I really enjoyed it too. There are things I love and dislike about DAO, and there are things I love and dislike about DA2. Second playthroughs are definitely worth it, if just to play your relationships with your companions differently.

If you are a video game fan who didn't like playing Dragon Age: Origins, then it seems you are almost fated to like DA2.

"And you will like Dragon Age 2!" said the evil witch, flipping her wand at the Video Game Fan with an evil glint in her dark, dark eyes.

The queen fainted, and the king - the powerful and noble king - gasped in despair. All over the kingdom, black clouds invaded the skies, chasing the birds away, as though the lands themselves were donning the colors of grief.

"How is that even possible?" whispered a knight. "Surely, there's a mean to convince the Video Game Fan that he cannot like Dragon Age 2. It is so unnatural!"

"I heard he already played it six times," replied another.

"Six times? That's a lie! Nobody can play Dragon Age 2 six times."

But there was nothing that could be done. All the magic, all the swords, all the gold, the jewels and the diamonds, were useless against the terrible fate that had just befell the Video Game Fan. That was the price to pay for defying the gods by not liking Dragon Age: Origins, and it would be paid in full.

Meanwhile, the Video Game Fan was laughing and enjoying his game without a care in the world...

...a puppet of the gods, a mere pawn of fate!

Ah, good old hyperbole. My favorite debate vice. Second only to wide generalizations, which I also am guilty of.

The nature of DA2 is not that it is so obscenely horrible or contains some innate quality that makes it abohorant as a video game, but of what it represents, especially in light of what Dragon Age: Origins represented.

Origins was marketed as a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. To many purists, both on this forum and in the world in general, this was not truly the case, but regardless, the idea was there. The concept was demonstrated to be a return to classic RPG video game roots, to the roots of PnP RPGs even.

DA2 is an attempt to make the Dragon Age games, to borrow a phrase from Casey Hudson, more "videogamey." It took a pace of combat where someone swung a sword in a suit of plate armor a couple seconds to complete and replaced it with animations that swung a seven foot sword like a wooden twig. Where a rogue was a character that used their finese and skill to do damage, not the equivalent to a ninja from Naruto. Where a demon or an abomination was no longer a difficult encounter, but now a DOZEN demons were the way to make combat more challenging.

It took deep conversations and dialogue options from classic RPGs and replaced it with three ways to say the same thing, three ways to come to the same conclusion. It took options that affected the story and how things played out in the endgame and replaced it with railroads to Templar Town, population Lightsaber Meredith and Out of Nowhere Orsino.

It took having companions that you had to listen to and understand in order to unlock their stories, backgrounds and quests and threw in companions that would adore you while you treated them like garbage and would flaunt their life stories and ideals around every chance they could.

As I stated a moment ago, DA2 is not horrible. But given the direction Origins appeared to be taking, the sign that we could be returning to a type of RPG most of us hadn'y seen in over a decade, but coupled with increases in technology and advances in gameplay... then to have DA2 not continue in this path, but rather to devolve into a messy hybrid of more shallow RPGs and hack n' slash action games is a shame. Origins fans, and fans of the concept that a deep RPG could be crafted built in established mechanics that give the player real, deep, wildly varying options coupled with an amazing story and an engrossing world and lore, have no choice but to see DA2 as a failure. And when the critical acclaim echoes this, when sales drop to mirror this, when fans abandon EA/Bioware because of this, we don't rejioce because we want the franchise to burn.

We relish in the bad news as a means to show that what was created before can be replicated and improved. It does not need to be streamlined and "dumbed down" in order to be successful. Not only that, it appears that the wider appeal market sells less than the more niche one, ironically enough.

I don't find it unbelievable that people can like DA2. I find it unbelieavable that EA/Bioware could abandon Origins so divergently, and then continue to state that the direction they were going is the one they have been looking for the entire time.

I'm glad the OP and others can enjoy DA2, but it was... a poor follow up to the formula that won them Game of the Year less than 18 months before it was released. Which is what was and continues to be frustrating to many of us who were fans of Origins and many of the RPG games Bioware made previously.

I look at it this way:

Dragon Age: Origins - 4 full playthroughs before getting bored, attempted three additional playthroughs but became bored after finishing the origin story.

Dragon Age 2 - 6 full playthroughs, still having fun with it.

DA:O is superior in ways, but I felt DA2 has a bigger Fun Factor.

LMAO 6 full playthroughs my ass. If you said that for origins I would believe you.

If only there were a way to find out what someone has been playing. Like a button you could push to see their character.

Oh wait, there is! Let's see what Laverick has for DA II.

Last updated 2012-04-22 12:39:34 GMT

Arwênn - Level: 23 Rogue
Ethan - Level: 22 Warrior
Maya - Level: 22 Mage
Ebon - Level: 25 Mage
Liara - Level: 13 Warrior
Dawn - Level: 6 Mage

Stalker. :o

"6" was a typo, it should have said 5 full, with "still having fun" meaning I was on my sixth and still having fun. Dawn was played offline and hasn't updated on BSN, it was a full playthrough. I'm part way through my sixth with Liara, just took down Corypheus.

I honestly don't see why it got so much hate from fans and a mixed review from the critics. they improved in almost every aspect of the game and it's milestones ahead of origins.

Milestones ahead of origins?
They remove freedom to talk freely with the companions. They remove the ability to create and roleplayplay the character from first person's perception with third person's narrator and frame narrative. It's a big deal to me because I can no longer play the character as my avatar, disconnecting me from the story and character, making the companions shallow unrealistic one dimensional characters. You like restricted railroaded games. I like my freedom of choices.

The story had so many moments that I didn't expect. it had me from the very opening scene.

Yeah like, killing Carver less than 5 minutes after the game started. Everyone knows BioWare loves to kill family members but this one is the fastest.

Not to mentioned, how this 'apostate' Hawke cast magic right in front of city guards before he even permitted to enter the city. Guess what? Everyone thinks he is rogue/warrior. That's truly unexpected. /Sarcasm

The whole game brought a dark and gloomy feel to it and it showed in its enviroments, characters and tone of the story. The characters were very well done and all of them made me feel something regardless of wether I liked them or not from adversaries that appose Hawke' like Night Commander Meredith to companions and possable LI's like Merill.

It's dark and gloomy that every mages were potrayed as lunatic blood mages. Every single one of them. And the character? They're one dimensional chatter who talk only about their personal belief for 10 damn years. You enjoy hearing naive girl blabbering dark arts. I don't. I care for people who may be harmed by her arts. You enjoyed  mentally unstable character who speak freedom for mages. I don't. I care for law and order. I care people who he terrorizes and bombed to pieces.

The combat was absolutely amazing and I hope bioware uses the same engine for DA3.

As long as they don't block my screen with splaterring blood and disorient my camera view due to rogue's skill, I'm fine with the combat. Just make sure Varric is not too dumb to run straight into enemies respawn centre.

I just loved the whole package. I was a little weary about buying the game at first because I didn't really like Origins and I've heard so many complaints on DA2 but I was plesantly surprised when I got a chance to play it.
while DA2 isn't perfect, it's an amazing predecessor  to Origins.

anywho, thanks for caring to read. I just thought i'd show my appreciation for one of my new favorite dark fantasy games.

REALLY great job bioware. I might even pre order DA3. <3

I hate the whole package. It's isn't perfect and awful predecessor to Origins. I've learn my mistake and considering to quit DA franchise. But I've waiting for Morrigan's return ever since Witch Hunt. So I'll hang around for DA 3. No pre-oder from me unless DA3 turn out something I like greatly.

So good luck to you. Hope you'll like DA 3 too.
