A whole universe (literally and figuratively) has been created in Mass Effect games and it is beginning to reach the excellence in ME2, but even more in ME3 (and at many different levels including graphics). It would be a shame to end there wile the decor just start to be painted and that Mass Effect is far from having explored its possibilities. There is so much to tell, so much to explore, and Commander Sheppard (the female one, for me) must not die.
Maybe ME4 could be a prequel, and we could then again be the Commander Sheppard in a prior period or in a period between ME1 and ME2 or between ME2 and ME3, but it is still possible to develop many stories with Sheppard who are not in a prequel. Sheppard has a strong personality that I like, and a voice, facial expressions, an attitude that go with it. Another character would necessarily be different, and the main interest of the game (which is the continuity in the next game) would be lost. The end of the 3 is fine, but personally I would not wish the death of Sheppard (which is also not clearly known but is widely suggested.
By the way, can someone tell me how to make screenshots of the game? I wish I had images of my character, Abi Sheppard. When I do a capture of the game, the image is black. Thanks by advance.
