I just felt like bringing this up, for no reason really. But it's been nagging me.
Asari don't have eyebrows. Aethyna, Counciller Tevos, Samara, you name it. Every single one i've seen is positively eyebrow-less. All of them, that is, except Liara. Why? They don't even look like real eyebrows either, it's like they've been drawn on with a pernament marker. Did she put them on to try and attract Shepard or something? I just don't understand.
And don't answer with "artistic integrity".
Why does Liara have eyebrows?

Painted on. Benezia had them too.

They're fake, stick-on eyebrows she puts on every day in order to look more human.

she was so in shepard that she decided to draw them in, kind of like women who plug their eyebrows and then draw them back in..

Maybe its lke the face paint designs that some asari have, just Liara has it in place of eyebrows.

I think someone mentioned awhile ago that her "eyebrows" were part of her facial markings. Probably just made as a fan service to make Liara look more human, I don't know.

To appear sexier to human players, apparently male players don't like aliens looking well alien...

Some other Asari (Rana Thanoptis) seem to have patterns that resemble eyebrows, but yes, Liara's look like she got a Sharpie and drew them on.

Hmm. So, a family trait then? We can safetly assume Benezia and Liara painted eyebrows on their faces, just for the sake of it? Doesn't seem right to me.

Because it's ART...that's why.

I figure Benezia did it because it looked nice, and Liara copied her because she looked up to her.
Out of universe, to establish a similarity between mother and daughter since they really look nothing alike.

It's a T'soni trait, Benezia had the eyebrow markings and so does Liara, if Liara had daughters they'd have them too most likely

Well if she draws them on, she does a better job than 100% of human women who try to do it and end up looking surprised or angry.

This was discussed when in the ME days. It was a choice made to render her a bit more human-like. I always thought my Shep would eventually tell her to ditch the eyebrow tats in favor of something like Shiala or Tevos have.

Eyebrows help tremendously when animating emotion on faces. It's not impossible without eyebrows, but it makes the character much more sympathetic and allows for the animation of much more familiar 'looks'. Since she was designed to be a love interest, and the only one that couldn't die, I'm guessing it was an art design call to guarantee they'd have an easier time conveying the emotion and nuance in her face.
It's not as necessary on most other asari because the rest are all one off characters, so their emotional range is much smaller. It wasn't really necessary for Samara since her emotional range is also pretty limited, and she wasn't intended to be a real romance. I'm guessing they put the eyebrows on Benezia because it helped create a connection with Liara's looks, and it definitely helped them animate that 'eye-raise' thing that she did.
Now, I'm not saying that it's impossible without eyebrows, but it's definitely more straightforward and looks better to most humans, so the art team probably made a design call and the rest of the team agreed that it looked better.

Eyebrows are a really important part of how we read facial expressions. They're tatoos in game, but they actually exist becuase otherwise the romance and emotional scenes with Liara would be b0rked.

Right. I see now.
I genuinly wish I hadn't noticed them though, I was completely oblivious to them before. Now, whenever I speak with her they stand out horribly. Very distracting. =S

I don't know if you're overselling the emotive power of eyebrows, or I'm underestimating the power of Tali's voice actress.

You're underestimating the power of Tali's voice actress. Her voice makes (or breaks) her character, but so does her body language, which I'm guessing they used to substitute the lack of face emotions.KingNothing125 wrote...

If you watch a touching scene with Tali without dialogue, most if it is in the body language, and the emotions are a bit harder to read. With Liara, you can pick on a decent amount of emotional nuance in her face instead, even without the words.
If I remember correctly, Tali wasn't intended to be a love interest, and the player interest in her took them by surprise. She wasn't designed for a relationship, but her personality, writing, voice, and body language were enough. I'm sure they didn't think it was ideal, but I'm sure the animators given the job of handling her sequences learned a lot about conveying emotion exclusively through body language.

IIRC someone from Bioware said they were her markings. All I have to say is that it is pretty convenient that they look like eyebrows..

I actually noticed that early in ME1. Obviously it was done to make her more human, and to be able to express emotions better. I'm totally ok with the "excuse" that it's a T'Soni genetic trait.
Doesn't make Liara any less awesome.
However, with Benezia and Aethyta as parents, it's surprising she turned out so cute and innocent looking

Imo her eyebrows are pretty much the ugliest asari facial markings one can have =|
