Just release a no CD patch now -.- .... Why do i have to go out all reinstall the game and then download the entire game and install it again to play without the cd? It just sound like Bioware is being lazy right now.

Surprised nobody has said this yet.

If you download the EA Download manager, and then enter your CD key into the Activation tab, you can download the digital copy of the game and play without the DVD.

Anyways, we have been playing games with the CD in the drive for over a decade now.  Why is it all of the sudden a problem and surpising?

This post was truly on-point.  I use DAO and Awakening to game at home on my Super Desktop PC, but when I'm at my GF's and want to play on her laptop, I don't like having to lug my game discs over to her apartment.  So, after reading this post, I tried the EA Download Manager method, and redeemed my DAO and Awakening registration codes, and now both games show in the Download Manager as playable, without the DVD in the disc drive!  I had already installed them via the DVDs I had, but the EA DM noticed they were installed and confirmed via my registration keys that I could launch them with no discs required!

Thanks for this great tip!

For some reason I had to uninstall my DVD version first, and then use the EADM to download and install it again. But once I did that, yes, it works without the disc in the drive. So yay.

I have to say, while there are a lot of things I dislike about modern gaming, this trend towards storing your data and games "in the cloud" does have it's pluses. Given we tend to play on multiple machines (and even under multiple OSes these days), it's great to be able to have your games travel with you, with minimal messing around.

Well done BioWare.

Why are some mods so against removing the CD check when EA is providing that possibility. I understand they don't want people using certain "other ways" to remove the disc checks, but if a EA is providing a digital copy for retail customers mods should just say so. I'm glad one actually did.

I too can confirm that the EADM route appears to be a viable way to get the game up and running without a DVD. I was able to login with my bioware account ID and redeem my game (ultimate edition). It showed up as "ready to play" but with the physical install it still requires the DVD in the drive, so not quite ready yet. I'm now downloading as we speak after which I suspect it will function correctly.

For those with a narrow pipe or low download quota, I'd like to point out that in most places outside the US, circumventing copy protection is not illegal in and of itself..

So just out of curiousity..... I have the Physical Ultimate Edition which took me about 4 months to track down because its so popular where I live. Anyhow what happens if my game becomes so scratched up am I going to have to just buy it over again since I need the disk to play the game. That is kinda... crappy Im a big gamer so when I play games my games ware down quite vastly due to my disc reader. Even though I only play about 4 hrs every other 2 days of the week. I find it ridiculous.... Bioware should have given a more in update of price and just given you both the physical and electronic copy... Like you play the Physical and can prove its broke down and doesn't playback anymore and then then Electronic one opens up for download so you can then play it that way. MY disc reader causes my OS to heat up faster. I should have gotten the Electronic version so I can play less in a day then I tended to. That head from the disc reader is known to cause distortions and alterations surely to the disc in which it may sustain.

butbut, if we didnt have to play with a CD we wouldnt be able to cuddle it after playing it and loving it. we can even make tiny ribbons to put around it to protect it from the evils in the world.

But seriously, the amount of lazy that seem to be going around nowadays is kinda horrible, with having the CD you get the option of not having to be connected to the net to play or install, so when people are screaming because their internet isnt working and they cant play their games, you can sit there playing your game for hours and hours with no problem.
We're been using CDs in our PCs since the first PC owner tried to cram a pancake into the slot, it only takes another 20 minutes of your time to switch to no-cd play, surely 20 minutes isnt too much of your time to be able to play withouth a CD for 3 months?

Contact EA, maybe if you provide them your legit key they may allow you to download the digital version for free with a new key, but I doubt it.

A friend of mine was having problems with his 2142 retail copy, his CD key wasn't working for some odd reason and he contacted EA support and they pretty much told him they couldn't help him and after it was all said and done he had to buy the game again from the EA store for 15 bucks.

It can be slightly annoying, but when you think about it having to insert the dvd in your drive is a very small and easily achieved thing. The only real annoyance I can imagine would be if the dvd was damaged.

Or if you play on a laptop and the dvd drive suddenly stops working, say, like mine just did.

Well... to be honest I don't see much of a point in complaining there.
A solution is just one four-word-google-search away.

Not to mention that since it only works with a proper, legal DAO account and serial, I would assume it's not even that evil in terms of legal mumbo-jumbo.

I wouldn't bet on that, to be honest. I haven't read through the EULA (seriously, who does that?) but I wouldn't be surprised at all if the wording in there came down to that it's illegal to circumvent the disc check in any imaginable way.

Please explain to me the supposed benefit of DRM that outweighs annoying paying customers, and paying to license it?

Because your "average" pc consumer has no clue where or how to get "no cd" cracks, and that's the majority of the market they are selling to.  It keeps those people from passing around a copy among "friends of the family" which in turn does make an impact.

Ah, but then they turn to the almighty Google (:P), and the almighty Google gives them the answer: The topmost link leads directly to the most used crack site on the web. (I know, 'cause I once had to download a no-cd crack for a game that won't run on modern systems without one...)

biowherewolf wrote...

i have to agree with enderandrew. It really doesn't help stop piracy.
And while I understand why they do it (in a way), I think it's a shame to require the physcial CD. I've had problems with other games where the CD dies or gets damaged since it's a physical medium and I loose the ability to play.
--B. Where.

Well, there are worse copy protection techniques out there. Worst is probably the one used by UbiSoft.
Nowadays all of their recent titles require a permanent internet connection to even play offline. If that ain't a turnoff, then I don't know what is. One thing is clear though, I'll never buy another game from them until that DRM protection is ditched, gone and sent to the underworld, and that probably means never...
Oh, and even that copy protection has been cracked by using server emulation.

Hope someone can confirm for me??

So now there is ea 'Origin'. I just bought DAO Ultimate edition physical disc (which is awesome). I'm going overseas soon and want to leave my disc at home and just take my laptop.

I've installed and registered my physical copy. So if I uninstall via Origin, then do I get the option to download it via Origin?...and will that mean I can play it without using my disc?

Hope someone can advise...Thanks

Solved! and here's a 'How to' for anyone else who wants to intall their Ultimate edition via Origins after having bought the original disc. Also there's an issue with not recognising the dlc, and I've included detail to solve that too - Here goes:
Assuming you have installed the game and it shows under your profile in Origin + you have previously unlocked the dlc to your profile
- Go into Origin and sign-in
- Go to 'my games' and look for Dragons Age Origins Ultimate Edition - Choose the uninstall option
- The control panel will open and you you then uninstall DAO
- Close and re-open (and re-sign-in) Origin
- Go to 'my games' and look for Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition - Choose the download option
- Download the game
When you start the game, you'll notice all of the dlc shows as unauthorized - Don't worry follow these steps which worked for me:
- Close the game and Origin
- Go the the game directory and open the '_Intaller' folder
- Run the DAUServicesetup file - Once run it will show as completed
- Start Origin and start the game again
- Voila - All of your dlc is showing and most importantly...
- You can now play the game without using the DVD

Big thanks to no-one here, but to the EA online support who were great!!

Enjoy

I have CE and UE on disc and wanted a digital copy of UE.

I just tried the EA Origin Beta (prevously named EA Download Manager) and everything worked perfectly.

1.
Download EA Origin Beta (previously named EA Download Manager) here:
http://www.origin.com/download

2.
Install EA Origin Beta and create a user (or log in if you already have an EA account).

3.
Start EA Origin Beta by logging in and click on the "options" button (cog wheel) and then "Redeem Game Code" from the drop down menu, in the top right corner beside your user name. Insert the boxed game code found in the game box manual.

You should now have a digital copy of your boxed game.

I just watched highlander on blu ray and you really expect me to keep changing cd
cd's for this game.

This post was somewhat obtuse.... Most people would register their games and check out their account created. I found out by myself that there was an option to download the digital copy of the game. I assumed everyone else could too... I'm not trying to pick on anyone I am just saying look at your account with your registered games before asking questions like this. I will say this though the organization of the accounts on this website is more advanced than it needs to be... It reminds me of the Starcraft 2 Galaxy Editor, over-complicating simple tasks.
