EDIT: Although... hmm. Broodmothers are females, and female Qunari don't fight. I'm not sure, then... I know there are Qunari mercenaries, and 'rebels' who believe Qunari society is opressive, perhaps females venture out that way?
Possible but also somewhat unlikely, as darkspawn appear to get most of their.. resources from civilian raids.
Attempting to kidnap and control a subject that can fight back is.. unhealthy at best.

true but not all qunari are content with how life goes on and some leave evidenced by the qunari mercenariesThe Angry One wrote...

As Sten proves, the arishok apparently get curious and send members of the antaam to 'feel' the world. It's perfectly plausible (and obviously happened) that some get captured.
The problem with that is, only females become Broodmothers, and no Qunari female is ever made a soldier. In fact they're rarely seen outside their cities.
im sure there were females that left as well

1) The Darkspawn live underground, this does not mean they are limited to the Deep Roads, although seem to prefer the Dwarven tunnel system. This means they could abduct anymore anywhere anytime.
2) The Qunari captured a few Thedas cities during their first invasion including Par Vollen.
3) A Brood mother is the only way to become a Darkspawn, female's that are infected become female darkspawn-Broodmothers and males that are infected become male darkspawn therefore a Qunari male captured or infected would begin an ogre transformation.

Also, Sten: No. Hell No, I do not want an Ogre flinging anything besides those damned rocks.
However, food for thought. Dwarves cannot cast magic. Genlocks are made from Dwarven DNA as it were. There are Genlock Emissaries...

It means that they were a recent addition to the Darkspawn.
The contradiction is the lore that says that ogres are traditionally seen in Blights, which follows that Ogres must have been seen in the Blight of 700 years ago.

You know that's somewhat of a contradiction.
Ogres only appear during a Blight, but the last Blight was 700 years ago.. but if Ogres are born from Qunari, the Qunari arrived on Thedas 300 years ago.
Now I suppose the darkspawn may have reached the other side of the world already, but I thought their rapid mobility was due to the deep roads, which don't extend overseas.
Are you sure it is 700 years? I remember 400 years ago, of course I could be misremembering.

So.... That means they would need quite a few qunari to do this and no doubt the Qunari would fight to the death before being captured.

The last Blight was 400 years ago, but other than that you're correct.

Yeah, but there weren't that many antaam sent out at a time... Plus, brood mothers are required to eat the flesh of their kin to become what they are, and then more are needed to create the Ogres.
Assuming they survive at all, the death rate for potential broodmothers is quite high it says.

Pft I'd stick a pointy sword in it and it'd go down all the same.
And no I doubt it's possible, according to Avernus darkspawn and demons are entirely alien to each other.

No, I strongly doubt this, as warriors would be the only ones the arishok might send and as women aren't fighters it's highly unlikely that a woman got captured.
Also, how do we know that the ogres aren't new more recent occurence.
One more note, the wiki states the the Qunari are seen around the lands of ferelden four centuries ago. It's possible that they may have existed on their island settlement well before that.

who says they have to eat their kin all it says is that to become a broodmother all you need is a female dwarf, human, ect that survives the taint and grows tentacles my guess is the eating of kin is just a bonus or helps the process go fasterII Relics II wrote...

Darkspawn have a connection to the Fade. They're not alien to the Fade, but their physiology is alien to demons to the point they repel each other.

1) Darkspawn live underground, not just within the Deep Roads although they prefer the Dwarven Tunnel system. That means they can abduct anyone anywhere anytime.
2) During the First Qunari invasion they captured and held several Thedas cities for decades, and still hold Par Vollen.
3) You don't need a Broodmother to become a Darkspawn, it's simple if you are infected and don't undergo the Grey Warden ritual, several horrible things can happen or you transform into a Darkspawn, females that are infected become female darkspawn i.e. Broodmothers and males that are infected become male darkspawn i.e. hurlocks, genlocks, shrieks, and ogres.
Hope that helped.

Females go through mutations that end in becoming a broodmother, or death.

The small number of Ogres are obviously related to the small number of Quanari captured.
What's really scary is imagining what'd happen if the Qunari start another offensive and a foothold in Ferelden or Orlais. Qunari Settlement near the Deep Roads = More Qunari Broodmothers = More Ogres = We're screwed.
