A kama is closer to a sickle than a scythe. It isn't a polearm, but a hand weapon.

As for those "war scythes", those are significantly altered into a more halberd-like weapon. Scythes, as they regularly are, do not make good weapons. Besides, if someone heard they could wield a scythe in this game and got that thing, they would be severely disappointed.

Of course, otherwise the scythe would be useless. As stated earlier. It's just a tool. Only after applying modifications to the blade can it be used as a weapon effectively. It's not my fault that people are ignorant and want to fight with a farming tool. :P

Eh. I miss polearms, but then I also miss a party of six and narrow corridors that could be blocked by two or three armed characters... and without those, what's the point?

Japanese peasants were known to fight with a kama, which is a short scythe.

I made some and tried them in the SCA. I fought with two at a time. I would usually use one kama to catch the other person's weapon, and hook it, and then go in with the second kama for the kill.

It was very effective. I could also use a kama to try and pull a shield down. I learned in the SCA not to underestimate sword and shield. It really is amazingly effective.

They're quite from a scythe, though - but yeah, the way you can hook-parry with those is spectacularily effective.

It'll be easy to mod in poleaxes and the like, but spears will looks foolish using the current animation set.

Ok I wish they had both one-handed polearms/spears and 2handed.  Anyone else?:?

YES - I've been hunting all over the net, from Nexus to DAMods to GVZ.  No polearm mods that I could find.

Uhh a (deliberatley crafted as a weapon and not cheap standard farm issue) Scythe could take someones head off in 1 swipe before that person (Whos lets say using a regular sword) could even reach the one with the scythe

Heh.  Ever hear of a rare and extremely hard to master combat tactic called 'ducking'?  There's another one called 'blocking'.  Of course, my favorite is 'stepping forward inside the arc of the weapon, disarming the person, then taking his head with it' but I'm also trained in CQB.  Krav Maga 4tehwin.

The scythe has the same problem any 2 handed weapon has.  It's slow.  Now, in the hands of a master who understands the bladed end isn't the only usable part of a weapon it would probably be deadly.  But true weapon masters are hard to come by.

Btw, I'm going to point out there's a difference between a scythe and a 'war scythe'.  A war scythe is more like a narrow bladed polearm, or naganata spear with a straight shaft.  It's a good weapon.  Regular scythe's though... awkard.  They have curved shafts with a horizontal stud to grasp for leverage when scything grasses.

Pole-arms are mostly used as two-handed weapons given the heavier head. Pikes and sarissa were long spears that despite their seeming length (the longest used in troops being about fifteen feet) were one-handed weapons used in combination with rather wide and hefty round shields (between chin and shin).

I think these are a natural development necessitated from battle with "darkspawn" and also horse archers would become essential. In essence, Persian and Macedonian tactics would be needed.

Of course Bioware seems to have a trouble with computer animation of cavalry and vehicles in their games. This goes along with their wrongheaded antipathy for teleportation and swimming. Lack of running, crawling, flying, jumping, climbing, riding, teleportation, and swimming have bedeviled Bioware games since the publication of Baldur's Gate vomited over the initial demo version. In any case, pikes might work but cavalry is probably not workable.

I think we might hope for a Bioware/Creative Assembly collaboration someday -- and then we would see animations of acceptable cavalry, swimming of a crude sort, better implementation of running, fairly workable climbing, falling from a height, etc. Of course that would probably be for a Dragon Age Total War game. And it would be slightly unlikely given that Bioware is populated by demi-Canadians and Creative Assembly is populated by faux-Britiks.

In any case, a spear and shield is one possible combination. The short spear and shield is probably not different than a sword and shield as far as the game might be concerned except with a slightly longer striking range. Long spears would probably only appear in animated sequences because these are best used by armies but not by individual troopers nor small troop battles.

A spear might have good critical chance and good penetration rating but mildly inferior strength multiplier (using two hands does not change this) and a minute defense bonus. One might compare them to daggers but daggers that use strength modifiers. Throwing a spear should be possible but does anyone remember how long it took Bioware to implement javelins? It would be swifter for them to implement pandas and koalas.

As to pole-arms, as Dragon magazine advised, these are remarkably useful to adventurers and should never be underestimated. A good bill-hook has saved more lives than one might readily guess! One might keep in mind that pole-arms are two-handed weapons while most spears (even the longest) are not. Pole-arms probably should follow the rule descriptors for two-handed axes except that pole-arms might provide a small bonus to defense and do not have such a good critical chance score.

In my experience, it is far more satisfying to enjoy what you have, rather than wish for what you don't.

Not when a game company, who's had a solid run of creating a variety of weaponry in it's RPGs up to this point, including polearms, suddenly does not. Then it's time to request what SHOULD be there, versus the paltry choices that are present.

They'd have to improve 2H in the game first before they ever even think about adding more 2H weapon types.

To start, they should improve the animation and mechanics first.

Just to put this out there, wolfva2 has a very good point stepping inside the reach of a spear, polearm, etc. is incredibly easy outside a large scale battle. maybe bioware realized this. (large scale means at least 50 combatants on each side.)

I too vote for spears (and other weapons mentioned). They could make it a non-reach weapon to avoid the animation entanglement, it's not that standing two steps away from your target is going to make a big difference in the DA engine.
