Lets say Morrigan was brought back as a new companion;
Old God Baby
Romance
Friendship
Eluvian
Each one of these variables should change some important aspect of her character. Whether or not she's the Warden's lover is entirely character defining for her. Then, if she wasn't, whether or not she viewed the Warden as her first true friend is also character defining for her.
You have a strong point as a general example, though in reference to Morrigan here's what I think:
Old God Baby: CRUCIAL. Seems like it's already kind of cannon anyway. Maybe she seduced Riordan anyway and got lucky? Retcon expected.
Romance: Morrigan will play it cool after the separation. Especially toward strangers.
Friendship: Same as above
Eluvian: Possibly part of her future with or without Old God Baby
And then there's the possibility that the devs could decide to just not address any of those issues at all. Would our curiousity eat away at us? Yep. But Morrigan could be up to some new scheme that would fill the voice nicely.
