have many uses outside of the Geth missions in my opinion, which is fine by me. Her sabotage is really all you need on those missions anyway.

Ashley is like Garrus without Overload. I guess it depends on what you think about Concussive Shot. She has Disruptor Ammo which can be halfway decent for some bullet crowd control.

Kaidan

Well I have nothing against him, but on the few playthoughs where he's alive I just can't get him to fit with my Shepard, so yeah to me he's easily the least likely to go on missions with Shepard

Tali. Even specced for Drone health, her drones last maybe a second or two on insanity. Which is not nearly long enough.

Which is strange. With the exception of marksmen, ashley has the exact same skillsets as Zaeed in ME2. Which may or may not be a good thing. Good thing is that she has the second highest health and shields, right behind vega.

Aside from that, Garrus, though useful, can also be classified as a glass cannon.

James is probably the worst. His weapon damage bonuses can't touch Garrus or Ashley. He's a good tank, but there's hardly a need for one and if you do need one then you've got EDI with Decoy and Defense Matrix.

Liara dies a lot but her powers are always useful. All of the squadmates are good though. I love EDI/Javik/Ashley the most.

I'd say Ashley. Like all the squadmate choices, she's not terrible, but she doesn't do anything that Garrus or James can't do better. James is a better tank (more health/shields + fortification), and he has carnage. When it comes to weapon damage, Garrus is just as good (if not better), plus he has overload. Ashley just has Marksman, which doesn't seem to do much for her damage output in my experience. All of her other powers are equivalent or slightly inferior versions of those that Garrus and James have.

Overall though, I don't think squadmate choice is nearly as important as it was in ME2, since every ME3 class is generally capable of handling things without relying much on squadmate powers. That's just a general impression though; I'm not sure I'd really defend that statement too vigorously since I haven't thought much about it.

Vega is awesome as a Tank with Explosive Squad Incendiary Ammo. Ammo capacity or Headshot damage is icing on the cake.

Ignore either Carnage or Frag Grenade at first, while focusing only on Fortification, Arms Master and Incendiary Ammo and Vega becomes, very very useful with rapid fire weapons once you have that ammo power in play.

So I'd say every follower has different strengths and weaknesses. And so far I've used Kaidan and Ash the least out of the squad.

I've had the most trouble having to revive Liara, Javik and EDI. And I've been preferring to go with Garrus and Vega most of the time so far as an Adept, Sentinel, Soldier and Engineer.

Ash didn't do well in the transition from ME1 to 3 because the soldier class is trashed now. I don't know people have problems with Javik dying, he seems to do well in my games. I primarily just use Javik with my sentinel...using dark channel to set up biotic booms.

Ashley is actually at her best when combined with a soldier or vanguard.  Rolling two soldiers might sound redundant, but if you equip squad explosive incendiary and give her a Revenant (or particle rifle, but that gun almost feels like cheating), she can rack up an impressive body count.  James has the advantage of having Incendiary ammo on his own, but Ashley has much higher weapon damage boosts.  Combine her with Garrus, and everything just dies.  Just don't give them sniper rifles.  I don't know why, but squadmates are terrible with snipers in this game.
