Wasn't sure whether to post in the tech support area, but since this is where the builders tend to hang out, I'll check here first.......
All of a sudden (it was fine a couple of days ago), my toolset won't start up - every time I try, within a second or two, Win7 chucks up a message saying its "Stopped working" & the only option available is to click on a 'close program' button.
Anyone have any ideas what might be going on? I've not changed any settings either on my 'puter or the toolset, and Neverwinter itself is still running fine.
Just tried the Steam version of NWN2 I installed on my old laptop & the toolset there works fine still.
Any other builders having similar problems?

Does the Compatibility tab in the toolset properties show it as running in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 2? I'm wondering if a patch got auto-applied and changed things.

Try creating a new shortcut or even just starting the toolset from the NWN2 main directory.

Install any toolset plugins lately?

Try putting a pop-tart in the cd-rom drive. It won't make the toolset work, but it will come in handy if you get hungry later.
for the record, I think it probably is an auto-update for windows. I'd check the settings with compatibility mode as suggested above.

The problem with the pop-tart approach is that it might 'jam' the drive.

If that happens there will be an error line written to the KEL log.

Well,
I've tried running in XP service pack 2 & 3 compatibility modes, running as administrator, switching off antivirus & doing all of them again.
Still the same result - on clicking the toolset icon, the small loading window appears for less than a second before a win7 error message stating that Neverwinter Nights 2 Toolset has stopped working & the only button available is to close program.
Am I missing something obvious here?

Oh - and no plug ins installed recently. Just in case, I've just deleted my atari/nwn2/toolset/plugins folder & tried again - same result.

Which version are you running from - original disks or the steam (or similar)?
You may need to reinstall - so if you do remember to backup your mydocuments NWN2 folder
I reinstalled the first time I had a virus and the new game wiped out my entire player directory and all of my work with it - it was many years ago but you never forget that first total loss....

Is going back to XP or Vista a valid option? If you do, remember to back up everything, As morbane suggested. I have an external hard drive and also use my amazon cloud drive for extra protection.

there is also the option of win7/32bit - I set my pc up that way and i have had zero compatibility problems - with NWN2 or any other recent game for that matter.

Thanks for the ideas folks,
I'm running Win7 64bit - same as my laptop - the only major difference between them is the lappy is running the Steam version of NWN2 & the desktop is running the disk version + expansion disks - other than that, they're pretty much identical (graphics cards may be different manufacturers, but I don't remember any driver updates in the last week that might have KO'd anything).
re 32 bit - don't I have to reinstall windows (& all software) to change to that?
Also - is it odd that only the toolset is affected? The NWN2 game itself runs fine.
I'll take another look around later on, otherwise I think you're right - its looking like reinstall time. At least this time I can use the steam version & not have to go through all those updates again!

Thanks PJ - got a little weirdness all of a sudden where everything in interior areas is blinding white for all but a small number of camera angles, which is causing a few problems in testing areas - but I'll get there - almost all the islands of the Sahuagin Heel are finished, and the base area - a Ship called the Swallow. All that's left is the interior dungeons & the scripting - I always save the worst til last :-)
This was supposed to be another short mod to take up an evening or two, but its expanding a little!
