Hello all,
There have been several players who requested that fog of war be removed from TWA chapter 2. At first I thought this could not be done withotu risking creating bugs, but I have since figured out a simple and apparently safe solution. I have posted a link on the TWA2 page to an alternate game hak which does not include the FOW files. It appears to work in preliminary testing.
Happy wizarding, and sorceror... er.... ing? Anyway, have fun.
Announcement: Fog of War now optional on The Wizard's Apprentice Chapter II

The only real question is - do *you* want the FOW to be an integral part of your campaign? Once you start pandering to the unwashed masses, they'll start requesting all sorts of changes. It potentially threatens your god-like standing as the author of the work.

Sometimes the gods may be kind. It is in the nature of such beings to throw small favours to thier minions in exchange for adoration and exultation.
And the occasional goat ...

Heh- godlike. Good one. I can just see god huddled over his toolset trying to get the scripting right.
"Damn, I cant get the death animation for these gazelles right. Every time the lion kills them, they just keep standing there. "

I read that complaint. I feel that when players don't like a feature, part of the reason is that the builder didn't use the feature to expand the game. Most everything we code is actually a limit on what the players can do, and when players don't feel they'll be rewarded for working with those limits and figuring out how to overcome them, they get frustrated.
For the fog of war, it seems you really need a good maze where the fog makes the experience interesting in a way not possible without it.

The feature worked well in Baldur's Gate and I think it added to the sense of exploration of a wilderness. To me, the Fog of War is often useful for tracking where you (the player) haven't been. Removing it hides some of the challenge of finding interesting locations on the map. Still, it might be nice to be able to configure it in such a way that well-known features are immediately revealed, such as roadways, while the remote areas are initially hidden.
Does it use an array of locations to flag the cleared spots? Maybe those can be pre-configured, although it would probably be tedious. Or, hmm... maybe there's a way to lay down some waypoint trails and have those be automatically cleared on the map? I'd kind of like to have that ability.

when you look at the minimap, and places you haven't been are blacked out. Lance Botelle's system also doesn't reveal parts of the map until you are there but not in combat (so if your fight takes you somewhere unexplored, it remains black on the mini-map while you are in combat)nicethugbert wrote...

Which implies that you can't fight and map at the same time. In my day you could do everything at the same time ...
Provided the DM was not looking you could even map the areas you were not in by simply peeking over the screen. For that reason I think this system flawed.

Yes, that part of it (not mapping during combat) is a little disconcerting during play.

Lance's fog of war system has options that allow it to be constantly mapping, or off during combat. M. Reider chose to go with off during combat. There's also some mapping related feats in there that I don't believe M. Reider used.rjshae wrote...

NTB, the modules I've played that use the FoW allow the minimap. At most, it may be hidden after transitions, but you can re-enable it with the N key.
