Actually the whole attack is a lie; Sten massacred all of his warrior-brothers after they stayed up eating all the cake, leaving none for him.
Then, as he was leaving he hit his head on a low archway and fell unconcious, where scavangers stole his sword and his clothes.
The Qunari are supposed to be fierce warriors, right?

Have you seen how fast Sten dies to anything with a bow? Or a mage?
Bottom of the tower steps he also managed to take 196 damage in one hit from something or other, I still have NO idea what the hell happened. ON NORMAL DIFFICULTY.
In Baldur's Gate it was Minsc getting 2-shotted by gibberlings. In Dragon Age it's Sten dying to anything with an activated ability. Seriously. Call me paranoid, but in each game I had to wonder if there was some hidden damage modifier being applied to the damage they were taking.
Oh well... the beresad certainly hit hard, but, like all foreigners from the north, they get crit hard by anything that can. =/

Qunari are worthless. They are ugly, they suck, and their beliefs are stupid.

I concur, then the farmers told them they found more cake amongst the slaughter, but they ate it, so it was Massacre: The Sequel.

I just love how every details of this wonderful game is always pointed out here. Who really "knows" what happenned against Sten and his brothers.

Isn't that kind of the point of the thread? Rampant (and often silly) speculation?

a horde is defined as being quite large so a small horde would be like small moon... ie still massive for a space station that ot when he said small horde he just meant a load of those annoying genlochs

I thought it was implied through pretty much all the contact normal folks and soldiers have with the Darkspawn that they are able to strike with total surprise. Get Wardened up or get munched basically.
I suspect that's one of the reasons why the war dogs are so popular, once they've eaten a couple of darkspawn they are probably able to sense them like wardens, thus acting as an early warning. A small team of foreign warriors, not knowing the ground, knowing little of the threat, without a warden to guide them or a mabari to sniff out the bad guys, would have been at a massive disadvantage.

Well I dont think the Qunari are that amazing really.
The Kadan-Fe mercenaries you fight arent any tougher than other mercs.
But if the darkspawn did get the drop on them, then they would have gotten wiped out fairly quick.
I also find it funny that Alistair says :I can sense darkspawn.
But then dosent give you a heads up anywhere that a bunch of them are about to jump you.

They were just a scouting party, not exactly the vanguard. But I *was* seriously tempted to tell Sten, "You suck" at that point.
Yeah they were the scouting party, but all of they were members of the Beresaad, so I would assume they're a handful of the elite Qunari...
What the other user said about them being all Warriors, a couple of Emissaries or Omegas might have given them some problem...
According to codex read in game, long story short, magic was the secret weapon used by Fereldens against the Qunari invasion 150 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if an Omega would have been enough to rape half the party by itself. Let's not mention what kind of work an Omega, 2 or 3 lesser emissaries, and a great handful of hurlocks could do to a group of 7 magic sensitive Beresaad.

perhaps it was an armored ogre, a few emisaries, and a few alpha hurlok gaurds..
sounds like a group that would give people a rough time.. especially when ambushed in the middle of the night.
