Catalyst ~ How do you define 'synthetic life'?

This is something that has puzzled me for a while... At the end of the game, the Catalyst tells you about the 'destroy' option:

"You can destroy all synthetic life if you want, including the geth. Even you are partially synthetic..."


Riiiight, so by destroying the tube the Reapers will be killed but the resulting wave will also kill the geth. Makes sense, I guess... But what about the next bit?

The Catalyst calls into question whether this wave will kill Shepard because he is partially synthetic after being revived by Project Lazarus, but it goes beyond that. There are races that use cybernetic implants, if I recall correctly in ME1 the Codex says that the quarians use cybernetic implants along with their suits. Does this mean that the quarians will die too if I pick destruction? It can't be though because we see Shepard take a breath back in London... without calling in the indoctrination theory, why does none of this make sense and why isn't it made clear? :mellow:
