Just started a Vanguard playthrough. Any tips on weapon loadout? Is the Wraith worth spending the money on? I know it sucks in MP, but what about SP?
I'm running a power-based Shep, using Reave as my bonus power for tons of biotic explosions.
Best shotgun for Vanguard?

Depends on your playstyle.
My favourite build is Claymore shotgun + Barrier bonus power
specced for maximum damage resistance, maximum weapon damage, ignores Nova
Other shotguns I like: AT-12 Raider, Graal, and Katana
I am not a fan of the rest.

The Grall with smart choke gives a Vanguard a good weapon for all distances and still have good/very good cool down times. Also the Carnifex/Paladin work well, as the Vanguard with Charge/Nova doesn't really need a close up weapon - with the short cool down, the only thing you have to do is stay from the Banshee/Atlas/Bruet after the Nova while the short recharge occurs, then charge/nova again. Even then, sometimes the Banshee gets you. Sort of like the bear - somedays you get the bear, somedays the bear gets you.

I'm using a Wraith currently. I carry a Wraith V and Carnifex V. Cooldown bonus is ~ 160% with weight perk from passive. Prior to that I ran with Scimitar V and Eviscerator V. Wraith V weighs the same as Scimitar V but does a lot more damage. I'm currently using the barrel and shredder mods but thinking about trading in the shredder for a smart choke.
While the Wraith does less damage than a Claymore, it's a lot lighter and you get two shots before reloading. It doesn't have a ton of spare ammo but I don't find that to be a problem. I do more damage from charge combos than from my weapon.
I think you could adapt your play style to any shotgun. Disciple would be a good choice if you need faster cooldowns. With my style, I could use any of the lighter shotguns but I'd rather have the extra damage for when I need it. There's enough ammo around that I don't need a huge magazine.

I used the Wraith for both my first and second (insanity) Vangaurd playthroughs. It never let me down.
I figured that any time I used the shotgun, it was because an enemy has too much health to be taken down by melee, charge or nova. Claymore might be damned good, and my old ME2 war buddy, but the Wraith has three very distinct advantages over it this time around:
a) longer range. With a choke mod, your shotgun is now a viable medium range weapon and this is very, very valuable at some points in the game.
two shots in the clip, and a speedy reload. Sometimes you miss. It happens. As the gun has both a swift firing rate and one of the lowest reload rates of all shotguns, this won't mean death as a Claymore miss might
c) it is substantially lighter. You can now carry a pistol like the carnifex for a sniping weapon without wrecking your recharge times. Happy days for all!
Oh and re your bonus power, if you have From Ashes try Dark Channel for a bonus power. It sets up explosions like Reave, but it does not 'expire' when enemies are exploded, and passes from enemy to enemy when they die, so you can explode an entire enemy squad, one by one (or several by several...) on the one cast of the power... if you fancy making 'Insanity' seem like easy mode...

Claymore is the best when it is fully upgraded in NG++. If they are dead, they cannot shot you and Claymore is very effective at killing things in a shot.
Katana is the most balanced in terms of weight, damage and availability.
Disciple is the lightest shotgun; and it still packs enough of a punch, making it very easy for Shepard to carry other weapons such as the Mattock or GPR while maintaining 200% recharge bonus.
Scimitar is the best ammo power shotgun.
Graal, it is a nice shotgun but if one takes its weight to damage output ratio into consideration, it is to me only moderate.
Raider is a shotgun I wish I had =.=
I usually mode accurate shotguns with Extended Barrel and inaccurate shotguns with chokes, they all work very very well in close - medium range.
If you are running a power based Vanguard, I believe the Disciple would be the shotgun of choice because of its weight.

The Geth Plasma Shotgun puts the rest to shame.

PLayed Krogan Vanguard yesterday with a Claymore X . Pretty much kills anything in your sights after charging in front of them.
I normally use Geth Shotty as my def shotgun but lately i've grown bored with it and everyone uses it. I don't like the charge up time.

I use the Wraith on my Vanguard, with the High Calibre Barrel and Shredder mods. Generally I use Charge + Nova to kill just about everything; the Wraith is purely backup for those tough enemies that can survive that combo, or that are too dangerous to get close to.

In ME3 I found the Disciple to be the absolute best shotgun for a Vanguard. I think it has incredible damage for a 4-shot shotgun, and the accuracy seemed spot-on to me.
Personally, I don't think the official stats line up with what the gun actually does in combat.

Wraith X and Paladin X. ChargeNovaShotgunChargeNvaShotgunChargeDead. On a Ravager. Banshees and Brutes are slightly tougher. But it's fun, even on insanity.
