Because your "average" pc consumer has no clue where or how to get "no cd" cracks, and that's the majority of the market they are selling to. It keeps those people from passing around a copy among "friends of the family" which in turn does make an impact.
I love how people are so spoiled nowadays that they think just because they bought some sort of media that they have the right to do what they want with the data on it. I've got news for you, in most cases, legally, you don't. Whether or not that's a good thing is another whole discussion.
Stop being so lazy and put the damn disc in to play, sheesh. People act like they are being soooo inconvenienced by it. Heaven forbid they may have to put the disc in. It takes sooo much effort after all.
You should be on your knees thanking BioWare for only using a simple disc check and not SecuROM or something worse, but instead you come here and complain. Ungrateful is what I call it.
When you uninstall the DVD version it should ask you if you want to delete your save files, say no to this. Then install the download version. When you fire it up you will have all of your saved games ready to go. I don't know if your DLC will be authorized or not, but you will have it on your machine. uhmm, curious question here guys, i bought a cd copy of the game with perks on it(stone prisoner and blood armor). ill try reinstalling the game via ea download manager. would i still have my dl contents when i reinstall the game?

What about just releasing something so you can play without the DVD in drive, as far as I am in knowledge of you are allowed to make a backup copy of the game, for own use and to preserve the original game secureing it for scratched and the likes etc...
Or if you got a DVD Original bought then giving a free download of the game that contains the same key/serial number or whatever to make sure that you do not have to over time cause damage to your DVD as it is?

And while I understand why they do it (in a way), I think it's a shame to require the physcial CD. I've had problems with other games where the CD dies or gets damaged since it's a physical medium and I loose the ability to play.
I do wish they'd come up with something else -- like allow us to choose whether it's validated by CD or an online connection. If so, I'd lock the CD in a safe place, rather than carrying it with me when I want to play.

and again, it has been stated that you can use the ea download manager and get a digital copy with your cd key. look at that. bioware and ea hooked us up again. you buy the cd version, you can have a cd copy and a digital copy. stop complaining. there's no reason to.

(EA only says that after the order is placed, not before... clever huh?) ... Anyway, if you can give the instructions I'll wait till EA d/l manager can be run on my system for that!

Just enter your CD key into the download manager and download all 7GB of it, nothing special about it.
I'm running Win7 X64 and it works just fine for me.

Perhaps try right clicking on it and Run as Administrator?
Almost looks like a JAVA error maybe. Do you have the full version of JAVA installed?

For instance, World of Warcraft has a battle.net account in which you install ur game and register your cd-key to your account and you never have to worry about the disk or the cd-key ever again. EA needs something like this, that will register your cd-key with your account and you can download the game for free once you do so, if you lose/break the disk. I have Dragon-age origins installed on my computer, i have no idea what the cd-key is or can i even play cuz i lost the disk months ago. This bugs me so much, I don't even have access to a game that I bought. At least for battle.net I know that I will always have the game at hand and its cd-key.
