I'm very happy they didn't use SecureROM - if they had, I would not have bought the game. I'm very happy using a cd-key/disc in drive combo for copy protection.

with you on that.

a game could be game of the decade. if it's got securom loaded on it, it can kiss my arse. i boycotted ME because of it.

having the disc in is a small price to pay for being able to install/uninstall the game as many times as you want.

Stardock releases their games free of DRM completely, and I applaud them for it.

DRM is almost always IMMEDIATELY bypassed at launch. It does nothing to stop pirates. It does however cost the publisher money to license, and it annoys paying customers.

Please explain to me the supposed benefit of DRM that outweighs annoying paying customers, and paying to license it?

Because your "average" pc consumer has no clue where or how to get "no cd" cracks, and that's the majority of the market they are selling to.  It keeps those people from passing around a copy among "friends of the family" which in turn does make an impact.

I love how people are so spoiled nowadays that they think just because they bought some sort of media that they have the right to do what they want with the data on it.  I've got news for you, in most cases, legally, you don't.  Whether or not that's a good thing is another whole discussion.

Stop being so lazy and put the damn disc in to play, sheesh.  People act like they are being soooo inconvenienced by it.  Heaven forbid they may have to put the disc in.  It takes sooo much effort after all.

You should be on your knees thanking BioWare for only using a simple disc check and not SecuROM or something worse, but instead you come here and complain.  Ungrateful is what I call it.

lol, sounds like the same arguement my mother used to get me whenever the batteries in the t.v. remote were dead Image IPB

uhmm, curious question here guys, i bought a cd copy of the game with perks on it(stone prisoner and blood armor). ill try reinstalling the game via ea download manager. would i still have my dl contents when i reinstall the game?

When you uninstall the DVD version it should ask you if you want to delete your save files, say no to this. Then install the download version. When you fire it up you will have all of your saved games ready to go. I don't know if your DLC will be authorized or not, but you will have it on your machine. If it is not authorized then you will have to login and then it will be.
If you do an install on a totally separate machine you can login and download your DLC.

What about just releasing something so you can play without the DVD in drive, as far as I am in knowledge of you are allowed to make a backup copy of the game, for own use and to preserve the original game secureing it for scratched and the likes etc...

Or if you got a DVD Original bought then giving a free download of the game that contains the same key/serial number or whatever to make sure that you do not have to over time cause damage to your DVD as it is?

i think someone said you can get a digital copy from the ea downloader via your serial number. i must ask, however, what people are doing that their dics scratch so easily? my bg1 and bg2 dics are each roughly 10 years old and are in fine shape. are there people who attack their discs on a regular basis? if it's kept in the computer or in the case it should be ok.

i have to agree with enderandrew. It really doesn't help stop piracy.
And while I understand why they do it (in a way), I think it's a shame to require the physcial CD. I've had problems with other games where the CD dies or gets damaged since it's a physical medium and I loose the ability to play.
I do wish they'd come up with something else -- like allow us to choose whether it's validated by CD or an online connection. If so, I'd lock the CD in a safe place, rather than carrying it with me when I want to play.
Ah well....

and again, it has been stated that you can use the ea download manager and get a digital copy with your cd key. look at that. bioware and ea hooked us up again. you buy the cd version, you can have a cd copy and a digital copy. stop complaining. there's no reason to.

Really? Can we really do that? That is awesome news! Would you please give me some instructions on how to? I own a C.E. version and I really would love to spare my DVD! I had issues in the past like I posted early in this thread!

Oh wait... EA download manager does not run on Win 7 64-bit system.. at least it said so after I bought the DDE and had to cancel my order with the c/c company because off it. (EA only says that after the order is placed, not before... clever huh?) ... Anyway, if you can give the instructions I'll wait till EA d/l manager can be run on my system for that!

Just enter your CD key into the download manager and download all 7GB of it, nothing special about it.

I'm running Win7 X64 and it works just fine for me.

Well, there is actually something special about it! And not in a good sense. If anyone can help me here, appreciated!

B33ker? =)

First, your link takes me here, since I'm in Brazil.
http://eastore.ea.co...300/ccRef.en_US

I can only get the EA download manager from there, which I just did and installed... again. When I run it i get the exact same error I describe here, posted long ago and just highlighted for better visualization.

From the EA support page here:

O GDEA suporta o Windows 7?

meaning:

Does EADM support Win7?

Unfortunately, due to some incompatibility issues found during the tests, the EA Download Manager will not support Windows 7 at release. The software EADM (version 5.1.0.4) was developed, tested and released for XP and Vista (only 32-bit) before Win 7 was available. blah.. blah... blah... blah...

We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you...

Is there a working version of it for win7 64-bit? What is your version for EADM, B33ker?

Your post I quoted didn't mention you were in Brazil (greetings from the US!), so didn't have that info at the time.

Perhaps try right clicking on it and Run as Administrator?

Almost looks like a JAVA error maybe. Do you have the full version of JAVA installed?

My account is the single one in my system and has full administrator privileges. I have full Java 6 update 17 installed.

My Win 7 Ultimate 64 is US version. The problem seems to be with the DM version I can get that either is not the latest version (but I'm afraidd it is) or has problem running in a US windows in Brazil! =)

But it is weird that EA BRZ support site, which is not in Brazil, states that EADM doesn't run on 64-bit systems, while people like you can have it working without problems. I don't think it is related to my Win7 version though. I'm sure I could reinstall it in PT-BR version and I'd get the same error.

I know you got your answer, but if it is a major problem, just download games from Steam or D2D.

Major frickin' ditto here. There was another Bioware product that I did not buy because of SecureROM. I just refuse to support those kinds of measures. We are the paying customer, treat us right.

That said, a CD/DVD in the drive is inconsequential.

So is there any kind of DRM associated with downloading it from the EA Manager? I'm interested in going that route if not.  Also wonder why they just don't have it so you can register the game on Steam if they are letting you download it from EA Manager when you bought a physical copy.

When you activate the game through the EADM, EADM basically becomes the DRM for the digital download version of the game.

The problem is leaving a cd in a drive is not good for the CD, mine became discoloured and dodgy after a few months, and I have problems starting the game now.

Sure you could say, "well remove the CD and put it in only when you play". I'd agree if this game hadn't already dumped a massive 16GB of files on my hard disk (assumedly so I don't have to put in a CD for cut scenes)? That makes no sense.

The CD-required policy might be the best solution for the business, but it's fast making an expensive game unplayable for me....

BioWare and even EA needs to look at other companies and realize that they are so behind in this area its not ok. For instance, World of Warcraft has a battle.net account in which you install ur game and register your cd-key to your account and you never have to worry about the disk or the cd-key ever again. EA needs something like this, that will register your cd-key with your account and you can download the game for free once you do so, if you lose/break the disk. I have Dragon-age origins installed on my computer, i have no idea what the cd-key is or can i even play cuz i lost the disk months ago. This bugs me so much, I don't even have access to a game that I bought. At least for battle.net I know that I will always have the game at hand and its cd-key.

I have not problems and am glad they did not use copy protection. Thanks Bioware/EA. The game works the same way games have worked for the last 15 years, put the disk in play.

You can find your CD key by going into your Dagon Age install and locating the DAOriginsConfig utility. It' s in the bin_ship folder. Just run the utility and check the Game tab on the right once it starts up. That will show your CD key. You don't need the CD in the drive to do this.

As for DLing the game, you can go to EA's web site and DL their EA Download Manager. Use the EADM and your game's CD key to grab a digital copy of the game.

If I understand you correctly, you've installed the game and lost the disc? If so, you'll need to grab the digital copy. Make sure you grab your CD key first though. See my previous post for instructions.
