After looking through a few of the forums here I noticed a lot of people using programs to assist with their creations.

I'll be getting 3d Studio Max for new models ect and Audacity seems the way to go for your sound and VO needs, are any other programs people advise getting? and for what part would they be used for (if its not quite self explanitory)

Thanks in advance for the info

If you are happy with just using vanilla assets, all you need is the toolset for the most part. However, if you want custom content then you'll need to use 3rd party programs. Of course there are some things that straddle the line, like Excel/Calc for editing 2DAs, which you'll likely need either way.
What specific 3rd party apps you might need varies based on what it is you plan on doing and what your skillset is.

I discovered fairly early on that while I can use SOME of what is already available, I'll need to make a lot of my own stuff for the projects content, So 3d studio was a no brainer, photoshop is a must apparently for textures and so forth (according to what I'm reading anyway, but stands to reason) And I saw a few issues with VO and Dahlia said she used audacity (someone else said they used it but I forget the name) Basicly, while I will be using some of the vanilla materials, new content will be added, textures, monsters, NPC's, areas, music, voices etc.
Its more a "what do you use for your projects" question

Regarding Audacity, I only use that as a converter for whatever VO files I already have to the Toolset requirement of 24 KHz . I use Cubase SX for recording and mixing. But Audacity can perform the basic functions you need, and it's free.
