The broodmother kind of reminds me of the axolotl tanks from the "Dune" books by Frank Herbert (more specifically the later ones by his son Brian Herbert). Its a similar idea except using advanced technology rather than force feeding dwarves to other dwarves.
Consider also that the cave the Broodmother is in has all that red fleshy muck everywhere, that could almost be the raw material that the darkspawn are aseembled from.

Now I'm reminded of the dragons, how until they get to breeding age (high dragons and drakes) there doesn't seem to be that much physical appearance of gender. Kinda like bees and ants. What if there are darkspawn drones hiding somewhere? What if the alphas or emissaries are the drones? What if all the darkspawn we see are actually infertile females, like ants and bees? We never see their naughty bits.

To bad we see to much of the Broodmother's naughty bits instead :-)
But yeah, I'm assuming that before the full mutation takes place, but while she is clearly at the beginning stages of becoming a broodmother the 'violation' bit takes place, after which she then completes the transformation involving 'eating her kin', in which she gains the size and full egg-sack transformation. Certainly does make this bit the most horrific part of the game
