....companion that was previously a companion in either Origins or DA2, for a companion in DA3, who would it be and why?

No, thank you. Connect events together, but please don't include any previous characters.

Um, I'd say Sten if I HAD to have one, but it doesn't really make sense for him to show up again since it's quite possible he's dead. If I can choose NOT to have any companions from the first two games, I'm going with that.

Now, if I can only pick one CHARACTER to be a new COMPANION, I'm picking Cullen. He wins over Maraas by a narrow margin just because I don't know Maraas all that well since he had like, 8 lines.

Haha. I only asked because I remember something Gaider said of having a combination of new companions and past companions, so I thought if we did, who would we want?

Awesome question, OP!

As much as Alistair's my favorite, I think I'd have to go with...

Sten. I feel like there's tons of space left to hear the rest of his story. And while the Qunari may be pursuing other matters during the events of DAIII, we all know the Arishok has sent Sten out on recon before. He's obviously be interested in knowing how/why the nations down south are tearing themselves apart. And Sten himself may even be interested on a personal level since his experiences during the Blight introduced him to some mages. He's BA, and he's funny, and I'm still interested in filling in the blanks left by my meager knowledge of the Qun.

A close second place is Aveline, just because she was one of only two sane, dependable companions in DAII, and she makes more sense than Varric since she's technically Orlesian.

The reason I chose Bethany, is because as Hawke's sister, and because she was mostly gone after Act 1, there was not the same type of attachment (or resentment) for her, as other characters. So with a fresh Hero in DA3, she would almost be like a new companion.

I understand why people like the idea of seeing more of old characters. I just got really burned by the attempt made in DAII. I'd prefer to just see new characters since the PC will also be a new person anyway.

Deja, nobody's actually answering your question.

"no thanks" and "I want his other character instead" aren't answers. ;)

I think Charade would work better for this purpose, since Bethany may be deceased.

I don't want the old *companions* coming back even though I have a huge stupid crush on Sten.  I wouldn't mind maybe one (or at most two) known characters getting made into companions--IF it makes sense.  If it's possible that they're dead or otherwise seriously unavailable, NO THANK YOU.

But Charade was not a companion....just an unknown cousin that I met for about 5 minutes down in a cave, and then got a note from a few scenes later.

Well, if you rule out all the former companions that are possibly dead, the list is pretty slim and I didn't like most of them.

If I had to choose a previous companion? I'd pick Aveline.

Though honestly I'd rather not have any returning companions be companions again.

Let's save the debate about whether or not it's a good idea for another thread. If you knew you were going to get an old companion, regardless of what your opinion on the matter was, who would it be and why? lol.

I'll answer.

Varric. For the sheer entertainment of him.

But if Asunder had never happened- or at least the ending of Asunder...I'd go for Wynne because she was an exceptional healer, much better than Anders. And I think her POV would be really interesting considering...events.

Well, all companions that were potentially LIs, or potentially dead are automatically out. Any of those would thoroughly upset some group of players. I know Leliana and Zevran really upset me.

I guess Sten. Shale would be interesting, but Sten was a much greater mind. He was awesome in his stoic, unwavering dedication to his station in life, even while discovering more of the wider world. Seeing where he goes with this would be cool.

And see I found Sten boring. I thought it was a missed opportunity not to have Sten cameo in DA2 during Act 1 or 2, considering all of the Qunari issues. It would have been great to see him in his element- and I'd have loved to see him redesigned, personally. Leliana and Zevran didn't bother me, as they were both alive in all of my playthroughs (I never once have killed off a companion.) But I can see why people would be upset with it.

If you're going to ask a question, maybe it should be one that has more than one possible answer, hm? :-)

I was just going to make a list of characters who aren't dead and weren't LI's, but then I realized it would be a big spoiler fest.

Though just because a former LI companion can't be romanced in DAIII doesn't mean they wouldn't make a valuable companion. They might, in fact, be able to answer a lot of our burning questions about what happened to the Warden, Hawke, or our other companions.

^ or maybe your imported save could determine their romanceability.

What do you mean? Just because nine out of ten companions are ruled out in your playthrough doesn't mean nine out of ten are ruled out in mine, if that's what you mean. I thought since everyone has different companions and love interests...I guess I'm not clear completely.

Let me rephrase. If you could have one companion back as a future companion in a future game- and that companion would change depending on who was playing the game, who would it be? Realistically, there would only be a few that could feasibly come back without being retconned, but let's pretend anyone who is alive in YOUR particular playthroughs could come back.

Does that make more sense? It's not really meant to be a realistic question. Just a hypothetical one.

Just remember, that anything that actually happened in DA2 can be dismissed. The writing staff can just say Varric was lying to Cassandra. So you can change the histories of all your companions from DA2 if you wish.
