What an absolute useless character introduced at the end of the trilogy and that too in the final chapter. The resources used in adding Major Coates and Diana Allers could have very well be used to have another squad member in the game.

reason they put the effort in to Major Coates is after the announcement trailer everyone was going "who was the guy in Big Ben? we better meet the guy from Big Ben! Big Ben guy for squadmate!"

as for Diana... yeah that was sort of a waste of resources...

Major Coats was pretty useless, and he doesn't even look like the guy from the trailer, but he didn't appear that much to upset me. As for Diana, now THAT' s a waste, she was an awful and badly developed character who had her own room in the Normandy that could've been used to host any other decent character.

Yeah his role isn't all that necessary but I thought it was nice little nod to the fans of the Big Ben trailer. I was very excited when I realized who Coates was; thought it was pretty cool.

I was extremely disappointed that nobody referred to Major Coates as Nigel, or better yet, to have him introduce himself as Nigel Coates. That would have been a nice touch.

I liked him. *shrug*

However, Allers was completely worthless.

Aller is a waste of character. She looks and the voice acting... damn, I can expect better acting in a porn movie.

I like the idea of having a reporter on my ship but Allers was a waste did not mind the role Coates had thought it was ok.

I like him a lot. I just wish he was more present through out the story.
Allers looks like Snooki with a voice that's somewhere between man and frog.

You know what is sad?  I still never knew his name after playing through the game and I had to look it up. I was expecting Major Coates to be apart of the story for more than just the last hour...I mean after advertising him in the game so freaking much...only for him to be in the last 1 hour of a 20-30 hour game...I just didn't care about his character.  LOL, seriously.

Oh god, now I'm gonna want to kick Allers off of my ships/not allow her to join from now on.

I really like Coats even before I knew that he is the BIg Ben sniper. But I do agree that it's not a very good idea to add a character at the last 30 mins of the game.

As for Allers though... the idea of having a reporter on board is cool and all but is it necessary to have Jessica Chobot as the face model? Heck put Emily Wong there or Khalisah. The devs can just piece some random face in the CC and save so much more resources. The character herself though is bland... and the voice acting just makes it worse.

Coates serves a good role in the story by giving us a member of the resistance who has some sort of personality.

he's just a cameo, an Easter egg, i'm sure the "resources wasted" in him would suffice to anything useful anyway

Allers was useless. But Coats was a mother freaking badass of the highest quality. He's what Kaidan should have been

Coats was alright, he was better than just having Anderson and then Alliance grunt 1, Alliance grunt 2, Alliance grunt 3 etc. He represents the bigger picture of the war on earth which Shepard didn't see.

As for Allers, I strongly agree that she was a waste of resources. They gave her a unique, high texture look even though she barely played a role in the game, and her voice acting was poor.

Well, Anderson couldn't organize all this resistance all alone.
He needs a badass Big Ben sniper.

I was honestly one of the few people who saw the trailer and expected him to be recruitable in the game (after all, if he narrates an entire trailer, then he must be an important character in the game... at least that was what I thought at the time).  When I first played the demo, my reaction to the first scene was literally "Okay, there is a person named James (a person I don't know at all) and he and Shepard are talking to each other like they know each other for quite some time.  Why don't I know him when Shepard does?!".  Only when I finish Mass Effect 3 do I discover who Coates was... and I realised that all that time they spent in promoting James Vega as a character to please the fans could have been spent in including Coates in Shepard's team and developing him as a genuine character in the same way that Samara, Thane, Jack, Legion, Mordin (one of my favourite characters), and Grunt have when they were newly introduced characters to the franchise.  I wouldn't give a hateful laugh to Coates just because he's useless to the series; if anything, Coates should be morned for being used as a red herring for long time fan expectations and for ultimately becoming wasted potential to the story.  In my opinion, Coates deserves to rest in peace more than "Marauder Shields" (or "Marauder Health" if you take your time shooting it).

He's likeable enough and serves a purpose if that's all he is. What worries me about him is what he represents, do they want to make a dlc, or worse, a full game (FPS rumor) that takes place on Earth where you use him/he's part of the story. Really don't care for a Mass Effect military shooter. I'm not saying this is going to happen, just my sneaking suspicion.

Shepard's story, yes, anything before or during Shepard's story, don't care, move the series forward, please.
