Now that I've seen how the series end I'm not sure I want to visit any other time period at all in the ME universe.
Before Shepards story? Only if it involves humans. I want humans involved. I need them as a point of reference so to speak. And the near future feeling that I like so much with the ME universe would be gone without humans.
And the humans have only been involved in intergalactic business for a very short period of time. So it would be hard coming up with any interesting at all if it's set before the events of ME1-3.
Maybe the first contact war. But any prequel would still feel pointless since Mr "I...Don't know" will send the galaxy to the dark ages anyway.
And a story set after ME3? I don't know. How long after would that be 15,000-20,000 years? All ties to previous events would have to be gone to avoid forcing a canon ending on the players and thus not interesting at all for me. And obviously the near future feeling would be gone as well.
Sure, they could have the next game be set directly after or at least only a few years after ME3 and name it
"
Mass Effect 4: Mad Max In Space". But I think i'll pass on that. And again, hard to do with no canon ending.
Besides... If I want a game with a post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting I'll just start up Fallout 3.
So the problem with sequels is that if BioWare want to create another Mass Effect game set after the events of ME3, be it 10,000 or 10 years they have to choose a canon ending for ME3. And they have stated that there is no canon ending.
And should they backtrack on that decision and force their favorite color on the players as the canon ending I foresee another sh*tstorm coming up.
