I am constantly crashing while I move items in the inventory screen, this is a constant problem.
The error message reads
An Assertion failed in CHVidImage3d.cpp at line number 1957
I am running windows 7, and I am playing the game through the 4 in 1 dvd box set. Please help.

Let me also add that I am unable to speak to many of the NPCs throughout Athkatla because "they appear to be busy".
In other words they are bugged.

The 4-in-1 set needs a patch applied after installing. Person appears busy is a known effect of not patching.
Ideally you should do a full install of the game, full install of the expansion and then apply the expansion patch (other patch not needed once expansion is installed). Also, install to somewhere like c:\\games. Installing in the default program files folder doesn't work well as Windows 7 regards this area as protected and starts copying ini files, save games etc.
If you have to uninstall first but want to ty continuing your game you'd need to copy the relevant file from the SAVE folder (or compatibility area for that folder if installed to progam files). I'm not sure how backwards-friendly the patch is so that save game may prove problematic.
Take the Throne of Bhaal official patch from here. Don't use the beta patch.

There used to be a thread here about assertion errors but I can't find it. I had a quick search and found this, sounds the same as your issue (although that person had a load of mods installed too).
