Max Payne 3 on the other hand is something I'm looking forward to. I might also pick up The Witcher 2 Enhanced Ed.

I say the better personally. This will get rid of some of the elitists, and then also the people that just jump to whatever the newest game is. In my opinion, it will leave the people that A) actually like the game and want to play with people, aren't jerks, and C)people that know about the classes and use them correctly instead of just playing for funzies
So you're expecting both the elitists and the people that play for fun to leave?
50-70% may have been too low an estimate...
By funzies I more meant the people that will bring in an engineer with 2 heavy weapons or the ones that play a vanguard and just charge around rather than playing seriously.

How much one like's the game has no bearing on the population or desire to play said game.
Mass Effect is arguably my favorite video game series of all time. Period. To me, it's THAT good. But let's be honest....I, for one, can't pick up SP again since after doing two runs on Insanity and getting the same crap ending, there is nothing left to do since my choices don't matter. Waiting for EC is the only solution.
My N7 level is over 800 - i have all N7 weapons between Rank III - V. I play MP daily. I am not an elitist, and genuinely enjoy the game. But it is getting extremely repetitive with one game mode and basically just grinding for credits - there are no other incentives to get me to keep playing. It's just a moneysink for BioWare at this point for others as well. All i'm saying is MP needs a change of pace, and fast. Regardless of what you feel about ME and the RPG/Shooter genre, big games like Diablo, Max Payne, GH: FR and the BF3 expansion packs will significantly reduce the population - that's to be expected.
But I feel like if BioWare takes their sweet time as more and more new games are relased, it's going to give THEM less incentive to bring out more and more content as the population continues to die down. In other words, stop with the weapons and character cards (unless it's a Volus or Elcor), and inject some actual, substantive game modes into MP. It's not that hard to comprehend what MP needs. Time is of the essence here.

good point! it does get rather stale quickly and they dont give you any incentive to play more beyond getting better equpipment. they really do need to add a few modes fast or this ships gonna sink by the end of the year.J717 wrote...

I'm not saying I play all the time or even that I do have a life, but I don't ONLY play one game, maybe that is part of what keeps me able to keep playing this? I don't know.
And genre is a big thing in video games. I play almost ONLY rpgs. Don't get me wrong, I play halo and call of booty because my friends play them, but if I'm looking for a new game to play, I go to the RPG games before anything else. And I know that most people do this as well. And as many people have pointed out, your argument applies only really to pc players. I play pc games, but my xbox is where my mass effect saves are, and I'm not likely to go to Diablo 3 anyhow.

I really, really enjoy MP....but without any actual gameplay enhancements and not just characters and weapons added...I feel like Diablo 3's imminent release will kill off at least 50-70% of the population.
Anyone else feel the same way? We need more game modes!
I am actually looking forward to the release of Diablo III and Halo 4, so that the hardcore fans can relax and enjoy the ME3 MP without all of the whiny new-release "fans" with a sense of entitlement getting int the way of our enjoyment.
Clear-em out, I say.

D3 will cause a vacuum of players from every game on the market for about... 2 weeks. Most will hit the boredom wall early, because D3 is not very fun or engaging. It pales in comparison to D2.

That sucks to hear. Either way I'll be getting D3, but I hope to keep playing ME3 because there are still lots of things I want to do and try (both in multi and sp). Time will tell, I suppose.

Diablo sucks, too much clicking.
Plus in D3 you'll be able to buy gear for real money (hm sound familiar?) so it will simply be a game of
whoever spends the most $$ = wins.
How is that different from ME3 MP? What's that? It's not? Oh ok.
This is actuall why I'll be playing D3. I'm not poor so it's gonna be a blast. = )
